Archaeologists do not establish a biblical discovery from an old object, a dramatic inscription, or a resemblance between a ruin and a place named in scripture. They first document the archaeological record: where each find came from, what it was associated with, how deposits and structures relate stratigraphically, and how the occupation was dated. Only then do they test whether the resulting evidence fits a particular historical or biblical location.

That final identification is an interpretation, not an automatic consequence of an ancient date. A careful report separates observed remains from inferred dates, functions and names, and preserves terms such as “may,” “suggests” and “probably” when the evidence does not justify certainty.

What counts as evidence for a biblical discovery?

A credible claim rests on several evidence types that reinforce one another:

  • Documented context: the exact area, layer, feature or deposit where an object was found, together with its relationship to nearby walls, floors and other finds.
  • Stratigraphy: the sequence of deposits and construction phases, showing what is earlier, later or contemporary.
  • Associated dating evidence: pottery, coins, architecture, inscriptions and other materials assessed as an assemblage rather than in isolation.
  • Historical and textual comparison: biblical passages and extra-biblical writings that describe places, periods or events.
  • Toponymic evidence: comparison of ancient and modern place-names, including how names may have changed over time.
  • Alternative explanations: competing sites or interpretations that the excavators considered and tested.

The Israel Antiquities Authority’s monograph catalog describes final excavation publications as addressing site identification, geological setting, stratigraphy, inscriptions, pottery assemblages, excavation strategy and methodology. Those details are the evidentiary record behind a claim, unlike a headline or an isolated photograph. See the IAA Reports monograph series for the kinds of documentation a complete report contains.

How archaeologists establish a site’s context

Record the provenience of every find

Provenience means the find’s documented location: the excavation area, locus or feature, layer and relationship to other remains. A coin lying on a floor, a sherd sealed beneath that floor and an object found in disturbed soil do not carry the same chronological weight. Field plans, photographs, measured sections and written locus records allow another researcher to reconstruct those relationships.

Read walls, floors and deposits together

Archaeologists ask whether a wall was built on an earlier surface, whether a floor sealed a deposit, and whether later construction cut through an earlier layer. Such relationships create a relative sequence even before an absolute date is assigned. Excavation reports should identify which areas were opened, what features were exposed and how associated deposits were interpreted.

The report on Horbat ‘Orva illustrates this procedure. Excavators opened areas along an enclosure wall, documented wall construction and associated deposits, and used pottery and coins from different contexts to build a chronology. Survey observations were considered alongside excavated remains when the authors proposed an account of settlement and abandonment. The preliminary report is available from the Israel Antiquities Authority.

How stratigraphy turns scattered finds into a sequence

Stratigraphy is the study of superimposed deposits and construction phases. In an undisturbed sequence, lower layers generally predate higher ones, but archaeologists must account for pits, erosion, reuse, rebuilding and other disturbances. A report therefore explains how each stratum was defined and which finds belong to it.

Architecture can mark a phase, but a wall may have been reused for centuries. Pottery sealed beneath a floor can date that floor’s construction, while pottery in a later fill may date the fill rather than the wall. Coins can provide a latest possible date for a deposit, yet their presence does not prove when a building was first erected. The strength of a sequence comes from relationships among multiple observations.

At Tel Shunem (Sulam), the IAA publication identifies five strata and characterizes them through pottery and architectural remains, assigning them to periods from the Late Bronze Age through later occupations. Its discussion of a successive Iron I occupation uses ceramic evidence together with biblical and historical sources; each evidence type remains distinguishable. Read the full article by Karen Covello-Paran and Eran Arie in ‘Atiqot 84 (2025).

How archaeologists date an occupation

Use assemblages, not a single suggestive object

An assemblage is the group of artifacts and architectural remains from a defined context. Pottery styles can be compared with securely dated examples; coins can narrow a deposit’s possible range; inscriptions may identify a person, language or administrative system; and building techniques can be compared with dated structures. None should be detached from its context.

Suppose an inscription uses a script associated with a biblical period. If it came from a disturbed surface, it may have been moved from an earlier or later setting. Conversely, a group of locally consistent pottery forms sealed beneath a floor can provide a stronger date even without a famous inscription. The report must state which evidence dates the layer and what uncertainty remains.

Distinguish a date from a name

Dating answers “When was this layer or occupation in use?” Site identification asks “Is this the place described by a particular text?” An Iron Age layer demonstrates an Iron Age occupation; it does not, by itself, demonstrate that the site was a named city in a biblical narrative. The two conclusions require different arguments.

How a proposed biblical identification is tested

Compare the archaeological pattern with texts

Researchers examine whether a proposed site fits the geography, chronology and activity described in biblical passages and other ancient writings. ASOR summarizes the evidence used in biblical-site identification as biblical texts, extra-biblical literary information, toponymic considerations and archaeology. Its discussion is available in ASOR Bulletin 50/3 (2000).

A useful comparison is specific rather than impressionistic. Does the text place the site near a route, border, river or neighboring settlement? Does the occupation exist in the period required by the account? Do buildings, fortifications, agricultural installations or inscriptions correspond to the proposed role? A general match—“this is an ancient hill town in the right broad region”—is weaker than several independent, geographically precise matches.

Evaluate place-name continuity

Toponymy compares ancient names recorded in texts or inscriptions with later and modern forms. Sound similarity can be a clue, but names may shift language, location or meaning, and the same name can occur in more than one place. A name argument gains weight when it aligns with a documented archaeological sequence and the geography described in the sources.

Ask what alternatives were rejected

A strong report explains why the proposed site fits better than plausible alternatives. It may compare distances, topography, occupation dates, inscriptions, road networks or name histories. If alternatives are not discussed, the reader should treat the identification as provisional even when the site itself is securely dated.

Why qualified wording matters

Archaeological publications distinguish observation from interpretation through their language. “The excavation exposed a stone-lined cistern” reports an observed feature. “The cistern may have served a village” infers function. “The village should probably be identified with a place mentioned by Josephus” advances a qualified historical identification. Removing “may,” “suggests” or “probably” changes the strength of the claim.

Terms such as “biblical-period,” “Israelite” or “Judean” describe a date or cultural attribution; they do not prove that a biblical event occurred there. A report can establish the existence of an ancient occupation while leaving the connection to a named biblical location unresolved.

Three examples of the verification process

Tel Shunem (Sulam): several strata, separate evidence streams

The Tel Shunem report divides the site into five strata and uses pottery and architecture to characterize occupations from the Late Bronze Age through later periods. It describes a successive Iron I occupation indicated by ceramics and discussed alongside biblical and historical sources. The example shows how textual context can support an interpretation without replacing stratigraphic or ceramic evidence. The publication is “Excavations at Tel Shunem (Sulam), Areas G and G1”.

Ḥorbat Burgin: a probable identification from a cluster of remains

Survey and excavation at Ḥorbat Burgin documented tombs, a cistern, inscriptions and hiding complexes. The authors argue that the combination of finds and historical comparison suggests a large Second Temple-period village and that it “should probably be identified” with Kefar Bish mentioned by Josephus. The identification is explicitly probable, not certain; its force comes from the cluster of evidence rather than one object. Consult the IAA article by Boaz Zissu and Amir Ganor in ‘Atiqot 58 (2008).

Horbat ‘Orva: chronology from features, finds and survey

At Horbat ‘Orva, excavators linked enclosure-wall features, pottery, coins and survey observations to a proposed chronology and an account of settlement and abandonment. This preliminary report demonstrates how conclusions can draw on many observations while still leaving some dates or explanations tentative. Its status as a preliminary report matters: later final publication can refine the sequence or alter an interpretation.

A practical workflow for checking a headline claim

  1. Find the underlying publication. Look for an excavation or survey report that names the excavators, location, methods, areas examined, strata and associated finds. A press release or photograph alone is not enough.
  2. Classify the publication. Determine whether it is a survey, preliminary report or final excavation volume. Preliminary results can change as analysis continues.
  3. Trace every important object to its context. Note the area, locus, layer or feature and whether the deposit was sealed, reused or disturbed.
  4. Reconstruct the sequence. Check how walls, floors, fills and cuts establish earlier and later phases. Confirm that the finds used for dating actually belong to the phase being dated.
  5. Read the dating argument. Identify which pottery, coins, inscriptions and architectural parallels support the date, and record the uncertainty expressed by the authors.
  6. Separate period from identity. Ask whether the evidence proves only an occupation in a period or also supports a particular named place.
  7. Test the textual and geographic match. Compare the site’s location, topography, routes, neighbors and occupation history with biblical and extra-biblical descriptions.
  8. Assess the name evidence. Check whether the proposed ancient-to-modern name connection is documented and whether other locations share a similar name.
  9. Look for competing interpretations. A persuasive claim explains why alternatives fit less well, not merely why the favored site is possible.
  10. Preserve the report’s confidence level. Repeat “possible,” “likely,” “suggested” or “probably” when those are the authors’ terms, and do not turn them into certainty.

How to compare competing biblical-site claims

Comparison axis Questions to ask What a stronger claim provides
Context quality Are provenience, stratigraphy and associations documented? Plans, sections, locus records and clear relationships among features and finds.
Dating evidence How was the occupation dated, and what uncertainty remains? Converging pottery, coins, architecture or inscriptions tied to the relevant layer.
Textual match Does the site fit a specific description in time and geography? Several precise correspondences rather than a broad regional resemblance.
Place-name evidence Is the ancient name’s continuity documented? A plausible linguistic and geographic chain that agrees with the archaeology.
Alternative sites Were competing locations or readings examined? An explanation of why the proposed identification fits better than alternatives.

Common mistakes that produce exaggerated “discoveries”

  • Equating age with identity: an ancient or biblical-period layer is not automatically the place named in scripture.
  • Letting one artifact carry the claim: an inscription, coin or visually distinctive object can be moved, reused or misunderstood without its context.
  • Ignoring disturbance: later pits, erosion, looting and rebuilding can mix materials from different periods.
  • Confusing a survey with an excavation: surface finds can indicate a site, but they usually provide less controlled stratigraphic information than excavated deposits.
  • Dropping uncertainty words: changing “probably identified” to “identified” overstates the published conclusion.
  • Relying on a modern name alone: similar-sounding place-names are clues that require archaeological, geographic and historical corroboration.
  • Quoting a preliminary result as final: subsequent excavation and specialist study may revise an early chronology or interpretation.

What a careful reader should conclude

The most defensible biblical-site claims proceed in layers: documented context establishes what was found; stratigraphy and associated assemblages establish when it belonged; historical, textual and place-name comparisons test where it might fit; and explicit consideration of alternatives determines how persuasive the identification is. The result may be a secure date, a plausible historical association or a probable biblical identification—but those are different levels of conclusion.
