The Dow Jones Industrial Average and Nasdaq Composite measure different slices of the U.S. stock market in different ways. The Dow tracks 30 selected large U.S. companies and weights them by share price; the Nasdaq Composite covers stocks listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market and weights them by market capitalization. That means the Dow gives more influence to higher-priced shares, while the Composite generally gives more influence to larger companies. Neither index is a complete picture of the market, and neither is an investment you can buy directly.

The most important distinction is not simply that one has 30 members and the other has many more. It is that the indexes use different constituent universes and different weighting rules. A change in a company’s stock price can therefore affect each index in a different way, even when the company appears in both.
How the weighting methods change an index’s movement
The Dow gives more weight to a higher share price
The Dow is price-weighted. In simplified terms, its index level is calculated by adding the share prices of its 30 components and dividing that sum by the Dow divisor. A component with a higher share price has more influence on the result than a lower-priced component, even if the lower-priced company is larger by total market value.
For example, imagine two Dow components whose shares cost $100 and $50. If both stocks rise by 1%, the first gains $1 per share and the second gains 50 cents. Before considering the divisor, the first stock’s price change contributes twice as much to the sum. This is why an investor should not assume that a company’s economic size determines its influence on the Dow.

S&P Dow Jones Indices illustrates the point with Merck and Visa: in its example, Visa’s share price is twice Merck’s, so Visa receives twice the weight and has twice the impact from the same percentage share-price move. This is an illustration of the price-weighting principle, not a permanent statement about their current share prices or index weights.
The Nasdaq Composite gives larger companies more influence
The Nasdaq Composite is market-capitalization-weighted. Market capitalization is a company’s share price multiplied by its shares outstanding. Under this approach, a company with a larger market value generally contributes more to the index than a smaller company. If two constituents rise by the same percentage, the larger company’s move will generally have more effect on the index.
Consider two hypothetical companies: one worth $1 trillion and another worth $10 billion. If each stock rises by 1%, the larger company represents a much bigger portion of total market value and ordinarily makes a much larger contribution to a capitalization-weighted index. The example explains the weighting logic only; it does not describe current Composite constituents or weights.
These rules can lead the indexes to react differently to the same market session. A sharp move in a high-priced Dow component can matter disproportionately to the Dow, while a sharp move in one of the Composite’s largest companies can matter more there. For the Composite, “large” means large by market value, not necessarily a high price for one share.

What companies each index includes
The Dow is a selected group, not a census of the market
The Dow contains 30 selected large U.S. companies. Its selection is committee-based, with factors including a company’s reputation, sustained growth, investor interest, and whether the index represents a range of sectors. There is no strict formula that automatically ranks companies and admits the top 30.
That approach makes the Dow a compact indicator built from selected, well-known businesses rather than a broad tally of every U.S. stock. Its name is historical: despite “Industrial Average,” the modern index is not limited to industrial companies. S&P Dow Jones Indices covers transportation and utilities separately through the Dow Jones Transportation Average and Dow Jones Utility Average.
The Composite follows the Nasdaq-listed universe more broadly
The Nasdaq Composite covers stocks listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market. Nasdaq describes it as including thousands of stocks and more than 3,500 companies across sizes and sectors. Those counts can change as listings and eligibility change, so they should be treated as a description of breadth, not a fixed membership number.

The Composite has a technology emphasis, but it is not a technology-only index. It also includes financial companies and businesses in other sectors. Its scope comes from the Nasdaq-listed stock universe, not from a committee selecting 30 large companies to represent the whole market.

Nasdaq is both the name of an exchange and part of the names of multiple indexes. The Nasdaq Composite and Nasdaq-100 are separate indexes. The Nasdaq-100 is a narrower index with a different selection universe, so a statement about its holdings, sector concentration, or performance should not be presented as a fact about the Composite.
How membership changes—and why the Dow divisor matters
The Dow committee reviews components as needed and may make changes in response to market developments or corporate actions. Its methodology does not specify an annual or semi-annual reconstitution, so there is no fixed calendar date on which it automatically replaces members according to a ranking.
Because the Dow is price-weighted, a stock split or a change in membership could alter the sum of component share prices without reflecting an actual market gain or loss. The Dow divisor addresses that problem. It is adjusted when necessary so a split or component replacement does not create a misleading jump in the index level. In simplified form, the index level is the sum of component prices divided by the divisor; the divisor is a calculation mechanism, not the number of Dow companies.
The Composite’s coverage is tied to Nasdaq listings and its own methodology rather than the Dow’s committee-selected group. Companies can enter or leave the listed universe, and the index’s membership and weights can change. For any question about a particular company’s current inclusion or the index’s current composition, use a dated provider factsheet rather than assuming a past list remains current.

What each index can—and cannot—tell you
Use the Dow as a compact gauge of selected large companies
The Dow can be useful when a news report wants a familiar shorthand for the day’s movement among a small group of established U.S. companies. Its long history also makes it a commonly cited market barometer. But it represents only 30 selected stocks, and the price-weighting rule means the companies with the highest share prices have the greatest index influence, not necessarily those with the largest businesses.
Use the Composite for broader Nasdaq-listed coverage
The Nasdaq Composite can help describe the direction of the Nasdaq-listed market across a much wider range of companies than the Dow. Its technology emphasis means it can be especially sensitive to large moves among technology-related businesses, but its coverage is not limited to that sector. It is not, however, a census of all publicly traded U.S. companies: its universe is defined by Nasdaq listing.
Neither index alone answers whether “the market” is up or down in every sense. They cover different universes, use different weights, and may diverge on the same day. If a report says one rose more than the other, that does not by itself show that the entire U.S. stock market performed similarly or that one index is inherently better.

How to compare Dow and Nasdaq Composite performance fairly
Index levels are not directly comparable as measures of performance. Each index has its own calculation history and divisor, so a larger numerical index level does not mean it has grown more or represents more value. Compare percentage returns over the same dates instead, and make sure you are comparing the same type of return.

- Set identical start and end dates. A comparison from one date range cannot be fairly compared with a different period. State the dates clearly, especially when discussing a short-term market move.
- Choose price return or total return. A price-return series reflects changes in component stock prices. A total-return series also accounts for dividends, generally assuming they are reinvested. Do not compare one index’s total return with the other’s price return.
- Use matched, dated data. Index levels, weights, constituents, and returns change. Cite or identify a provider data series and its date rather than treating a current figure as permanent.
- Interpret the result in light of construction. A difference in return may reflect the indexes’ distinct constituents and weighting methods; it does not isolate one cause or establish that one is a better investment.
For a single day, a reported percentage change is usually more informative than comparing the two displayed index levels. For longer periods, clarify dividend treatment and the exact measurement window; otherwise, the comparison may answer a different question from the one readers think it answers.
Are the Dow and Nasdaq Composite investments?
No. They are indexes: calculation-based measures of groups of stocks. You cannot purchase an index level itself. Financial products such as index-tracking funds may seek to follow an index, but those products are separate investments with their own structures and risks. The index comparison alone does not establish which product, if any, is suitable for a particular investor.
When a fund or other product claims to track an index, check which specific index it follows. A product tracking the Nasdaq-100 is not thereby tracking the Nasdaq Composite, and a fund associated with “the Dow” should be checked for the exact benchmark and investment terms. Index membership and performance do not guarantee a product’s future results.
Which one should you look at?
- For a familiar snapshot of 30 selected large U.S. companies: the Dow is the relevant index, with the caveat that its weighting follows share prices.
- For broader coverage of Nasdaq-listed stocks: the Nasdaq Composite is more relevant, while remembering that it is neither technology-only nor a market-wide index of every U.S. listing.
- For a claim about overall U.S. market performance: first identify the market segment the claim intends to represent; neither of these indexes covers every listed stock or weights companies in the same way.
- For investment returns: compare specific investable products and matched performance data, not just index names or index levels.
Where the indexes came from
The Dow began calculating in May 1896 as an average of 12 industrial stocks and later expanded to its current 30-component structure. The Nasdaq Composite was established in 1971. The different starting points and calculation systems are another reason their raw index levels should not be compared as though they shared a common scale.
