Astronomers detect ancient cosmic explosions by catching light that has traveled for billions of years, then quickly observing the fading source in multiple wavelengths. Gamma-ray alerts can reveal where to look; optical and infrared observations track the afterglow, while spectra reveal redshift—the stretching of light as the Universe expands. Those measurements help astronomers establish what kind of event they saw and when in cosmic history it occurred.
What “ancient explosion” means
When astronomers report an explosion from the early Universe, they are not watching an old blast unfold now. They are receiving light emitted by an event long ago. Because light takes time to travel, looking farther away means observing an earlier period in cosmic history. The explosion is ancient in the sense that its light began its journey billions of years ago—not because astronomers found an unchanged fossil blast sitting in space.
That distinction matters because an image alone is not a timestamp. Astronomers need to identify a transient—a source that appears or changes in brightness—and then gather evidence about its spectrum, distance and likely origin. The interpretation comes from combining observations, not simply spotting a bright point.

Different explosions can produce overlapping signals, and the same event may be observed in more than one band of light. A gamma-ray burst, a fading optical or infrared counterpart, and a faint host galaxy can all contribute different pieces of evidence. No single signal establishes every detail.

How the detection process works
The workflow is a race: a brief signal may fade before a telescope can study it, so observatories coordinate to find the source and observe it promptly. Each stage answers a different question, from “where should we look?” to “how far away is it?”
1. Catch a brief or changing signal
A space observatory may detect a short flash of gamma rays. Alternatively, a sky survey may identify a new or changing source. A gamma-ray alert is useful because it can flag a transient event, but it is a starting point rather than a full explanation of what exploded.
Some long gamma-ray bursts can be associated with the deaths of massive stars. Short bursts can accompany neutron-star mergers. Those are different possible origins; astronomers do not assume every gamma-ray burst comes from the same kind of object. NASA’s Hubble Gamma-Ray Bursts overview describes how observations of burst counterparts help investigate these events.
2. Pin down the position and alert other telescopes
The initial flash may be brief, so observatories need to determine the source’s position quickly enough for follow-up. Once an alert identifies where to point, other telescopes can search for light from the same location. Space- and ground-based facilities can contribute in sequence, with instruments suited to different wavelengths.
GRB 090423 illustrates the handoff. Swift detected the burst on 23 April 2009; multiple ground-based telescopes followed it, and the European Southern Observatory (ESO) reports that infrared observations with the Very Large Telescope (VLT) took place 17 hours after detection. The timing is a feature of this example, not a universal response time for every transient. ESO’s gamma-ray burst account describes the observation.

3. Track the fading afterglow at several wavelengths
After the first alert, astronomers measure how the source’s brightness and color change. X-ray, optical and infrared observations can trace the fading afterglow. A light curve—the record of brightness over time—helps show how the counterpart evolves; comparing measurements across wavelengths adds information that a single image cannot provide.
Hubble observations of gamma-ray burst counterparts show how optical and infrared light curves can help constrain an event’s origin. The evidence is comparative: astronomers look at the source’s behavior and color over time, rather than treating “bright afterglow” as a unique label for one explosion class. NASA summarizes this approach in Homing in on Cosmic Explosions.
4. Obtain a spectrum and measure redshift
A spectrum separates light by wavelength. For very distant sources, recognizable spectral features appear shifted toward longer wavelengths compared with their original positions. Astronomers use that cosmological redshift as evidence that the Universe expanded while the light traveled. The measured redshift helps place an event in cosmic history.
Redshift, light-travel time and present-day distance are related ideas, but they are not interchangeable numbers. A redshift measurement is an observation of how light has been stretched; translating it into a cosmic epoch or distance requires interpretation. For example, ESO reports a redshift of 8.2 for GRB 090423 and estimates that the event occurred when the Universe was about 600 million years old. Those figures describe that particular burst, not a general conversion for every explosion. NASA’s explainer on using supernovae to measure dark energy also discusses how astronomers use supernova observations and their distances.
5. Identify the host galaxy when possible
Finding the galaxy associated with an explosion adds context and can help confirm the source’s environment. A host may be extremely faint, especially when it lies at great distance, so detecting the transient and detecting its galaxy are separate observational challenges.

In a 2025 report, ESA/Webb said the James Webb Space Telescope confirmed a supernova from an exploding massive star when the Universe was about 730 million years old and detected its host galaxy. That is a result for this reported event, not a claim that Webb has found every early supernova or that this remains the latest record indefinitely. ESA/Webb’s report describes the finding.
What each kind of observation contributes
There is no single telescope or wavelength that answers every question. The observing method depends on what signal is available, how quickly the source changes, and whether astronomers need to measure its spectrum or see a faint counterpart.
| Observation | What it can contribute | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Gamma-ray detection | Can catch a brief burst and trigger follow-up observations; different burst durations can point to different possible origins. | A burst alert alone does not establish the complete nature or history of the event. |
| X-ray follow-up | Records part of the fading afterglow alongside observations at other wavelengths. | Brightness change in one band is not, by itself, a complete identification. |
| Optical follow-up | Helps track counterpart brightness and color over time and can contribute to identifying an event’s origin. | For the most distant sources, expansion can shift original ultraviolet and visible light toward infrared wavelengths. |
| Infrared follow-up | Can reveal highly redshifted light and faint distant sources; it was used to follow GRB 090423 and is important for early-Universe events. | It still needs interpretation with other evidence, including spectral information where available. |
| Gravitationally lensed light | A foreground galaxy or cluster can magnify background light, potentially making a faint explosion easier to detect. | The effect depends on a suitable foreground lens and alignment; it is not available for every source. |
The table describes complementary roles, not a ranking of named observatories. A high-energy monitor may catch the initial flash; other facilities can follow in optical or infrared light, and spectroscopy can help establish redshift. The most useful observing plan is the one that captures the available signal before it fades and obtains the evidence needed for the specific event.
Why infrared matters for the farthest explosions
As the Universe expands, light traveling across it is stretched toward longer wavelengths. A source that emitted ultraviolet or visible light can therefore be observed at infrared wavelengths if it is sufficiently distant. This is why infrared sensitivity is especially valuable for investigating early cosmic events and their faint host galaxies.
Infrared observations do not make every distant explosion easy to find. The source can still be faint, and a telescope must observe the right location at the right time. Infrared data are one essential part of the evidence chain: they help recover light shifted out of the original wavelength range, while spectra and observations in other bands help interpret it.

Different explosion types can also have different wavelength signatures. Kilonovae, which are linked to neutron-star mergers, are relatively bright in near-infrared light. That infrared-bright appearance can help distinguish merger debris from a more ordinary optical afterglow. A kilonova is not simply another name for a long gamma-ray burst or a massive-star supernova; the proposed origins and signatures differ. NASA’s gamma-ray burst material discusses burst counterparts and related observations.
How gravitational lensing can help
Gravity from a massive foreground galaxy or cluster can bend light from a more distant object. Under a suitable alignment, that foreground mass acts as a natural lens: it can magnify otherwise faint background light and, in some cases, create multiple images of one explosion.
Lensing can make a distant event detectable when it would otherwise be too faint, but it is an opportunity rather than a standard step in every search. Astronomers need a foreground mass in the right position between the source and Earth. Multiple images, when present, are different views of one explosion produced by the lensing geometry—not multiple separate explosions.
Supernova Refsdal is a NASA Hubble example of a stellar explosion observed through gravitational lensing. It demonstrates how foreground mass can aid observations, but it does not mean every ancient supernova is magnified. NASA explains the effect in Hubble’s Gravitational Lenses.

GRB 090423: a burst seen at redshift 8.2
Swift detected GRB 090423 on 23 April 2009. ESO reports that VLT infrared follow-up occurred 17 hours later and measured a redshift of 8.2. ESO places the burst when the Universe was about 600 million years old. Together, the detection and follow-up show how a short-lived alert can lead to measurements that place an event in the early Universe.

The example should be read with its attribution attached: redshift 8.2 and the roughly 600-million-year cosmic age are ESO’s reported values for GRB 090423. They are not measures of the frequency of ancient bursts, nor should this 2009 event be described as the current distance record on the basis of those figures.
Webb: a supernova and its faint host
ESA/Webb reported in 2025 that Webb confirmed a supernova from an exploding massive star at an epoch when the Universe was about 730 million years old, and detected the associated host galaxy. In the report, lead author Andrew Levan described Webb’s role in directly showing that the light came from a supernova. The result illustrates why sensitive infrared observations matter: astronomers need evidence from the transient itself and may also seek the faint galaxy associated with it.
The roughly 730-million-year figure belongs to this reported supernova, not to GRB 090423. These are separate events and measurements. Any claim that one is the earliest confirmed supernova ever observed is time-sensitive; the 2025 report establishes what ESA/Webb reported then, not an enduring record for all later discoveries.
What these observations can—and cannot—tell you
A well-observed transient can support several linked conclusions: that a source changed or flashed, that its light has a measured spectrum and redshift, and that its observed behavior is consistent with a particular class of cosmic explosion. A host galaxy can add environmental context, and lensing can make an otherwise faint source visible.
Those conclusions depend on the combined evidence. A gamma-ray alert alone is not a redshift measurement. A changing point of light alone does not establish a host galaxy. Infrared brightness can help distinguish some signatures, but no one wavelength independently answers every question about origin and cosmic epoch.
The cited event reports provide specific measurements, not a population-wide count or comparative detection rate. They do not establish how often ancient explosions occur across the Universe or how likely any particular telescope is to detect one. Each reported case should be kept attached to its event, observatory and publication date.
Can a consumer telescope find an ancient cosmic explosion?
Not in the way described here. Detecting and identifying these events depends on transient alerts, rapid coordination among sensitive professional observatories, follow-up in multiple wavelength bands, and—in many cases—spectroscopy to measure redshift. A consumer telescope can support ordinary sky observing, but it is not a practical substitute for that coordinated detection and measurement process.
The central challenge is not simply making a distant point look larger. Astronomers must catch an event while its light is changing, collect the right kinds of measurements, and distinguish what those observations establish from what remains an interpretation. That combination is how a flash or fading point becomes evidence of an explosion in the early Universe.
