A round hole in fossil bone is not, by itself, proof of a spear wound. Archaeologists test a suspected projectile-impact mark by documenting its three-dimensional shape, direction, depth, edge damage and microscopic traces; comparing those measurements with controlled experiments; and eliminating carnivore damage, cut marks, corrosion, trampling, weathering and other post-depositional causes. The strongest interpretations also fit the site’s chronology, associated projectile technology, prey anatomy and any embedded stone or healed trauma.

Even a well-supported impact mark may identify only projectile trauma, not the exact weapon. A thrusting spear, thrown spear, dart or arrow can leave overlapping damage, and delivery mode often cannot be separated from the hole’s morphology alone.

What counts as a possible projectile-impact mark?

Analysts begin by defining the lesion rather than calling every cavity a “spear hole.” A suspected injury may be a puncture, a complete perforation, a drag mark, a notch or a crack. Its position on the skeleton matters because ribs, vertebrae and thick limb bones respond differently to force. Location also helps test whether the damage is anatomically plausible for an attack and whether it matches the locations produced in controlled experiments.

The question is therefore comparative: does this lesion have the combination of features produced when a pointed weapon strikes bone, and does it differ from damage made by teeth, stone tools, sediment movement or chemical alteration?

The examination, step by step

  1. Record the lesion and its skeletal setting

Researchers photograph and measure the damage, identify the skeletal element and note which surface was struck. They document whether the mark is open or complete, isolated or clustered, and whether nearby fractures or flakes appear to radiate from it. In experimental studies, the lesion’s location is a critical interpretive variable, not an incidental description.

  2. Describe the outline and edge

Projectile punctures can have a relatively regular polygonal outline rather than a perfectly circular one. A perforation may show internal beveling: the opening widens toward one side inside the bone, indicating the direction in which the point entered or exited. Offset openings, asymmetric edges and a directional profile are more informative than roundness alone.

Analysts also record secondary impact damage. Cracking, detached flakes and unilateral edge loss can occur when force exceeds the bone’s local strength. These features support an impact interpretation only when their geometry and microscopic texture fit the rest of the lesion.

  3. Measure the mark in three dimensions

Three-dimensional microscopy turns a visual impression into measurable variables. Common measurements include opening area, maximum depth, volume, breadth-to-depth relationships and opening angle. Researchers compare the complete surface and the internal walls, not just a photograph of the top opening.

Experimental work found that projectile-related drags were generally deeper and more U-shaped than many slicing cut marks. Punctures were deeper than carnivore pits and differed in their area-to-volume relationships. Those are statistical tendencies from particular experiments, not universal thresholds: bone thickness, point design, impact energy and animal size all change the result.

  4. Search for residues and microscopic traces

High-magnification inspection can reveal stone fragments lodged in the lesion or diagnostic fractures on a projectile point. Embedded lithic material is especially persuasive when its composition and fracture pattern are compatible with the site’s tool technology, although its absence does not disprove projectile impact.

On the point itself, microscopic linear impact traces (MLITs) can run transverse to the impact zone and indicate the direction of entry. Diagnostic impact fractures (DIFs), together with MLITs, hafting traces and an appropriate armature shape, can establish that a tool functioned as a hunting weapon. The Abric Romaní study cautions that this evidence still may not establish how the weapon was delivered.

  5. Compare the lesion with controlled projectile experiments

Experimental reference collections are essential. Researchers fire or thrust known points into comparable animal bone, then record the resulting punctures, perforations, drags, cracks and flakes using the same imaging methods applied to archaeological specimens.

A valid comparison controls for point material and tip design, target species and bone size, impact angle, distance and delivery method. A 2014 study noted that standardized criteria were lacking and warned that spear versus arrow, point type and distance could not reliably be separated from morphology alone. An apparent match is therefore strongest when several independent measurements agree, rather than when one outline looks similar.

  6. Eliminate other taphonomic causes

Before assigning a projectile explanation, analysts test competing causes. Carnivore pits are compared by their outline, depth, internal profile and surface microtexture. Cut marks are assessed for slicing striations, shoulder shape and their usually elongated cross-section. Corrosion can make irregular cavities with chemically altered walls; trampling can produce shallow crushing, linear gouges or randomly oriented fractures; weathering can open cracks and flake exposed surfaces.

Microscopy helps because different processes damage bone at different scales. A cavity that is geometrically deep and directionally beveled but lacks the texture expected from teeth or corrosion is more consistent with impact. However, post-discard processes can erase or modify those signatures, so a damaged specimen may remain indeterminate.

  7. Integrate the archaeological context

The final interpretation combines the lesion with independent evidence. Relevant observations include projectile points or fragments from the same layer, site chronology, prey anatomy, spatial association and healed trauma that demonstrates survival after an earlier strike. The Abric Romaní investigation combined traceology, optical and three-dimensional microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, structured-light scanning and micro-computed tomography rather than relying on a single image or instrument.

How projectile marks differ from common alternatives

Explanation Geometry and depth Directionality or edge damage Microscopic and contextual checks
Projectile puncture or perforation Often relatively regular or polygonal; punctures can be deep; perforations may have a directional internal profile. Internal beveling, offset, cracking or flaking may occur. May include embedded lithic fragments, compatible impact fractures or MLITs; must match experiments and context.
Projectile drag Experimental drags were commonly deeper and more U-shaped than many cut marks. Unilateral flaking and cracking can accompany the track. In one 2020 medium-sized-animal experiment, drag marks made up 50% of recorded injuries; the frequency is experiment-specific.
Carnivore tooth pit Often shallower than experimental punctures and different in area-to-volume relationship. Rounded or crushed edges and tooth-related surface texture may be present. Check for associated scores, furrowed surfaces and a carnivore-accessible skeletal location.
Cut mark Usually a linear slicing groove rather than a deep, compact puncture. Striations and a characteristic cross-section can indicate tool motion. Compare depth, breadth-to-depth ratio and microtexture with experimental slicing marks.
Corrosion cavity Irregular chemical etching rather than a mechanically directional profile. Edges and walls may show altered or friable bone texture. Assess surface chemistry, distribution and whether corrosion affects surrounding bone.
Trampling or weathering Often shallow crushing, random cracks or surface flaking rather than a focused deep entry. Fractures may follow exposed weak planes and lack internal beveling. Inspect the whole specimen for matching weathering stages, sediment abrasion and other post-depositional damage.

What the experimental frequencies mean

Published experiments illustrate how often different injury types can appear under specified conditions, but they are not accuracy rates for identifying spear wounds in every fossil assemblage.

Experimental result Reported value Qualification
Drag marks 50% Proportion of experimental injuries in the 2020 medium-sized-animal reference experiment.
Puncture marks 24.3% Proportion of injuries in that same reference experiment.
Drag marks on ribs 40% Location share reported for those experimental drags.
Drag marks on vertebrae 34.3% Location share reported for those experimental drags.
Unilateral flaking on drags 48.6% Frequency reported in the experiment.
Cracking on drags 34.3% Frequency reported in the experiment.
Ballistic trial 90 arrows and 66 bone-hunting injuries Counts from a small-mammal experiment; they describe that trial, not a general rate of arrow or spear identification.

These figures show why context matters. A reference collection made with one animal, point design or impact condition cannot be treated as a universal catalog. Bone size and thickness can alter opening shape, depth and cracking, while later burial can remove the very traces an analyst wants to measure.

Why a hole rarely identifies “the spear”

A projectile-impact mark can support the conclusion that a pointed weapon struck bone without identifying the complete weapon system. Thrusting spears, thrown spears, darts and arrows can use different points but produce overlapping damage when angle, velocity and target bone vary. The 2014 methodological assessment specifically found that spear versus arrow, point type and distance could not reliably be distinguished from morphology alone.

Delivery mode becomes more defensible when several lines of evidence converge: a point’s dimensions and hafting traces, diagnostic impact fractures, MLIT directionality, the chronology of the technology, and a lesion that matches experiments using the relevant target and point. The Abric Romaní authors explicitly did not establish the delivery mode from their evidence.

“The main methodological result consists of the recognition of drag and puncture marks as the only diagnostic categories in PIMs identification.”

— Authors of the 2020 Scientific Reports study

That statement does not mean every drag or puncture is automatically a hunting wound. It means those categories were the diagnostic ones within the study’s experimental framework; each archaeological specimen still requires exclusion of alternatives and contextual support.

Why 3D analysis is central

Two lesions can look alike in a photograph while differing in depth, volume or internal angle. Three-dimensional digital analysis captures those differences and allows the archaeological mark to be compared quantitatively with experimental reference surfaces. The Late Epigravettian projectile study concluded that 3D digital analysis has a crucial role in taphonomic research because it makes the comparison reproducible rather than dependent on visual description alone.

Structured-light scanning can document overall geometry, while optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy resolve edge and surface texture. Micro-CT can reveal internal walls, hidden cracks and the relationship between an opening and the surrounding bone without cutting the specimen. These methods are complementary: a scan records form, microscopy records microtexture and micro-CT exposes internal structure.

A practical decision framework for a suspected spear injury

  • Classify the lesion: puncture, perforation, drag, notch or crack.
  • Check geometry: outline regularity, depth, volume, breadth-to-depth ratio, opening angle and internal beveling.
  • Check direction: offset openings, beveled walls and asymmetric flaking should indicate a coherent force direction.
  • Check secondary damage: record cracking, flakes and edge crushing without treating any one feature as decisive.
  • Check microtraces: look for embedded lithics, diagnostic impact fractures and MLITs where the projectile is available.
  • Test alternatives: compare with carnivore pits, cut marks, corrosion, trampling and weathering using the same 3D and microscopic criteria.
  • Test the experiment: use a reference collection that matches the point, bone, animal and impact conditions as closely as possible.
  • Test the context: ask whether chronology, associated technology, skeletal anatomy and independent trauma evidence support hunting.
  • State the narrowest defensible conclusion: projectile impact may be supportable even when “spear,” exact point type or delivery mode is not.

What makes the conclusion strong or weak?

Strong support

The most persuasive case combines a diagnostic puncture or perforation, directional geometry, a compatible depth and 3D profile, impact cracking or flaking, microscopic residues or point fractures, and an archaeological context that independently supports projectile use. Embedded stone is particularly compelling when it can be securely associated with the lesion.

Weak or indeterminate support

A shallow, isolated, roughly circular cavity with no measurable directionality, no matching experiment and substantial corrosion or weathering should not be labeled a spear wound. Likewise, a visually attractive polygonal outline is insufficient if carnivore damage or trampling fits the full specimen better. There is no universal accuracy percentage for “spear-hole” identification because published frequencies belong to individual experiments, not all archaeological materials.

How archaeologists report the result

Careful reports separate observation from interpretation. They describe the lesion’s location, dimensions, 3D profile, edge condition and microtexture first; identify which experimental marks provide the closest comparison; list the taphonomic alternatives considered; and then state whether the evidence supports projectile impact, leaves it possible but unresolved, or favors another cause. If the evidence supports impact but not a delivery system, the conclusion should stop at projectile trauma rather than claim a spear hunt.

This conservative wording is a strength, not a failure. Fossil bone records a damaged surface altered by time, and the scientifically defensible answer is the most specific explanation that survives measurement, experimental comparison and contextual testing.
