Android does not normally turn a connected gamepad into a system mouse. A gamepad sends button presses and joystick-axis input; a controller feature, app, or platform integration must translate that input into pointer movement, clicks, or touchscreen gestures. The exact behavior depends on the controller and the software involved.

What happens when Android receives gamepad input?

Android reports controller buttons and joystick axes as gamepad or joystick input, not automatically as mouse events. In its game-development guide, Google explains that controller button presses are reported like keyboard button presses and describes how games can handle joystick and D-pad input: Handle controller actions.

The Android input APIs distinguish SOURCE_GAMEPAD and SOURCE_JOYSTICK from SOURCE_MOUSE. A joystick axis is a normalized value from -1.0 to 1.0, with 0 at the center; by itself, that value is neither a screen position nor a mouse movement distance. See the InputDevice API and MotionEvent API.

When a cursor appears, there is a second step: something interprets controller input and generates pointer movement, a click, or a touch gesture. That translation may be built into a controller mode, supplied by software, or provided by a specific platform integration. It is not a universal Android behavior.

Why compatibility does not guarantee mouse control

Android’s compatibility requirements specify how compatible implementations map certain HID game-controller events to Android input constants. Those requirements define controller input compatibility; they do not require Android to treat every joystick as a mouse. The Android 15 Compatibility Definition therefore does not establish that a standard gamepad will move the system cursor.

A game can use controller axes to move a character or navigate its own menus without producing any pointer movement elsewhere. Likewise, a controller working in a game does not prove that it has system-wide mouse emulation.

Where gamepad-to-cursor conversion can happen

Controller firmware or a dedicated mode

Some controllers include a mode that changes what their sticks and buttons do. For example, a Bluetooth VR gamepad manual hosted by Ingram Micro describes a particular Android mouse mode: pressing its M control changes joystick function, Select acts as left/confirm, and pressing M again returns to music mode. In that mode, the manual says the stick must be moved while holding the confirm control. These instructions apply to that device only; they do not establish a standard mapping for other controllers. The manual also does not establish whether the product is currently available.

An app or remapping layer

Software can interpret gamepad buttons or axes and produce another kind of input. Whether that output is a mouse pointer event, a touchscreen action, or an in-app control depends on the software and its permissions. A mapping that works inside one app may not control the Android interface or other apps.

A platform integration

A particular device or Android build may add its own behavior. Unless the device maker documents that feature for the specific model and software version, do not assume that a cursor seen on one device will appear on another.

Touch gestures are not the same as mouse events

An Android AccessibilityService can dispatch gestures to the touchscreen when it is configured with the required capability. Android describes these as gestures treated as if they were performed directly on the screen, and notes that system accessibility features can affect dispatch: AccessibilityService gesture dispatch.

That API offers one possible software implementation for touch actions, but it does not turn a controller into a native mouse or provide a general gamepad-to-cursor setting. Google’s separate Autoclick (dwell timing) feature applies to an attached mouse: it can act after the cursor stops for a chosen delay. It explains what can happen after mouse movement exists, not how a gamepad creates it.

What Android’s controller settings can change

Google’s Android Help describes connecting a controller using a compatible wired cable or Bluetooth, and adjusting certain button and joystick assignments. The available menu paths depend on whether the connection is wired or wireless. The page does not say these settings enable cursor control: Set up your game controller settings on Android.

Changing a button layout or swapping the left and right sticks may help a game respond the way you expect. It should not be treated as evidence that Android has enabled mouse mode.

How to check why your controller is not moving a cursor

  1. Identify the expected behavior. Is the cursor meant to work across Android, in one app, or only in a game? In-app controls are not necessarily pointer events.
  2. Check the controller’s exact model and manual. Look for a dedicated mouse, pointer, or mode function, including how to enter and exit it and which button performs a click. Do not assume another model uses the same controls.
  3. Check the device and software context. Note the Android device, Android version, connection type, and app. These details matter because controller modes and platform integrations can differ.
  4. Separate stick input from cursor input. If the stick works in a game but not elsewhere, it may be sending ordinary joystick-axis values that the game understands, rather than mouse movement.
  5. Review Android’s controller settings for layout changes. Use Google’s wired or wireless setup guidance for the applicable path, but do not expect button or joystick reassignment alone to create a cursor.

How to evaluate a claimed gamepad mouse mode

Before relying on a controller or software feature, establish where conversion happens and what it produces. Check the scope and controls as well as basic compatibility:

  • Conversion layer: controller firmware or mode, an app or remapping layer, or a device-specific integration.
  • Output: mouse pointer events, touchscreen taps or gestures, or controls interpreted only inside an app or game.
  • Scope: system-wide operation or support limited to a particular app.
  • Controls: which stick moves the pointer, which button clicks, how to enable and exit the mode, and whether sensitivity or dead zones can be adjusted.
  • Compatibility evidence: confirmation for the exact controller model, Android device and version, and app context—not just a claim that the controller is Android-compatible.
