Archaeologists do not get a perfect view of a sealed tomb without opening it. Instead, they build evidence in stages: document the landscape, use survey tools suited to specific questions, assess conservation risks, and decide whether any physical access or sampling is justified. Ground-penetrating radar, LiDAR, imaging and environmental monitoring can reduce unnecessary disturbance, but each has limits—and even remote work must be planned around the site.

How do archaeologists explore a tomb without opening it?

They first look for evidence that can be gathered without entering or altering the structure. A survey may map the land surface, identify likely subsurface features, record visible walls or paintings, and measure environmental conditions. The team then compares what those methods indicate and decides whether another survey, conservation measure, carefully controlled access, or no further intervention is appropriate.

This is not a process for producing a complete picture of a hidden room through a wall. Remote methods detect and map particular kinds of evidence. Their results are interpreted, checked against other observations, and treated as provisional where the method or site conditions limit what can be known.

“Without damaging” is best understood as minimizing intervention and managing risk, not guaranteeing zero impact. Entry can change the air, introduce dust or people, or affect humidity. Drilling or making a new opening to insert a camera can also disturb material or the tomb’s environment. Whether any of those actions is acceptable depends on the research question and conservation plan; there is no single protocol established for every tomb.

How do archaeologists find hidden tombs?

Finding a tomb often begins with the broader landscape rather than a scanner aimed at a suspected chamber. Archaeologists document surface features and terrain, then select methods according to what they need to locate: a buried structure, a chamber’s likely extent, a possible entrance, or the condition of a monument.

A UNESCO report on Korean tumuli describes several methods used for different purposes. LiDAR helped identify tombs beneath forest cover and establish cemetery topography. Resistivity survey was used to study curb stones and their condition, while ground-penetrating radar (GPR) helped identify tomb extent, chamber direction and burial chambers. These results show how methods can complement one another; they do not establish that every buried chamber can be found or clearly resolved.

In the Valley of the Queens, an entrance to QV 97 had become occluded and was later rediscovered by a Franco-Egyptian team using GPR, as reported in a Getty Conservation Institute assessment. The finding demonstrates that radar can help locate a concealed feature. It does not mean that the team used radar to see the tomb’s complete contents.

What can ground-penetrating radar reveal?

GPR sends electromagnetic waves into the ground or a structure and records returning responses. Changes in those responses can indicate contrasts or features beneath the surface, which specialists interpret as possible structures, voids or other targets. Getty’s heritage documentation guidance describes GPR as a tool for investigating underground or internal structures, including features or damage such as voids and cracks in built heritage.

Radar is not an ordinary camera that sees through walls. The output is survey data that can help map likely features; it needs interpretation and may require comparison with other evidence. What it can establish depends on the target and conditions. The cited sources do not give a universal maximum depth or accuracy figure for tomb surveys, so a claimed depth or certainty should not be treated as a general rule.

GPR can be valuable when a team needs to investigate below a surface without immediately excavating. But a promising indication is not by itself proof of a chamber, a map of every object inside, or permission to open the feature. The next step should be chosen in light of the question being asked and the risk of disturbing the site.

Which method answers which question?

There is no universally best tomb-survey technology. Some tools map a landscape; others investigate subsurface features, record surface materials or track conditions over time. The table summarizes the distinctions documented in the cited heritage projects and guidance.

Method What it can help investigate Important limit or conservation consideration
LiDAR Terrain and landscape features, including tombs obscured by forest cover; used in the UNESCO report on Korean tumuli. It supports landscape mapping; the cited example does not establish a complete view of a tomb’s interior.
Resistivity survey Subsurface questions such as the study of curb stones and their condition in the Korean tumuli work. Its role is tied to the target being investigated; it should not be treated as a general interior-imaging method.
Ground-penetrating radar Likely underground or internal features; examples include tomb extent and chamber direction at Korean tumuli and locating the obscured entrance to QV 97. Responses require interpretation and depend on target and conditions. No universal survey depth or accuracy is established in the cited sources.
Seismic survey Another way to investigate a monument; English Heritage describes its use alongside non-invasive survey at Silbury Hill. Silbury Hill is not a sealed-tomb example, and the cited account does not establish a universal result or performance figure for tombs.
Infrared thermography Non-contact imaging based on temperature radiation, used to investigate a surface or shallow features. Getty notes shallow inspection depth and sensitivity to thermal changes during acquisition and to the object’s emissivity.
Portable technical instruments Examination of accessible surfaces and materials, as in the study of paintings, the sarcophagus and outer coffin in Tutankhamen’s tomb. These examine the materials presented to them; they do not reveal untouched chambers behind sealed walls.
Environmental monitoring Changes in groundwater or a tomb’s microclimate, supporting ongoing conservation decisions. Monitoring records conditions; it is not a substitute for mapping a structure or identifying its contents.

The practical comparison is not simply “remote versus invasive.” A team must also consider whether a method reaches the target, how much area it covers, which material or environmental conditions affect the result, and whether setup requires physical access. A second method may be needed to test an interpretation; in some cases, carefully approved sampling can answer a question that non-contact examination cannot.

How do imaging and remote cameras fit in?

Infrared thermography

Infrared thermography detects temperature radiation and turns it into an image without contact. Getty’s guidance describes fast acquisition and the ability to cover a large area as advantages, but the method has shallow inspection depth. Thermal changes during image capture and the object’s emissivity can affect results. It is therefore one part of an investigation, not a stand-alone scanner for the whole tomb.

Technical imaging and portable analysis

At Tutankhamen’s tomb, the Getty Conservation Institute’s project used in-situ, non-contact imaging alongside portable X-ray diffraction (XRD), portable X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and a handheld microscope to study wall paintings, the sarcophagus and the outer coffin. These tools help examine visible surfaces and materials. They should not be confused with subsurface survey: analyzing a painting or coffin does not show what lies behind a sealed wall.

Remote cameras and endoscopy

A remote-controlled filming vehicle documented inaccessible areas at Silbury Hill after researchers reopened an existing tunnel during conservation work. English Heritage’s account also describes limited excavation at the monument, so this is an example of remote recording through existing access—not a sealed tomb explored without any intervention. Getty’s report on the House of the Bicentenary lists endoscopy for characterizing stratigraphy and plaster delamination in a specific conservation context.

A camera may reduce the need for a person to enter an already accessible space, but the camera still needs a route in. Creating a new borehole or opening can alter a sealed environment or damage material. The conservation question is therefore not only what a camera can record, but how access can be obtained and what that access would change.

Why environmental monitoring is part of exploration

Locating a chamber is only one part of the problem. A tomb’s groundwater, temperature, humidity and biological conditions can affect its structure and paintings. If investigation or visitation changes those conditions, information gained about the tomb may come at a conservation cost.

UNESCO’s work on the Koguryo tombs includes groundwater readings from piezometers, monitoring of tomb microclimates, documentation and conservation training. UNESCO identifies humidity, harmful bacteria and natural weathering as threats to the tomb structures and murals, and describes planned remote monitoring and temperature-and-humidity systems. The point is not that all sites use the same equipment; it is that ongoing measurements can help conservators understand conditions and manage a particular site over time.

The Getty Conservation Institute’s integrated conservation and management project at Tutankhamen’s tomb ran from 2009 to 2019. Reported upgrades included air filtration and ventilation intended to mitigate humidity, carbon dioxide and dust, as well as recommendations for visitor management. Those measures belong to that project and should not be read as a universal equipment list or a visitor limit applicable to other tombs.

When do archaeologists decide to enter, sample or excavate?

Remote survey can reduce unnecessary disturbance, but it does not always answer every research or conservation question. The decision to proceed physically should follow the evidence, the purpose of the work and an assessment of consequences. An indication from a survey may prompt further study rather than immediate entry; an existing access point may make documentation possible without creating a new one; and a physical intervention may be justified when the expected information or conservation benefit warrants its risks.

The Tutankhamen project illustrates how approaches can be combined. Getty reports non-contact, in-situ examination and portable analysis, along with a limited number of samples approved for laboratory analysis after in-situ examination. That is evidence for a specific project, not a claim that sampling is always necessary or that its approval process applies everywhere.

UNESCO’s account of conservation work at KV22, published on 25 June 2023, describes an approach of maximum stabilization and safeguarding of wall paintings with minimum intervention and cost-effective action. The principle is useful context for understanding conservation choices, but the specific work and decisions remain tied to that tomb.

What a careful exploration plan looks like

Although the order and tools vary by site, a defensible investigation can be understood as a series of decisions rather than a single scan. Each stage should answer a question while avoiding interventions that do not add enough value.

  1. Define the question. Decide whether the goal is to locate a buried feature, map its likely extent, document visible decoration, assess material condition or monitor environmental change. A tool chosen for one target may not answer another.
  2. Record the baseline. Document the surface, surrounding landscape and known condition before considering access. This gives the team a record against which later observations can be compared.
  3. Select complementary surveys. Match the method to the target—for example, landscape mapping, resistivity or GPR for particular subsurface questions, or imaging for accessible surfaces. Treat each result as evidence with its own limits, not as a complete interior view.
  4. Assess access and environmental risk. Consider whether equipment can work from outside, whether existing access is available, and what entry, air exchange, dust, humidity change or new openings could mean for the site.
  5. Review and verify interpretations. Compare findings with the documented structure and, where useful, observations from another method. A detected indication is not by itself confirmation of every detail of a chamber.
  6. Decide whether intervention is warranted. If remote evidence leaves a consequential question unresolved, weigh the research or conservation value against the physical and environmental risks. Where sampling or access is approved, keep it limited to what the question requires and record the work.
  7. Continue monitoring and care. Use appropriate documentation and environmental observation to help assess the condition of the site after conservation or access decisions.

This sequence is a decision framework, not a universal official protocol. The UNESCO and Getty examples show that actual work differs according to the monument, its condition, available access and the question under study.

What readers should not infer from a “non-invasive” survey

  • It does not mean the tomb is fully visible. Survey instruments detect or record particular evidence; they do not provide a guaranteed inventory of rooms, objects or human remains.
  • It does not mean every step is contact-free. A project may combine remote survey with physical access, limited excavation or approved sampling. The method and intervention should be described separately.
  • It does not mean a camera can be inserted without consequences. A remote camera can use an existing route, but a new opening may itself alter the tomb or damage material.
  • It does not establish a universal accuracy or depth. The cited sources provide no general maximum depth, accuracy percentage or share of tombs explored remotely.
  • It does not prove a tomb has never been entered. The cited sites have individual histories; the fact that a feature is concealed or surveyed remotely does not establish that it is untouched.

Why the goal is managed disturbance, not a perfect scan

Archaeological exploration is a balance: obtain evidence while preserving the structure, its contents and the conditions that have helped preserve them. Landscape survey may help a team choose where to investigate; subsurface methods may indicate a likely feature; technical imaging may characterize visible materials; and monitoring may reveal environmental changes. None removes the need to interpret evidence or make a conservation judgment.

The most responsible result may be a better map and a clearer account of uncertainty—not an opened tomb. When physical access or sampling is considered, it is a separate decision that should be justified by the particular research and conservation case, rather than treated as the inevitable next step after a remote survey.
