A printer test page can be generated as a PDF, an in-browser print layout, and a preview image from one shared description of the sheet. In the Astro project described here, that description uses millimetres; separate renderers turn it into each output. The PDF uses DeviceCMYK color operators, but that alone does not guarantee accurate color from a particular printer. Paper, ink, printer behavior, and color profiles still matter.
Why use one layout for three outputs?
A printer test page may need to work as a downloadable file, a page printed directly from a browser, and an image that helps someone inspect the sheet before printing. Maintaining three independent designs risks small but important differences: an element can shift, a measurement can change, or colors can be defined differently.
The approach described by the Astro site’s author is to define sheet geometry once, in millimetres, and pass that layout to three render paths:

- PDF: a generated document intended for download and printing.
- SVG: a browser-rendered layout for printing from the page.
- Preview: a raster image made from the generated PDF, rather than a separately drawn approximation.
The project uses Astro for the static site, Tailwind for styling, pdf-lib for PDF generation, qrcode for QR codes, Playwright for QA screenshots, and Node’s built-in test runner. These are the author’s stated implementation choices, not a comparison of tools.

For best results, store in a cool, dark place and avoid contact with oils, plastics, chemicals, and fats to preserve print quality and paper performance.
What makes the PDF “real CMYK”?
The author says the PDF renderer writes DeviceCMYK operators for fills and strokes. That means the PDF encodes color values in a CMYK device color space rather than merely labeling an RGB image as CMYK. The author also says every element on the CMYK sheet receives an explicit color, to avoid unintended RGB operators, and that the project bundles the Inter font because standard-14 Helvetica is not embedded.
Those implementation details describe the file-generation method; they do not establish what any printer will put on paper. DeviceCMYK values are device-dependent. The W3C CSS Color Module Level 5 Working Draft, dated June 18, 2026, explains that calibrated CMYK depends on an ICC profile corresponding to the ink combination, paper, total ink coverage, and equipment. Without suitable color-management information, a processor’s approximation of device-dependent CMYK can produce uncertain results.

Professional press workflows address a different problem. Adobe’s Acrobat documentation describes PDF/X-1a as converting colors to a destination CMYK space for a press-ready file that does not require further color conversions. Oracle’s PDF/X guidance notes that the output profile may be supplied by the print vendor. Neither point means every office printer or print shop expects a generic PDF/X file or one universal CMYK profile.
A CMYK-encoded test sheet is useful for examining how a particular print path handles its content. It is not, by itself, a calibrated color target or proof of color accuracy. A screen preview and the physical print answer different questions: Adobe distinguishes soft proofing, an on-screen simulation using profiles, from hard proofing, printed output. Soft-proof reliability depends on monitor quality, monitor and output-device profiles, and ambient lighting; a soft proof also does not show overprinting behavior.

How to print the scale test at actual size
The scale sheet includes a 100 mm bar to check whether the printed page has been resized. Its instruction is: “Print at 100% (Actual size). Turn ‘Fit to page’ off.” In a print dialog, choose the actual-size or 100% option and disable any fit, shrink, or enlarge setting that changes the page dimensions.
- Open the intended Letter or A4 PDF in your PDF viewer.
- Open the viewer’s print dialog and select the matching paper size.
- Set scaling to 100% or Actual size; turn off Fit to page.
- Print the sheet, then measure the marked bar with a ruler.
If the bar does not measure 100 mm, the result indicates a scale discrepancy somewhere in the print path; it does not, on its own, identify whether the cause was the viewer setting, paper-size selection, driver, or printer. The project’s article gives examples of the size mismatch caused by fitting one standard page to another: A4 on Letter is about 94.07%, and Letter on A4 about 97.27%. Those are page-size arithmetic examples, not measurements of printer behavior.

How the Astro project checks its outputs
PDF and page-size coverage
The author reports a build step that verifies 20 PDFs: Letter and A4 versions for each of the site’s sheets. This is a generated-file check. It does not show that those files print correctly on a broad range of hardware.
Browser print and previews
The SVG print path uses a static @page size and print-color-adjust: exact, according to the author. The preview images are rasterized from the generated PDFs with Poppler, so they derive from the PDF output rather than a third, independently authored layout. A preview can help reveal layout problems, but it cannot substitute for inspecting a physical print.

QR-linked results
The author says each sheet includes a QR code linking to a results page with permalink hashes, and that the page applies only recognized hashes. This describes the site’s stated behavior; it is not an independent security assessment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the test pages can—and cannot—tell you
The site offers sheets for color, black and white, CMYK, alignment, nozzle checks, scale, photo output, and duplex printing. These categories can help structure a print check, but the evidence available for this project has important limits.
- The author says the site has not been tested across a range of real printers. The build’s PDF verification is not evidence of broad hardware compatibility or print accuracy.
- The camera-based nozzle check is described as beta and tuned on synthetic photos; the author says real phone photos of printouts have not been collected. Treat its diagnosis as experimental rather than established for real-world printouts.
- Defect photos are AI-generated placeholders labeled “Illustration,” not examples of measured printer failures.
- The author reports Lighthouse scores of 94–99 for performance and 100 for accessibility and SEO on the pages measured, while noting that real-host numbers still need re-measuring. These are self-reported page scores, not independent benchmarks.
When this architecture is useful
A shared geometry model is useful when several formats must represent the same measured sheet. It can reduce divergence between a PDF and browser print layout, while deriving preview images from the PDF keeps the preview tied to the generated document. The approach still requires validating the outputs that matter: generated files for document correctness, browser output for print-layout behavior, and physical prints for actual printer and paper results.
