Archaeologists work out a monastery’s age and the purpose of its buildings by combining evidence: the sequence of walls and deposits, a structure’s layout and masonry, excavated materials, historical records, and scientific dates from suitable samples. Each clue answers a different question. A radiocarbon result dates the organic material tested; tree rings date timber growth and can indicate when a tree was felled; relationships between walls and deposits establish which features came earlier or later. Archaeologists then assess how securely each clue relates to a particular building phase.
How do archaeologists know how old a monastery is?
Most monasteries are not single-period sites. Buildings were added, altered, reused, and sometimes replaced, so archaeologists reconstruct a sequence of construction and use rather than assigning one date to the whole complex. They first establish how features relate to one another, then use dated materials and documentary evidence to place parts of that sequence in time.
Stratigraphy establishes relative order
Stratigraphy is the study of relationships among layers of soil, deposits, and structures. If a wall cuts through an earlier deposit, for example, the wall must be later than that deposit. Differences in masonry or the way one wall meets another can also reveal whether a structure was added to an existing building or formed part of the same construction phase.

At Łekno in central Poland, archaeological, structural, and stratigraphic evidence had already indicated a sequence of construction for the rotunda and monastery buildings. Radiocarbon analysis was used to test and refine the chronology of those separate phases. The peer-reviewed Łekno study shows how dating methods can build on a sequence established through other evidence.

Radiocarbon dating tests suitable organic material
Radiocarbon dating measures the age of formerly living material, not the age of a wall directly. The sample must also have a credible connection to the event being dated. At Łekno, researchers dated small charcoal fragments retrieved from calcareous and gypsum mortar. They interpreted the charcoal as fuel used in firing that became incorporated during mortar production. Most of the resulting dates formed groups that supported construction in separate periods and agreed with constraints from historical sources.
This example does not mean any charcoal found near masonry dates its construction. The sample’s origin, its context, and the way results are modelled all affect what can be concluded. Historic England’s overview of archaeological scientific dating describes radiocarbon dating among the methods used to investigate archaeological sites and historic buildings.

Dendrochronology dates timber growth and felling
Dendrochronology compares a timber’s annual tree-ring pattern with dated reference sequences. When enough suitable rings survive, analysis can establish when the tree grew and may identify a felling date or range. That can constrain building work, but it is not automatically the date the timber was installed: timber may have been stored or reused.

Its value in a particular monastery depends on the timber’s condition, the rings preserved, and the archaeological context.

How can archaeologists tell what each ruined building was for?
Building identification is an interpretation based on physical evidence and context, not a label that can always be read directly from ruins. Archaeologists examine foundations, wall lines, doorways, room divisions, floor levels, and the way masonry joins. The overall arrangement can suggest how spaces related to one another, while excavation may uncover buried foundations or basements that are no longer visible above ground.
Layout and relationships between structures
At Łekno, excavators identified remains of a Romanesque rotunda and a Cistercian monastery, including an oratory, church, and abbot’s house. Their interpretation drew on archaeological, structural, and stratigraphic work. The study’s findings concern that site; they are not a universal plan for every monastery.

At Thame Park, the surviving north and south ranges flank an open courtyard. The Archaeology Data Service and Vernacular Architecture Group record says the courtyard may represent the monastic cloister. That wording matters: the identification is presented as a possibility, not a certainty.
Interpretations can change
A proposed function becomes stronger when several clues fit together, but interpretations may be revised as evidence is reconsidered. The University of Reading’s Glastonbury Abbey project reports reassessing the excavation archive and challenging some earlier claims about the site’s structures and history. A careful account therefore distinguishes what remains show from what their arrangement suggests, and makes uncertainty clear where the evidence does not settle the question.

What do the dates at individual monasteries show?
Published dates are specific to the material, structure, and context examined. They illustrate what a result can look like, not a date that can be transferred to another monastery.

How should different dating evidence be compared?
Before treating a date as the age of a building, check what was dated and how it relates to the construction or use phase. These questions help keep conclusions proportionate to the evidence:
- What material or relationship was examined? Radiocarbon dates the tested organic material; dendrochronology dates timber growth and may establish felling; stratigraphy establishes sequence.
- How secure is the link to the building phase? The sample’s location and context explain why it is associated with a construction or use event.
- What result and uncertainty were reported? Keep published date ranges intact rather than turning them into an exact year that the evidence does not support.
- Could another explanation fit? Reuse, later alterations, disturbed deposits, and uncertain building functions can affect an interpretation.
At Łekno, the radiocarbon groups agreed with historical constraints and the structural and stratigraphic sequence. Such agreement is useful when each line of evidence has a sound context; it does not remove the need to report uncertainty or investigate conflicting evidence.
