Microsoft Phone Link, paired with Link to Windows, can expose Android messages, call details, recent photos, notifications and, on supported phones, Android apps on a Windows PC. What the PC can show depends on your phone model, Windows and Android versions, Microsoft-account setup and the permissions you grant.
Microsoft’s disclosures distinguish between information temporarily stored on the Windows device and an optional feature that synchronizes contacts to Microsoft’s cloud. They do not provide a complete technical map of encryption, every network route or server-side retention for every content type. Treat the following as Microsoft’s stated product behavior, not an independent privacy audit and not a conclusion about every phone-linking app.
What a phone-linking app actually exposes
Phone Link is a Windows interface for selected Android capabilities. After pairing, it may display or relay:
- Text-message content and the sender or recipient information associated with those messages.
- Call history details, with permissions that allow the PC to read call logs and place calls.
- A limited set of recent photos that you can copy, share, edit, save or delete from Windows.
- Android notifications, which can be read, dismissed or acted on from the PC.
- Android apps and recent-app activity through app mirroring on supported devices.
- Files and clipboard content when those optional features are enabled.
Availability is not uniform. Microsoft says some capabilities are restricted to select devices, and the Google Play listing identifies certain calling, app, file-transfer and copy-and-paste functions as limited to select Microsoft Duo, Samsung and HONOR phones. A permission that exists on one handset may be absent or behave differently on another.

Where each category of data goes
The most useful privacy distinction is whether Microsoft describes the information as temporarily held on the paired PC or synchronized to an online account. The categories do not all follow the same documented path.

Messages and calls: temporary does not mean invisible
Microsoft says Phone Link accesses Android text-message content and the sender or recipient information attached to those messages. The Windows device temporarily stores messages, and the app shows only the last 30 days. That limit is a visibility window in Phone Link; it is not a promise that every underlying copy is erased everywhere after 30 days.
Call handling is similar but needs broader permissions. Call-log access is required to display details, and permission to make calls from the PC is required for PC-based calling. Microsoft says call details are temporarily stored on the Windows device and that only calls received or dialed in the previous 30 days are visible in the app.

If message access is enabled, one-time passwords, account-recovery codes, health information and private conversations that arrive by SMS can appear on a shared or unlocked computer. Microsoft specifically warns during setup that messages, including two-factor-authentication SMS, may be visible on the PC.
Reduce exposure before pairing
- Use a Windows sign-in method that locks the computer when you step away.
- Pair only with a personal or otherwise trusted Windows profile.
- Enable message and call permissions only if you need those features.
- Turn off message previews or notification access if people nearby could read the screen.
- Unpair the phone from a computer you no longer control.
Photos, notifications and app mirroring
Photos
Phone Link can provide a limited number of recent Android photos for actions such as copying, sharing, editing, saving or deleting. Microsoft describes these photos as temporarily stored on the PC but does not publish a corresponding number of days in the cited privacy disclosure. Do not assume the 30-day message and call window also applies to photos.

Notifications
After notification access is granted, Windows can read notifications and let you dismiss or act on them. Notifications can contain message previews, financial alerts, two-factor codes or workplace information even when you did not intend to open the underlying app. Android’s notification-access control is therefore a separate privacy decision from the permissions for messages or calls.
Mirrored Android apps
On supported devices, app mirroring lets you operate Android apps from Windows. Microsoft says it collects a list of installed Android apps and recent activity so Phone Link can provide the feature and display recently used apps. It says it does not retain further information for that purpose. That is a product disclosure, not an independent audit of the mirrored app’s own data practices; the Android app can still send data to its own provider under its own policy.

Contacts sync is optional and has a different documented destination from messages and call details. When you enable it, Microsoft says Android contacts are synchronized to Microsoft’s cloud, stored online and associated with your Microsoft account. The association allows access through other Microsoft products and services.
If you only want to read messages or notifications on one PC, review the Contacts sync switch separately and leave it off unless cloud availability is useful to you. Turning off contacts sync avoids this particular account-linked copy, but it does not automatically revoke message, call, photo or notification permissions; those controls must be changed independently.
Permissions: grant the smallest useful set
Pairing begins on the PC and uses the same Microsoft account on both devices. During setup, Link to Windows may request additional Android permissions so content can be accessed on Windows. The exact prompts vary by handset and feature set, but the practical mapping is straightforward:

- Messages: permits reading SMS content and related sender or recipient information.
- Phone and call log: supports call history and calling from the PC.
- Photos or media: supports the recent-photo feature and transfers.
- Notifications: permits Windows to read, dismiss or act on Android notifications.
- Contacts: is relevant when Contacts sync is enabled; review the separate sync choice before accepting it.
- Location: can support Windows location features when Link to Windows is allowed to use it.
- Accessibility service: the Google Play listing describes an accessibility service for people using a screen reader on the PC, enabling keyboard navigation and spoken feedback.
Android lets you review or revoke these permissions in the Link to Windows app’s settings. Revoking one normally disables the corresponding feature rather than ending the entire pairing, so you can keep only the capabilities you use.

Microsoft says Link to Windows may use GPS coordinates and Wi-Fi or cell-tower beacon data for Windows location features. Its support documentation says this location data is de-identified before upload, is not associated with the Link to Windows account, and is not sold or shared with advertisers or third parties. Those are Microsoft’s stated safeguards; the public pages do not provide an independent verification or a complete technical description of every location-data transfer.
Location is a controllable Android permission. If you do not need Windows location features, review the permission in Android settings and disable it. Doing so may remove location-dependent behavior while leaving unrelated Phone Link functions available.
Clipboard sharing and mobile-data use
Cross-device copy and paste exchanges clipboard data between the PC and phone. Microsoft says the feature can use mobile data when mobile-data syncing is allowed and the devices are not on Wi-Fi. A copied password, customer record or private note can therefore leave the local Wi-Fi path under that setting.
On Windows, open Phone Link settings and find the control for cross-device copy and paste. Disable the feature if you do not need it, or turn off syncing over mobile data so clipboard exchange is limited to Wi-Fi. Check the Android side as well if your device exposes a separate mobile-data or background-data control.

Setup requirements and feature variation
Microsoft’s general Android setup guidance specifies:
- Windows 10 with the October 2022 update or later, or Windows 11.
- Android 10 or later.
- Both devices connected to the same Wi-Fi network for pairing and normal operation.
- The same Microsoft account signed in on the phone and PC.
- Additional Android permissions for whichever features you choose.
These requirements are a baseline, not a guarantee that every feature will appear. Microsoft maintains lists of supported device models, and capabilities such as app mirroring, calling, instant hotspot and cross-device copy and paste can be limited by manufacturer, region, software version or account configuration.
Instant Hotspot
On supported Android devices, Link to Windows can share mobile-hotspot information with the paired PC over Bluetooth so the PC can connect to the internet. This is a connectivity feature, but it still involves exchanging hotspot information between devices. Disable it if you do not want the PC to use the phone’s mobile connection.

The Google Play listing advertises calls, notifications, messages, photos, apps, file transfer and copy/paste. It also displays a developer-provided “No data shared with third parties” data-safety declaration. That declaration is a marketplace statement, not proof that no information ever leaves the devices and not a replacement for Microsoft’s product privacy disclosure.

The same listing describes the accessibility service as intended for screen-reader users on the PC and says no personal or sensitive data is collected through that accessibility service. This statement applies to that disclosed service; it should not be expanded into a claim about every Phone Link feature or every mirrored Android app.

What Microsoft does not establish in these disclosures
The reviewed Microsoft pages do not provide a complete, per-content account of encryption, all in-transit routes or server-side retention. They also do not establish that every category follows one common storage model. Consequently:
- Do not assume all content stays only on the phone and PC.
- Do not assume every transfer is end-to-end encrypted based on these pages alone.
- Do not apply the 30-day message and call window to photos, notifications, contacts or clipboard data.
- Do not treat Phone Link’s disclosures as a privacy comparison of other Android-to-Windows linking products.
For a high-risk environment, consult your organization’s device-management rules and Microsoft’s current privacy statement, then test the exact permissions and features on the phone model you intend to pair.
A practical privacy checklist
- Confirm that your PC meets Microsoft’s Windows and Wi-Fi requirements and that your Android phone is supported.
- Pair from the PC using the same Microsoft account on both devices.
- Read every Android permission prompt and enable only the features you actually need.
- Decide separately whether Contacts sync should copy contacts into Microsoft’s cloud.
- Review notification previews so sensitive content is not exposed on the Windows lock screen or desktop.
- Check Phone Link settings for cross-device copy and paste; disable mobile-data syncing if Wi-Fi-only exchange is preferred.
- Review Android location permission and leave it off if Windows location features are unnecessary.
- Lock the PC, remove old pairings and revoke Android permissions when the relationship is no longer trusted.
- Recheck Microsoft’s requirements page and the app listing after major Windows, Android or Phone Link updates because labels, supported models and availability can change.
How to judge another phone-linking app
Phone Link is the best-documented example here, but its practices should not be generalized to every product. For any alternative, ask five concrete questions before pairing:

- Which Android and Windows permissions are mandatory for each feature?
- Which devices, operating-system versions and regions are supported?
- Does the provider describe temporary local storage, account-linked cloud synchronization or both?
- Can transfers use mobile data, and where is that setting controlled?
Require a specific answer for each data type. A broad “private” or “secure” label does not tell you whether contacts are uploaded, whether notifications are cached or whether a copied item can use cellular data.
Version and freshness notes
Device lists, settings labels, app versions and marketplace data-safety disclosures are volatile. Microsoft’s July 24, 2025 Windows Insider announcement described a refreshed Link to Windows experience as an Insider preview with preview build and app-version requirements. That announcement documents a preview at that date; it is not evidence of current general availability or today’s minimum versions.
Before relying on an exact compatibility claim, check Microsoft’s current Phone Link requirements and the current Google Play listing for your region and handset. The privacy distinctions above remain useful, but the controls and supported features may move as Windows and Android releases change.
