Appliance exchange usually combines a purchase of a new appliance with a separate offer for the old one—but the offer may be a provisional trade-in valuation, a checkout incentive, or removal tied to delivery. The old unit may be inspected before its value is confirmed, pickup may happen with delivery or later, and installation can be limited to basic setup. The exact terms depend on the retailer, program, product and address.
What appliance exchange means
“Appliance exchange” is not one standardized service. In an inspection-based trade-in, a retailer or its exchange partner estimates a value from details you provide, then checks the used appliance before confirming the amount. LG Electronics India’s exchange terms, for example, say a quote is not binding until the used product has been evaluated. The final offer can change if the inspection finds differences in model, function, accessories or physical condition.
Other programs are better understood as a purchase incentive plus removal, rather than payment for the old appliance at its market value. LG Australia’s purchase terms say its trade-in discount or incentive is not considered actual value paid for the old appliance. Collection is limited to serviceable postcodes and subject to preparation conditions. A credit that helps reduce the cost of a new appliance therefore does not necessarily mean the retailer has bought the old one for that amount.
These arrangements can look similar at checkout, but the distinction affects what you are agreeing to: whether you receive a separately assessed amount, whether the benefit depends on buying a particular new product, and whether collection is included. Look at the offer terms rather than relying on the word “exchange” alone.

How the exchange process usually unfolds
A common process is to select an eligible new appliance, request an exchange or removal offer, provide information about the old unit, prepare it for collection, and let the pickup agent verify it. The exact order is program-specific. For LG India, the FAQ says pickup is arranged after successful delivery of the new product; LG Australia’s terms describe removal at the delivery premises, subject to eligibility and readiness requirements. Do not assume the old appliance will be collected at the same appointment as delivery.
- Check eligibility. Confirm that the new appliance, old appliance type and delivery address qualify. Some offers restrict collection by serviceable postcode or require a similar type and size of old unit.
- Enter accurate details. Give the old unit’s brand and model, capacity or size where requested, working condition, physical condition and included accessories. These are among the factors LG India’s exchange terms say may be considered.
- Read what the displayed amount represents. Establish whether it is a provisional valuation, a purchase-linked discount, or another kind of incentive, and when it becomes final.
- Prepare the old unit. Follow the program’s instructions for emptying, disconnecting and uninstalling it, and make sure the collection team can reach it safely.
- Arrange or confirm collection. Check whether the provider schedules pickup after delivery, combines it with delivery, or requires a separate appointment.
- Review the inspection result. If the program allows an inspection-based adjustment, compare the final offer with the estimate before deciding whether to proceed.
- Keep the transaction records. Save the order details, exchange terms, confirmation and any final valuation or pickup record so you can check what was agreed.
This is a practical outline, not a universal sequence. A specific provider may combine steps or make collection contingent on a successful delivery. The order confirmation and local terms determine what applies to your transaction.
Why the exchange valuation can change
An online figure may be an estimate based on the information entered, not a guaranteed payment. LG India’s FAQ says its online amount is an estimate and the final amount follows inspection. Its exchange terms identify brand, model, size or capacity, physical and functional condition, and basic accessories or components as possible evaluation factors. If the details entered do not match the appliance presented, the inspector may offer a different amount under that program’s rules.
For LG India, the terms state: “All quotes shall be finalized post evaluation of the Used Product, and no binding offer is made until We have had a chance to inspect the Used Product.” That is a description of that program’s terms, not a universal rule for every retailer. The same program’s FAQ says a customer can decline the final offer and cancel pickup. Check whether your own offer gives you the same choice and whether declining affects delivery, a discount or any other part of the order.

To reduce avoidable surprises, report the model and condition carefully, and gather the accessories the offer requires before collection. If the appliance has a functional fault or visible damage, disclose it rather than assuming it will not affect the quote. Before confirming the order, find out which inspection findings can change the amount, how the revised amount is presented, and what you can do if you do not accept it.
LG India’s published terms include indicative exchange values by category, capacity and condition, in Indian rupees. Those figures apply to that offer and may change; they are not a general resale-price guide or a benchmark for another country or provider. No single industry-wide valuation formula or average value applies across appliance exchanges.
When pickup happens and how to prepare
Collection timing depends on the program and address. LG India’s FAQ says a pickup associate contacts the customer to arrange collection after the new LG product has been delivered successfully. By contrast, LG Australia’s terms describe removal at the delivery premises, where the address is covered and the old appliance meets the stated readiness requirements. These are different program examples, not competing promises about what every retailer will do.
Check the collection instructions before delivery day. Depending on the offer, the old unit may need to be empty, disconnected from power and water, uninstalled, accessible and safe to handle. Costco’s US guidance says certain built-in appliances and appliances without installation coverage must be professionally uninstalled and ready before delivery if the customer wants haul-away. Voltas says an old air conditioner must be uninstalled and ready for pickup; its terms treat de-installation as a separate service that may involve a charge.

In particular, verify these details with the provider handling your order:
- Whether the old unit must be the same or a similar type and size as the new one.
- Whether it must be empty, disconnected, drained or uninstalled before the crew arrives.
- Whether required accessories or components must be handed over with the appliance.
- Whether stairs, narrow passages or other access constraints affect collection.
- Whether removal has a separate fee, or depends on the delivery address.
- Whether the old unit must be ready before the new appliance arrives or can be collected later.
These are points to verify, not requirements that apply to every exchange. For example, an air conditioner may need separate de-installation, while a freestanding appliance may have different preparation instructions. Follow the written instructions for the specific appliance and collection service.
What installation may include—and what it may not
“Installation” can mean anything from placing and leveling an appliance to connecting it and testing it, so the service description matters. GE Appliances says its authorized delivery agents deliver, uncrate and inspect appliances, set them in place, level them, connect them to an existing proper power source and test them. That description is an example of a particular service, not a promise that all retailers perform the same work.
Some work may be excluded even when installation is selected. Costco’s US service guidance lists carpentry, electrical and plumbing work among tasks its team cannot perform. Some appliances may also require a separate appointment for haul-away. If the location needs new wiring, plumbing changes, cabinetry work or another modification, ask who must arrange that work and whether it has to be completed before delivery.

Parts are another potential boundary. Whirlpool says installation parts may be added when installation is selected, and checkout can identify compatible parts for self-installation. A hookup part or installation kit is not universal: the right components depend on the appliance model, the existing connection and the manufacturer’s installation instructions. Confirm compatibility for your model rather than buying a generic kit based only on appliance type.
How to compare two exchange offers
When more than one offer is available, compare the terms that affect the total benefit and the work you must arrange. A larger displayed credit may be less useful if it is conditional, difficult to qualify for or paired with a collection fee. Likewise, an installation offer may not cover the plumbing or electrical changes your location needs. Use the actual terms for your appliance and delivery address; the programs cited here do not establish a universal ranking.
- Value type: Is the offer a separately assessed trade-in value, a checkout credit, or a removal incentive linked to a purchase?
- Valuation certainty: Is the displayed amount provisional? What model, condition or accessory findings can change it?
- Payment or credit timing: Is the benefit applied at checkout, confirmed after inspection, or dependent on completed pickup?
- Pickup logistics: Does collection happen with delivery or later, is the address covered, and is there a fee?
- Preparation: Must you empty, disconnect or uninstall the appliance, supply accessories, or arrange special access?
- Installation scope: Does the service include placement, connections and testing, or only some of those tasks? Are electrical, plumbing, gas or built-in modifications excluded?
- Fallback: Can you decline a revised valuation, and what happens if the crew cannot collect the old unit?
Ask for answers in writing when a point could change your decision. In particular, distinguish the new-appliance delivery commitment from the old-appliance pickup arrangement; they may have different scheduling and eligibility conditions.

Common problems and what to do
The final offer is lower than the estimate
Ask which observed difference led to the change—such as model, function, condition or missing accessories—and compare it with the information you submitted and the offer terms. If your program permits declining the revised amount, decide before handing over the old unit or authorizing removal. LG India’s FAQ explicitly says customers can decline its final offer and cancel pickup; do not assume another program has the same fallback.

The pickup agent does not collect the appliance
Check the reason against the preparation and eligibility conditions: the unit may not be ready, the address may not be covered, or the appliance may not meet the type or size requirement. Ask the provider how collection can be rescheduled and whether the exchange benefit is affected. The cited terms do not establish one universal remedy or rescheduling policy.
Delivery is scheduled, but pickup is not
Confirm whether pickup is supposed to be arranged only after successful delivery or whether it requires a separate booking. LG India’s process gives an example of post-delivery scheduling, so a gap between delivery and removal can be part of a program rather than a missed same-day service. Keep the old appliance accessible until the collection appointment is confirmed.
The installation team cannot complete a connection
Ask whether the obstacle is an existing connection, a required part, or excluded modification work. Retailer installation services may not cover electrical, plumbing or carpentry changes, and model-compatible parts may be needed. Arrange any excluded work through a qualified provider and confirm the requirements in the appliance instructions before the installation appointment.

Use a short pre-check to avoid treating a conditional offer as a guaranteed amount or service:
- Identify whether the benefit is a trade-in valuation, discount or removal incentive.
- Check the offer’s eligibility for the old appliance, new model and delivery postcode.
- Record the old appliance’s model, condition and accessories accurately.
- Find out whether inspection can alter the quote and whether you can reject the revised offer.
- Confirm pickup timing, preparation steps, access requirements and possible fees.
- Read what installation includes for your model and address, including exclusions and required parts.
Retailer and manufacturer pages describe different regional programs: the examples here include LG India and Australia, US Costco and Whirlpool guidance, GE Appliances’ delivery service, and Voltas air-conditioner terms. Their details illustrate the decisions to check, but the applicable promise is the one attached to your own order.
