Archaeologists treat a LiDAR anomaly as a candidate, not a confirmed site. LiDAR records surface shape; field observation can establish whether a mapped feature exists on the ground, while its date, function and buried extent may require other evidence. Verification is therefore a sequence of questions and records, not a single test or a requirement to excavate every promising shape.

What LiDAR can—and cannot—show

Airborne LiDAR (light detection and ranging) uses laser pulses sent from an aircraft and records their returns from surfaces. Processing can separate many vegetation returns from ground returns and produce detailed terrain models. Archaeologists use those models and visualizations to recognize subtle relief that may be difficult to see from the ground or in ordinary aerial photographs. Historic England describes the method as useful for recognizing and recording otherwise hard-to-detect landscape features in its LiDAR overview, updated 22 May 2024.

The data show topography, not an automatic label for what made it. A raised line could be a bank, a natural ridge, a field boundary or a more recent earthwork. A hollow might be a ditch, a track, drainage or erosion. LiDAR alone does not establish when a feature was made, who made it, or what it was used for. Historic England’s airborne LiDAR survey guide explicitly includes distinguishing archaeological from non-archaeological features as part of interpretation.

Vegetation filtering can make ground relief easier to inspect, but it does not mean a laser sees uniformly through every forest. Historic England illustrates filtered visualizations that reveal an Iron Age enclosure beneath woodland vegetation in Savernake Forest. A separate example at Newton Kyme shows a slight earthwork associated with a Roman fort. These demonstrate what careful interpretation can bring into view; resemblance to either feature is not proof that another landform has the same age or purpose.

How archaeologists move from a mapped anomaly to a field record

1. Describe the landform before assigning it a history

Analysts first identify the physical pattern visible in the terrain model: perhaps a bank and ditch, platform, hollow way, enclosure or a group of connected earthworks. They inspect different visualizations and the surrounding landscape, then consider whether the shape could instead result from geology, agriculture, drainage, modern construction or another non-archaeological process. The first useful statement is descriptive—what relief appears to be present—not a claim that it has already been identified as an ancient site.

Interpretation also takes account of how the data were produced and displayed. A visualization helps reveal some forms of relief more clearly than others; it is not itself the feature. Historic England’s guide sets out an archaeological survey approach to airborne LiDAR, while its later mapping standard emphasizes bringing interpretation, mapping and monument recording together rather than treating a striking image as a finished result.

2. Decide what the field visit needs to establish

Before choosing a method, the team frames a question. Is the mapped relief actually visible on the ground? Are there surface materials associated with it? Does it continue beyond the proposed boundary? Is its form consistent with the suggested interpretation? Does the question concern a buried feature that cannot be resolved by looking at the surface? The answer determines how much measurement or testing is appropriate.

Target selection is deliberate. Researchers working at Nan Madol selected six areas for field verification and validation of LiDAR measurements. They favored especially clear, representative features and areas with lighter vegetation. Canopy conditions mattered because GNSS equipment needs a relatively open view of the sky for its most precise measurements. The team also consulted Pohnpei State Historic Preservation Office personnel and Temwen Island landowners about archaeological feature locations. This 2019 case illustrates how the research aim, visibility, measurement conditions and local knowledge can shape where a team works; it is not a universal field protocol. See the study, “Airborne LiDAR Reveals a Vast Archaeological Landscape at the Nan Madol World Heritage Site”.

3. Walk over the area and record what is visible

A systematic walkover—also called reconnaissance, above-ground survey or surface inspection—lets archaeologists examine relief, record its position and form, note its condition, and understand its relationship to nearby landscape features. The U.S. National Park Service describes surface inspection as systematic walking to record surface information. Its overview also identifies archival research and remote sensing as complementary ways to locate and understand archaeological sites: “How Do Archeologists Find Sites?”, last updated 9 May 2023.

Where the question depends on comparing the field observation with a mapped line or elevation, the team can collect coordinates or measurements using appropriate survey equipment. The instrument and conditions matter. The Nan Madol study’s discussion of GNSS and vegetation is a reminder that a dense canopy can limit measurement precision; a single handheld or phone location should not be presented as survey-grade confirmation. The required positional accuracy depends on the purpose of the work.

Field teams may check the candidate against historic maps, aerial photographs, existing site records, local knowledge and other remote-sensing evidence. Agreement between independent sources can strengthen an interpretation. If sources disagree—for example, if a mapped feature appears to stop at a boundary that is not visible in the field—the discrepancy is information to investigate and document, not something to smooth over.

4. Add tests only when observation cannot answer the question

A walkover may confirm that a bank or ditch is present while leaving its chronology, cultural attribution or subsurface extent unresolved. If the research question requires evidence below the surface, archaeologists may use sampling or other appropriate methods. The National Park Service explains that some ground disturbance may be needed to confirm suspicions, and describes sampling as systematic investigation of part of an area, designed around existing knowledge, mathematical probability, or both.

Possible approaches in a particular project can include coring, shovel tests, geophysical survey or excavation, but there is no fixed sequence in which every candidate must pass through each method. The choice depends on the question, landscape and surface conditions, access, permissions, conservation impact and applicable professional standards. Sampling design matters: a test should be positioned and sized to address a stated question, rather than chosen simply because a feature looks compelling in a model. The cited sources do not establish a universal sample size or accuracy threshold for confirming all LiDAR candidates.

Permission and protection are part of the method, not administrative afterthoughts. Land access, permits and heritage rules vary by location. Do not dig, collect artifacts or publish precise coordinates for vulnerable places without authorization and consideration of relevant heritage authority protocols. In the United States, the NPS explainer notes that archaeological study on NPS land is restricted to NPS employees or permitted individuals.

What counts as “verified”

The word should be tied to the claim that the evidence supports. A field visit can verify that a visible earthwork exists and that its position corresponds broadly to a mapped anomaly. That is different from establishing that the earthwork is archaeological, assigning it a date, identifying its function, or defining buried limits. Those stronger claims may need additional evidence or testing.

  • Detection: a feature-like pattern appears in a LiDAR-derived terrain visualization.
  • Field observation: a corresponding landform is observed and recorded on the ground.
  • Testing: measurements, sampling or other investigation address a specific uncertainty, such as buried extent or chronology.
  • Interpretation: the evidence is assessed to propose what the feature is, with alternatives and remaining uncertainty made clear.

Keep direct observations separate from interpretations in notes and reports. “Low bank visible in the field” describes an observation. “Roman defensive rampart” is an interpretation that needs supporting evidence. This distinction lets later researchers assess the basis for a conclusion and revise it if new information emerges.

How findings are documented so others can check them

A useful record connects the original mapped candidate to what happened in the field. It can include the location and geometry of the interpreted feature, the field observations, the survey method and conditions, photographs or measurements, alternative explanations considered, tests undertaken, and a conclusion that states its limits. Where visibility or GNSS conditions affected what could be recorded, that context belongs with the measurements.

For Aerial Investigation and Mapping projects in England, Historic England’s 2026 standards and guidance call for a systematic, integrated approach combining interpretation, mapping and monument recording in GIS, with outputs compatible with Historic Environment Records and national datasets. The standard was published 30 June 2026 and applies to Historic England’s AI&M project context in England; it should not be mistaken for a binding worldwide rule.

Consistent mapped records allow field observations and interpretations to be checked, compared and reused. The scale of aerial mapping work also shows why the distinction between a discovery and its verification matters: Historic England reports that its aerial survey projects added more than 14,000 previously unknown sites to the historic environment record during 2011–2014. That figure concerns projects using National Mapping Programme standards, not LiDAR alone.

What guidance says—and where its scope ends

There is no single global checklist that converts every LiDAR anomaly into a confirmed archaeological site. The European Archaeological Council’s Guidelines for the Use of Airborne Laser Scanning (Lidar) in Archaeology, version 1, published in 2025, offer a collaborative reference rather than a binding rule for every country. More than 100 individuals and organisations from 30 countries responded to the 2022 baseline survey, and 49 co-authors worked on the guidance. Those figures describe how the guidelines were produced; they are not measures of LiDAR accuracy or discovery rates.

Likewise, the National Park Service’s public explanation describes U.S. practice in general terms, while Historic England’s standards apply to a defined English project context. Local law, access arrangements and professional standards govern what work can actually be done at a particular place. The practical test remains the same: state what question the evidence answers, use a proportionate method, and distinguish observed landform from archaeological interpretation.

For readers seeking a fuller technical account of aerial survey, Historic England’s guide, Using Airborne Lidar in Archaeological Survey: The Light Fantastic, provides further methodological context.
