Animals produce color through pigments that selectively absorb wavelengths of light, through tissue structures that scatter or redirect light, or through both working together. The key difference is the mechanism: pigment color is defined by absorption by molecules, while structural color comes from how light interacts with the arrangement of materials in a tissue. “Structural” does not mean that pigment molecules have no structure, and structural color is not always iridescent.

The difference is how the light is changed

To see an animal’s color, light must reach it and some of that light must return to an observer. A pigment changes the spectrum mainly by absorbing selected wavelengths; the wavelengths left to be reflected contribute to the visible color. Structural color arises when the arrangement of tissue materials changes how light travels, scatters, or combines. In real feathers, scales, skin, and other tissues, these mechanisms can overlap, so a color is not always explained by assigning it to just one category.

The word “structure” can cause confusion. Pigment molecules have chemical structures, and those structures affect which wavelengths they absorb. But in this distinction, “structural color” refers to optical effects produced by organized or variable arrangements of materials—often at micro- or nanoscale—not simply to the fact that molecules have shapes. The useful question is whether the color is primarily due to selective absorption by pigment, or to the way a tissue’s physical architecture alters light.

Question Pigmentary color Structural color
Main mechanism Pigment molecules absorb some wavelengths and leave others available to be reflected. Tissue structures alter light through effects such as scattering, interference, diffraction, or related optical processes.
What determines the result? The pigment’s chemistry and its absorption profile. The arrangement of materials and differences in their refractive indices, among other features of the optical structure.
Typical examples in the reviewed account Melanin-associated dark tones; carotenoid-associated reds, oranges, and yellows. Blue or ultraviolet feather colors and some angle-dependent iridescent colors.
Does it change with angle? Absorption itself is not the defining angle-dependent effect, though the surrounding tissue and surface can affect appearance. Some structural colors shift with viewing or illumination geometry; others are not conspicuously iridescent.
Can it occur with the other mechanism? Yes. Pigment can filter light reflected by a structure. Yes. A structure can provide a reflective background that is modified by pigment.

How pigments make color

A pigment’s chemistry determines which wavelengths it absorbs. As Matthew D. Shawkey and colleagues put it in their 2017 review, “Pigments selectively absorb some wavelengths of light while allowing others to be reflected, and their absorption profile depends on their underlying chemistry.” The returning light therefore has a different wavelength balance from the light that arrived. The eye and lighting conditions affect how that balance is experienced, but the pigment’s selective absorption is the defining mechanism.

Melanin: black, brown, and grey

Melanin is described in the review as the most widespread color-producing pigment in animals. Its broad absorption of visible light contributes to black, brown, and grey coloration. The review distinguishes eumelanin, associated with black, from phaeomelanin, associated with rusty red or rufous tones. Those examples show why “melanin” does not imply one exact shade: the pigment type and its optical context matter.

Carotenoids: many reds, oranges, and yellows

Carotenoids are acquired through diet and commonly contribute bright red, orange, and yellow colors. Their presence in an animal is not evidence that all of the resulting appearance comes from pigment alone: as the goldfinch example below shows, pigment can color light returned by a structural background.

Pterins and other pigment families

Pterins can contribute colors across a range from white to red. The review cites red pterin pigments in the butterfly Pachliopta hector. It also discusses parrot psittacofulvins, turaco turacoverdins, and biliverdin in avian eggs. These examples make clear that melanin and carotenoids are not an exhaustive list of animal pigments; they are useful, familiar examples of a broader range of pigment chemistries.

How tissue structures make color

Structural color depends on light interacting with a physical arrangement of materials whose optical properties differ. The reviewed account emphasizes refractive-index variation and structures at micro- or nanoscale. Depending on the arrangement, light may be scattered, interfere, diffract, or be selectively reflected. Shuichi Kinoshita’s review identifies thin-film and multilayer interference, photonic crystals, diffraction gratings, and light scattering as relevant processes. These are different routes to structural color, not interchangeable names for one single effect.

Interference in thin films and layers

In thin-film or multilayer systems, light reflected from different boundaries can combine. The resulting appearance depends on how those reflected portions interact, so changing the optical path through the layers can change which wavelengths are reinforced in the returning light. This is one reason layered tissue can produce color without relying only on a colored pigment molecule.

Photonic crystals and diffraction gratings

Photonic crystals and diffraction gratings are organized structures that influence which wavelengths and directions of light are reflected or redirected. Their contribution depends on the pattern and spacing of the structure. The name of a process alone does not tell you whether the resulting color will look iridescent: angle dependence is a property of the particular optical system and viewing conditions.

Scattering from tissue materials

Scattering occurs when light encounters variations in a tissue’s optical properties. The review describes structural color from nanoscale reflective tissues with variation in refractive index. In feathers, ordered arrays of melanosomes embedded in keratin can produce iridescent colors. By contrast, more amorphous keratin-and-air arrays can produce non-iridescent blue, turquoise, violet, or ultraviolet appearances. The contrast illustrates that structural color can arise from different material arrangements and need not shift visibly with angle.

Why many animal colors combine pigment and structure

The pigment-versus-structure distinction is a practical way to describe mechanisms, not a rule that each visible color must have one cause. Pigments can absorb part of a spectrum produced by a reflecting structure; structures can create a background on which a pigment is seen; and the same biological material can participate in more than one optical role. The review notes that assigning a color to a single mechanism can be difficult.

American goldfinch: pigment over a structural background

The yellow of American goldfinch feathers is described as carotenoid color over a white structural background. The pigment filters the light associated with that background, so “yellow pigment” is an incomplete account of the whole optical system. The visible result depends on both the selective absorption and the light returned by the feather structure.

Budgerigar: pigment sharpens a structural green

Budgerigar green feathers combine pigment with ordered nanostructure. In the reviewed explanation, pigment absorption removes blue spillover from the structural color and makes the green reflectance peak more saturated. This is a clear example of a mechanism working as a spectral filter: the structure contributes the reflective color, and pigment changes which parts of that light remain prominent.

Gecko scales: different mechanisms in neighboring colors

In Phelsuma lineata, the review describes melanic black, structural blue, pteridine orange, and green regions produced by a mixture of structural and pigmentary effects. This example cautions against treating the animal—or even a single patch of skin—as if it used one universal color mechanism. Different visible regions can arise in different ways.

Bird iridescence: melanosomes with more than one role

In iridescent bird feathers, melanosomes can act both as light-absorbing pigment and as high-refractive-index elements in an ordered structure. Calling them simply “pigment” or simply “structure” misses the interaction. The optical result comes from the way these components are arranged and from how that arrangement interacts with light.

Lobster: a pigment–protein complex and a spectral shift

The review describes a carotenoid–protein complex associated with a shift from 488 to 632 nm and reports live and cooked lobster appearing blue and red, respectively. Those figures and that example are specific to the reviewed account; they should not be turned into a general rule that cooking every crustacean produces the same color change.

Structural color is not the same as iridescence or gloss

Iridescence is an angle-related change in hue

Iridescence describes an apparent hue that changes with viewing or illumination angle as the optical path through a structure changes. Some structural colors show this shifting appearance, but others do not. The non-iridescent blue feather structures described above are a direct counterexample to the idea that all structural color must flash or change hue when viewed from another direction.

Gloss is mirror-like reflection

Gloss is predominantly specular, mirror-like reflection from a surface; it is not a synonym for structural color or iridescence. A smooth surface can look glossy without showing an angle-dependent hue shift. The review’s example of pigmented tinamou eggs combines pigment color with gloss, demonstrating that surface shine and the mechanism producing the underlying color are separate questions.

Color depends on the whole optical system and the observer

A useful explanation of animal color has to account for more than a pigment name or a nanoscale pattern. Pigments, layers, tissue materials, and structures can jointly affect brightness, hue, saturation, and whether the appearance changes with angle. Illumination and the observer’s position also matter: the light reaching the tissue and the light returning from it are part of what is seen.

Some structural colors extend into ultraviolet wavelengths. That does not mean a human observer sees ultraviolet as a visible hue; it means the optical effects can involve wavelengths beyond the human-visible colors discussed in everyday descriptions. The reviewed mechanisms explain how tissues interact with light, not the complete way every animal perceives those wavelengths or uses color in behavior.

Cephalopod skin offers an example beyond feathers and scales. The cephalopod review discusses chromatophores, which contain pigment, alongside iridophores and leucophores, which act as structural reflectors. Together, these skin components contribute to appearance and behavior, including camouflage. This system reinforces the broader point: biological color can involve multiple kinds of cells and optical mechanisms working as a coordinated whole.

A practical way to distinguish the mechanisms

When deciding whether a description refers to pigmentary or structural color, ask what is doing the main optical work rather than relying on the color name. A blue patch, for example, is not automatically structural, and a yellow patch is not automatically pigmentary. The examples above include structural blue and pigment-based yellow, but they also show that mixed cases are common.

  • Look for an absorption explanation. If the account says a molecule absorbs selected wavelengths and the remaining light is reflected, it is describing pigmentary color.
  • Look for an architecture explanation. If it describes layers, arrays, refractive-index differences, scattering, interference, or diffraction, it is describing structural effects.
  • Check whether the explanation includes both. A pigment may filter a structural reflection, or a component such as a melanosome may contribute to both absorption and the structure’s optical behavior.
  • Do not use angle change as the only test. A shifting hue is evidence of iridescence, but structural color can be non-iridescent.
  • Separate shine from hue. Gloss describes mirror-like reflection and can coexist with pigment color without establishing that the hue is structural.

The most accurate short answer is therefore not “pigments are chemical, structures are physical.” Both involve physical interactions between light and biological material. The distinction is that pigment color is primarily produced by selective molecular absorption, while structural color is primarily produced by how tissue architecture redirects, scatters, or combines light. Many animal colors are best understood as the result of both.
