API testing checks whether software interfaces handle requests, return expected results, exchange data correctly, and enforce security and performance requirements. Because APIs connect parts of an application behind the scenes, a failure at that boundary can break a visible feature even when the interface itself looks fine.

What API testing checks

An API is an interface that lets software systems communicate and exchange data. API testing exercises that interface directly: it can verify how an endpoint handles valid and invalid input, whether its response status and content are appropriate, whether connected services exchange data correctly, and whether the system meets selected performance and security expectations.

A successful status code alone is not enough to show that an API behaves correctly. A test may also need to check response fields, error handling, compatibility with consumers, or the result of a multi-step workflow. The exact assertions depend on the API’s intended behavior and the risks the team needs to address.

Which kind of API test answers which question?

API test types cover different scopes and risks. They complement one another rather than compete as interchangeable alternatives.

Test type What it checks Typical question
Contract Whether requests and responses follow agreed interface expectations. Can a service change without breaking consumers that depend on its interface?
Endpoint or unit-level One focused operation, including its parameters and error handling. Does this endpoint handle the inputs and cases it is meant to support?
Integration Whether components or services work together and data flows between them. Does this application pass and receive the right data from another component?
End-to-end A complete user-relevant workflow spanning multiple endpoints or APIs. Can the whole workflow complete across the services it relies on?
Regression Whether relevant behavior still works after a change. Did this update introduce a defect or compatibility problem?
Performance or load How a service behaves under simulated traffic. Does it respond acceptably under the expected or peak load being tested?
Security Properties such as access control, authentication, input validation, and data exposure. Can users access only what they are authorized to access?

These scopes matter when choosing coverage. An endpoint check can isolate a faulty operation; an integration test can expose a data-flow problem; an end-to-end test can reveal that a workflow fails across several services. Load and security checks address risks that a normal functional test may not expose.

How API testing fits into development

Testing can begin before an API is implemented and continue as it changes. Contract expectations can be agreed at design time, while focused endpoint checks can run during development. Relevant regression tests can then be automated in a continuous integration and delivery pipeline so changes are checked regularly.

Integration and end-to-end tests can chain requests, passing data from one step to another to exercise interactions or a larger workflow. Performance tests use simulated traffic, and security tests should reflect the API’s actual authorization and data risks. The right mix depends on the architecture, consumers, and consequences of failure—not on a single universal test suite.

Why API testing and monitoring are different

Development testing is intended to find selected defects before a release reaches users. Production monitoring observes deployed systems through telemetry and historical behavior, helping teams identify trends or problems in actual operation. Both support reliability, but a passing test suite is not production monitoring, complete coverage, or a guarantee that a service will never fail.

Use API specifications to guide security checks

An API description such as OpenAPI can help identify operations, expected inputs, and declared security requirements. It is a useful map for planning coverage, but it does not prove that the implementation enforces those requirements correctly.

OWASP’s Web Security Testing Guide API testing section discusses testing APIs and the role of specifications. OWASP’s REST Security Cheat Sheet recommends building a per-operation security test matrix from effective OpenAPI security requirements. In practice, check token behavior directly, including requests with no credentials, valid credentials, and credentials that do not meet the declared requirement.

When actual behavior differs from the documented expectation, investigate the discrepancy against the intended schema and documentation. An undocumented response field is not automatically a contract violation: a schema may allow additional properties. The key question is whether the implementation’s behavior matches the intended interface and security policy.

Choosing coverage that fits the risk

  • For a single operation’s input and error behavior, use focused endpoint checks.
  • For compatibility between independently developed services, establish and test contract expectations.
  • For data passed between components, test the integration and its sequence of requests.
  • For a user-visible process that crosses services, exercise the complete workflow with end-to-end coverage.
  • For changes that could disrupt existing behavior, rerun relevant regression checks.
  • For capacity and access-control concerns, add load and security checks with explicit conditions and assertions.

Postman describes API testing as confirming that “API endpoints, methods, and integrations work as expected and that your API can meet the expected load.” Its documentation covers API functionality and performance testing and integration testing with collections. These examples illustrate documented capabilities, not a claim that one product is the right choice for every team.
