Yes, you may be able to find an Android phone while it is offline—but the map may show only where it was last online, or where another participating Android device recently detected it. Google Find Hub can use an encrypted recent location saved before the phone lost its connection, and its crowdsourced network can detect a missing phone’s Bluetooth signal. Neither method guarantees a current location. Finding a phone after it shuts down is a separate, limited feature available only on certain supported models.

What “offline” means for Find Hub

For Find Hub, “offline” does not necessarily mean “unlocatable.” It means the missing phone cannot currently send its location to Google over its own internet connection. Depending on its settings and circumstances, Find Hub may still have an encrypted location the phone saved earlier, or a location reported after another Android device detected it over Bluetooth.

Those are different kinds of evidence. A stored location tells you where the phone was when it last saved a usable location. A network detection can be newer, but depends on another participating device passing close enough to detect the missing phone. Either way, the map’s point is not automatically the phone’s live position.

Google’s guidance, as of October 2026, describes both mechanisms and the settings that control them. Menu wording and paths can change as Android and Find Hub are updated, so use Settings search for Find Hub if the labels on your phone differ.

(The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)

Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

How Find Hub can locate a phone without its own connection

1. Encrypted recent location saved before it went offline

While the phone is online, Find Hub can store an encrypted recent location. If the phone later loses Wi-Fi and mobile data, Find Hub may display that saved point. Google describes this as the device’s location when it was last online, not as a live location. The longer the phone has been offline, the more important it is to treat the displayed point as a lead rather than proof of where it is now.

2. A Bluetooth detection relayed by another Android device

If the owner has enabled a Find Hub network mode, participating Android devices can scan for nearby items over Bluetooth. When one detects the missing phone, it can securely send a detection location to Find Hub. The owner can then see a location and an approximate last-seen time. This is crowdsourced assistance: the missing phone itself does not need an internet connection at the moment of detection, but a suitable participating device must come within Bluetooth range and make a report.

Network detections do not guarantee continuous tracking. A phone in a busy area may have more chances of passing near participating devices than one in an isolated location, but Google does not publish an offline-finding success rate, average detection time, or network coverage percentage. A setting that permits broader network participation is not a promise that a device will be found.

  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

How busy-place and everywhere reports differ

In the default busy-places approach, reports from multiple Android devices are aggregated before Find Hub displays a calculated location. Google says this is intended to help locate items in busy places while protecting the privacy of devices contributing detections. In the everywhere mode, a report may be used even when only one device detected the item. That can help in remote areas, but is a different choice about when a network report can be used. It still depends on a participating phone detecting the missing device.

Choose what your phone does when it is offline

Find Hub documents four settings under Find your offline devices. Search Settings for “Find Hub,” then look for that option. The exact route to the setting can vary by Android version and phone maker; if the wording is not present, consult the maker’s instructions for your device.

Setting Encrypted recent location Uses the crowdsourced network? What to expect
Off No offline recent locations are stored for this purpose. No. The phone does not use the offline network and does not store an encrypted recent location for offline finding.
Without network Yes. No. Find Hub can use the phone’s encrypted recent location and those for connected Fast Pair accessories. It cannot use network detections or tracker tags in this mode.
With network in busy places only Yes. Yes, in busy places. Network help is limited to busy places. A screen lock is required to receive the network’s help finding your own items.
With network everywhere Yes. Yes, in busy and remote areas. A report can be used even when a single device detects the item. This broadens where network help may apply; it does not ensure coverage. A screen lock is required to receive network help finding your own items.

Android 8.0 and earlier cannot participate in the broader Find Hub network, according to Google’s current guidance. Encrypted recent locations for the device and connected accessories may still be stored. Feature availability can depend on device and software support, so check the settings on the phone rather than assuming a particular mode is available.

Can you find a phone if it is turned off?

Sometimes, but only on supported phones and only for a limited period. Google’s current documentation names Pixel 8, Pixel 9, and Pixel 10 series as examples of phones that may remain locatable for a few hours after they shut down or their battery runs out. This is not a general capability of every Android phone.

For this power-off finding to work, Google says the offline network setting must be enabled, and Bluetooth and Location must have been on when the phone shut down. The capability is therefore something to prepare in advance; enabling settings after the phone is already off cannot meet those conditions. Even on a supported model, the “few hours” description is not a guarantee of a particular duration or a successful detection.

A phone that has merely lost its network connection is not necessarily powered off. The saved-location and Bluetooth-network mechanisms described above can still apply while it has power. Conversely, a phone that has been off longer than its supported post-shutdown window may no longer be findable through the power-off feature.

Why Find Hub may show an old location or no location

A stale point can be the last location saved while the phone was online. A blank map can mean Find Hub has no usable stored location and no network detection to display. Google lists several reasons a location may be unavailable:

  • The phone has no power, is damaged, or cannot report a location.
  • It has no cellular or Wi-Fi connection, or is in Airplane mode.
  • Wi-Fi is turned off, which Google also identifies as a possible cause of location unavailability.
  • The offline-finding setting does not allow the relevant stored-location or network method.
  • No participating Android device has passed close enough to detect it, or the phone is outside the applicable network mode.
  • The encrypted recent location has not synced. Google’s troubleshooting guidance describes an out-of-sync location and a Sync recent location step.

These causes are not interchangeable: for example, switching to a broader network mode cannot make a phone with no remaining power broadcast Bluetooth, and a last-online point does not become current just because it appears on the map. If Google’s troubleshooting screen offers Sync recent location, follow that prompt; it addresses a synchronization problem, not a missing nearby detection.

How precise is the location?

Find Hub’s displayed position is an estimate. Google’s lost-device guidance gives context for location methods: GPS can be accurate to around 20 metres in suitable conditions, but may be inaccurate indoors or underground; a location based on mobile towers may be accurate only to a few thousand metres. These are Google’s examples for location accuracy generally, not a promised accuracy range for every offline Find Hub result.

To maintain the grip and prevent accidental falls, it's a good practice to periodically reapply pressure to the suction cup.

Keep the timestamp and the setting in mind when interpreting a point. A recent network detection may be more useful than a much older last-online location, but neither proves the phone is still at that exact spot. If the estimated area is broad, check likely nearby locations and consider whether the phone could have moved since the reported time.

Finding a location is not the same as locking or erasing the phone

Offline location assistance does not make remote security commands work without a connection. Google lists these requirements for remote lock or erase actions: the phone must have power, mobile data or Wi-Fi, a Google Account, Find Hub enabled, and visibility on Google Play. If the phone cannot connect, a command may not be able to reach it until it is online.

If the phone cannot be found, Google advises contacting the mobile provider to ask about deactivating it using its IMEI. A phone’s IMEI is its equipment identifier; it is not a location method. Keep account recovery details and any information needed to identify the device accessible somewhere other than the missing phone.

Privacy and the screen-lock requirement

Google says Find Hub network locations are encrypted end to end with a unique key that the owner can access through the Android device’s PIN, pattern, or password. That is why a screen lock matters: Google says users need one to receive help from the network finding their own items. A PIN, pattern, or password is therefore part of preparing for network-based recovery, not merely a convenience for unlocking the phone.

Encryption should not be described as meaning no information is processed. Google says it processes temporary device identifiers, timestamps for detections and location requests, and information about paired or shared Fast Pair accessories. Google also says it cannot identify the user when their Android device shares a detected item’s location. A person searching for an item receives the detected location and approximate last-seen time.

Prepare your phone before it goes missing

  1. Add a Google Account and confirm Find Hub is enabled. Check the phone’s Find Hub settings while you still have it, and confirm it is allowed to locate the device.
  2. Set a screen lock. Use a PIN, pattern, or password if you want to receive the network’s help finding your own items.
  3. Choose an offline-finding mode. Decide whether you want only an encrypted recent location, network assistance in busy places, or network assistance that can apply in busy and remote areas.
  4. Keep Bluetooth and Location on if your supported phone offers post-shutdown finding. Google requires both to have been on when the phone shut down; the feature applies only to supported models.
  5. Check Google Play visibility. Google lists device visibility on Google Play as a requirement for remote lock or erase. This is distinct from whether an offline location might be available.
  6. Plan how you will sign in without the phone. Keep two-step-verification backup codes available in a secure place, and know how to open Find Hub from another Android device or a browser.

Set expectations before an emergency: an offline map point can help narrow a search, but it cannot promise a live position, and remote security actions have their own connectivity requirements.
