Archaeologists identify a shipwreck by combining its physical remains, cargo and associated objects with historical records and the site’s context. They date it by weighing evidence such as deposit layers, artifact production periods, radiocarbon results and tree rings. A sonar image or a laboratory date can be an important clue, but neither alone normally establishes which ship sank or when.
How do archaeologists find a shipwreck?
Finding a possible wreck and identifying it are different tasks. A seafloor survey may reveal an unusual shape, but that observation is a lead—not a conclusion. Archaeologists need to assess the target, document what is there, and interpret it against the vessel’s surroundings and historical context.
Start with the history and the seafloor
Before fieldwork, researchers can review historical documents, maps, reports of vessel losses, known navigational hazards, environmental conditions and significant historical events. This context helps them decide where a systematic survey may be useful and what kinds of evidence could matter. The National Park Service (NPS) recommends archaeological assessment and systematic survey of submerged lands before making identifications in its Abandoned Shipwreck Act guidelines.
Surveys may also find wrecks incidentally. NOAA describes how seafloor mapping carried out for other scientific purposes can reveal shipwrecks, using mapping sonar and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). Such instruments help locate and map targets; they do not, by themselves, settle the target’s identity. NOAA explains this distinction in its shipwreck explainer.

Verify and document the target
Once a target is located, researchers conduct a visual survey and make a systematic record of the site. Depending on depth and conditions, they may use underwater cameras, measuring equipment, remote vehicles and survey platforms. The practical goal is to record the wreck’s layout and the relationships among its remains and associated objects—not simply to photograph or collect a striking artifact. NOAA outlines examples of marine archaeology tools and describes the broader work of maritime archaeology.
Recording relationships matters because an object’s significance depends partly on where it lies and what it is associated with. A loose object is not automatically evidence of the wreck’s original cargo or of a particular sinking. The site record gives researchers a basis for evaluating whether different clues belong together and whether the context appears intact.
How do they know which ship it is?
Identification is an inference from converging evidence. Researchers compare what is physically present with what historical sources say about vessels, their uses, cargoes and losses. NOAA frames the questions broadly: identity, vessel type and use, cargo, circumstances of sinking, artifacts and historical significance. Its maritime heritage fact sheet and NPS guidelines both emphasize the value of combining evidence rather than relying on a single clue.

Read the vessel remains as a whole
Construction and configuration can help researchers assess what kind of vessel they are looking at. The shape and arrangement of surviving parts may be compared with the historical and archaeological evidence for candidate vessels. The condition and layout of the remains also form part of the site context: archaeologists record how components and objects relate to one another rather than treating each find as an independent answer.
Construction evidence may narrow the possibilities without naming a specific vessel. A type of vessel or a likely use is not necessarily a unique identity. Researchers need to ask whether the physical evidence fits the proposed identification and whether independent clues support it.
Compare cargo, artifacts and historical records
Cargo and associated artifacts can help explain what a vessel was carrying or doing. Historical documents, maps and reports of losses provide possible candidates and circumstances for comparison. A strong identification depends on whether these lines of evidence fit together: the vessel remains, objects and cargo should make sense in the site’s context and in the historical account being considered.

The evidence can also inform how and why a vessel may have been lost, but an interpretation of the loss event is not automatically the same as proof of identity. Researchers should state conclusions in proportion to the evidence. The NPS and NOAA material does not prescribe one universal threshold that makes an identification definitive in every case.
Why one clue is rarely enough
- A sonar target locates something worth investigating; visual assessment and archaeological documentation are needed to interpret it.
- An artifact may indicate a possible period, use or association, but its meaning depends on its context and relationship to the wreck.
- A historical loss report can suggest a candidate vessel, but the physical remains and other evidence still need to fit.
- A laboratory result dates the sampled material; archaeologists must establish how that material relates to the vessel and its sinking.
How do archaeologists date a shipwreck?
Dating usually means building a reasoned estimate or range from several lines of evidence. Archaeologists distinguish relative dating, which establishes sequence or order, from absolute dating, which estimates a calendar age or date range. “Absolute” does not mean perfectly exact. NPS explains these methods in its guides to dating sites and artifacts and how archaeologists know a site’s age.

Relative dating: sequence before calendar year
Stratigraphy uses the order of deposits to establish which material lies earlier or later in a sequence. It is most informative when the layers have remained undisturbed. If the context has been disturbed, the apparent position of an object may not reliably show when it entered the site. Stratigraphy can order events without assigning them a specific calendar year.

Artifacts can also set limits. If an object has a known production period, its presence can help constrain when the deposit containing it formed. Cross-dating compares patterns with evidence that is better dated. These methods help build a chronology, but the date of an artifact’s manufacture or the age of a deposit should not be casually equated with the moment a ship sank.
Absolute dating: what the sample actually dates
Radiocarbon dating applies to appropriate once-living material, including wood or bone. Dendrochronology compares annual tree-ring patterns; where the timber and available reference chronology allow a match, it can identify a tree’s felling year. These methods provide dates for material, not an automatic timestamp for a shipwreck event.
For example, a date on wood is meaningful for the sinking only if archaeologists can establish that the wood belongs to the wreck in a relevant way and that the context supports that connection. A sample can be older than the event it is being used to date, or it may not be securely associated with the wreck. Researchers therefore consider context and, where possible, compare independent clues. NPS emphasizes that a sample’s age has to be interpreted in relation to its archaeological setting.

Can archaeologists tell exactly when a ship sank?
Sometimes historical records may help identify a specific loss event, but a dating method alone does not guarantee an exact sinking year. Archaeologists generally report a date or range that reflects the evidence and its uncertainty. The available NPS dating guidance does not give a universal precision figure for shipwreck dates, because results depend on the material, method and context.
The distinction is between the date of a sample, the formation of a deposit and the sinking event. Those dates may be closely related, but researchers need evidence to connect them. An intact context and agreement among independent clues make a conclusion more persuasive; they do not turn every result into an exact timestamp. The most defensible answer may therefore be a bounded period rather than a single year.
Why don’t archaeologists bring the artifacts up?
Because the arrangement of a wreck and its objects is evidence too. Removing objects haphazardly can erase their relationships to one another and to the site, making it harder or impossible to reconstruct what they can tell us. NOAA’s National Marine Protected Areas Center puts the consequence plainly: “Once a site or its artifacts are damaged or haphazardly removed, there is no way to access its information and recreate the story it might have told.” The statement appears on NOAA’s Underwater Archaeology page.

Underwater archaeological sites are nonrenewable sources of information: once context is destroyed, it cannot simply be collected again. Responsible investigation therefore focuses on systematic documentation and interpretation, not casual artifact removal. Finding a wreck does not make it appropriate to disturb it; lawful, permitted research and archaeological expertise matter.
How to judge a shipwreck identification or date claim
When reading a claim that a wreck has been identified or dated, look for the reasoning that links observations to the conclusion. A persuasive account should explain what was recorded at the site, which clues point to the proposed vessel or time period, and how the sampled material or artifacts relate to the wreck itself.
- Separate discovery from identification: ask whether the report describes only a remote-sensing target or a documented archaeological site.
- Look for converging clues: vessel construction, configuration, cargo, artifacts, records and context should be considered together where relevant.
- Check what was dated: distinguish the age of a sample or artifact from the date of the deposit and the sinking event.
- Notice context and uncertainty: ask whether deposits were intact and whether the conclusion is stated as a range or a stronger claim supported by several clues.
These checks do not replace specialist assessment; they help distinguish a plausible lead from an explanation that shows how the evidence supports its conclusion.
