Android Auto is phone-based. It projects a compatible Android phone’s driving interface onto a compatible car or stereo display, where Google Maps can provide turn-by-turn navigation, voice guidance, estimated arrival times, live traffic information, and lane guidance. The phone, vehicle display, connection method, and data service all have to meet Google’s requirements.

Wired Android Auto starts when you connect the phone to the car with a suitable USB cable. Wireless Android Auto begins with Bluetooth pairing and also requires compatible wireless hardware, Wi-Fi support, and Location Services during setup. The car must be in Park before you type a destination on its screen.

What Android Auto actually does

Android Auto is a technology built into the phone for connecting that phone to a car display. Google describes it as “built into the phone as a technology that enables your phone to connect to your car display.” You do not normally install a separate Android Auto app from the Play Store.

Once connected, Android Auto presents compatible apps in a driving-focused interface on the vehicle’s infotainment screen. The phone remains the source of the Android Auto experience, while the car screen, speakers, microphone, and controls provide the in-vehicle interface. Google Maps is one supported navigation app; another compatible navigation app may also be available.

  • [Versatile One-for-All Functionality] A single solution for your high-speed ecosystem. Seamlessly connects the latest iPhone 18 Pro Max Duo/17/16, Samsung Galaxy S26/S25/S24 Ultra, PS5/PS4 controllers, and external SSDs to USB-A ports

The three components

  • Your phone: supplies Android Auto, the compatible apps, location information, and the data connection.
  • Your car or stereo: must specifically support Android Auto. A USB port alone does not prove that the vehicle supports it.
  • The connection: is either a USB cable for wired use or Bluetooth-led wireless setup when both the phone and vehicle support wireless projection.

Vehicle compatibility is model-specific. Google directs owners to check the vehicle or stereo maker’s compatibility information rather than assuming that a newer phone or any USB-equipped dashboard will work.

Requirements before you connect

Phone and service requirements

  • For Google’s listed wired requirements, the phone must run Android 9.0 or later.
  • Google lists an active mobile data plan as an Android Auto requirement.
  • Wireless projection requires a compatible phone with an active data plan and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support. Google’s current help text says wireless projection is compatible with any phone running Android 11.0, subject to vehicle, regional, and hardware compatibility.
  • Wireless use has additional 5 GHz Wi-Fi regulatory requirements in the European Union.

Because phone software, supported languages, countries, and vehicle systems change, confirm the current requirements for your exact phone and car with their manufacturers.

Vehicle and cable requirements

  • The car or aftermarket stereo must support Android Auto, not merely smartphone charging.
  • For wired use, use a high-quality USB cable and make sure its connector matches both the phone and the vehicle port.
  • For wireless use, the car or stereo must contain the hardware needed for wireless Android Auto; a vehicle that supports only wired projection cannot be made wireless by changing a phone setting.

What “data plan” means here

Google lists an active data plan as a requirement, but its help material does not establish that every Maps function always stops working without an internet connection. Live traffic and other online services depend on current connectivity, while the exact behavior of offline Maps data in Android Auto is not defined by the reviewed Android Auto documentation. Treat offline operation as a feature to verify for your phone, app version, and region rather than a universal guarantee.

  1. Put the car in Park. Turn on the infotainment system and leave the vehicle stationary while completing setup.
  2. Unlock and prepare the phone. Confirm that it meets the Android and data-plan requirements, then accept any phone permissions or setup prompts that appear.
  3. Connect the cable. Plug a high-quality USB cable into the vehicle’s Android Auto-capable USB port and the phone. A charging-only port or cable will not provide Android Auto projection.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions. Approve the requested connection and app permissions on the phone and car display.
  5. Open the app launcher on the car screen. Android Auto should show compatible apps, including Google Maps when it is available on the phone and supported in the region.
  6. Test navigation while parked. Open Maps, choose a destination, and verify that directions appear on the car screen and that spoken guidance comes through the vehicle audio.

If the display charges the phone but never offers Android Auto, check that you used the vehicle’s compatible USB port, that the cable supports data, and that the specific vehicle model is listed as compatible. A USB socket by itself is not evidence of Android Auto support.

Set up wireless Android Auto

Wireless setup uses Bluetooth for the initial relationship between the phone and car, then relies on the wireless capabilities supported by both devices. Keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services turned on during first-time setup.

  1. Park the car and switch on its infotainment system. Do not attempt to type a destination while moving.
  2. Enable Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on the phone. These settings help the car discover and establish the wireless Android Auto connection.
  3. Start Bluetooth pairing from the car and phone. Select the vehicle in the phone’s Bluetooth settings or follow the pairing prompt shown by the infotainment system.
  4. Accept the Android Auto prompts. Approve the connection and permissions requested on both screens.
  5. Wait for Android Auto to launch. After pairing, the car should offer the Android Auto interface without a USB cable when the compatible devices are together.
  6. Open the launcher and Maps. Confirm that the navigation interface, voice output, and vehicle controls respond as expected.

If wireless setup fails, verify that the car supports wireless Android Auto rather than only wired projection, that the phone meets the wireless Android version and 5 GHz requirements, and that Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services remain enabled during pairing. Consult the vehicle manual for the manufacturer’s exact menu names.

Choose a destination

Maps can accept a destination through several routes:

  • Search for a place or address.
  • Choose a recent destination.
  • Browse available categories.
  • Select a saved place.
  • Use a voice command instead of typing.

Google requires the car to be in Park before you type a destination on the car screen. Voice input can be used when appropriate, but keep your attention on driving and follow local laws governing in-car interaction.

What appears during a trip

Google lists voice-guided directions, estimated arrival times, live traffic information, and lane guidance among the Maps features available through Android Auto. The vehicle display provides the visual route while the car’s speakers can deliver spoken instructions. Availability can vary by country, device, app version, and connection.

Changing navigation apps

Google Maps is not the only possible navigation option. Android Auto can present another compatible navigation app in the launcher. The car display shows only apps that meet Android Auto’s compatibility and safety requirements; a phone app that works normally outside the car may not be offered on the dashboard.

Voice commands and the Gemini transition

Voice control lets you request navigation without typing on the car screen. Google’s current help text says Gemini is replacing Google Assistant on most mobile devices and can understand the same commands using more natural speech. Google describes the transition as ongoing in 2026.

Do not assume that every driver will see the same assistant. Rollout timing, language, account configuration, device model, and territory can affect whether Gemini or Google Assistant handles a request. If a familiar command is not recognized, try a plain-language request such as asking for directions to a named place, and check which assistant is active on the phone.

Wired versus wireless: which connection fits?

Android Auto is not Google built-in

These names describe different architectures. Android Auto connects a phone to the car display. Cars with Google built-in run Google apps and services in the vehicle itself, without using Android Auto as the projection layer.

Instructions or feature descriptions written for Google built-in should not be treated as Android Auto instructions. Menus, supported apps, account behavior, updates, and data controls can differ because one system is phone-based and the other is integrated into the vehicle.

Privacy: interpret the documentation correctly

Google’s privacy documentation for Google built-in discusses trip and sensor data collected in that separate product. Examples include GPS location, navigation details, road descriptions, and some vehicle or device sensor information, along with related controls.

Those statements do not establish the same collection practices or controls for phone-based Android Auto. For Android Auto, review the permissions and account settings on the phone, the vehicle maker’s information, and the policies for the individual apps you use. Do not infer Android Auto behavior from a Google built-in privacy page.

Troubleshoot the most common setup failures

The car does not show Android Auto

  • Confirm that the exact vehicle or stereo model supports Android Auto; a USB port is not enough.
  • For wired use, try the vehicle’s designated Android Auto USB port and a high-quality data cable with the correct connectors.
  • For wireless use, confirm that the car supports wireless projection, not just wired Android Auto.
  • Check the phone’s Android version, active data plan, and (for wireless) 5 GHz Wi-Fi capability.

Wireless pairing will not complete

  • Turn on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services before starting setup.
  • Begin pairing from both the phone and the vehicle’s Bluetooth menus, then accept prompts on both screens.
  • Use the vehicle manual for model-specific pairing steps and compatibility limitations.

Maps opens but destination entry is unavailable

Put the car in Park. Google specifically restricts typing a destination on the car screen until the vehicle is parked. You can use an available voice command or prepare a destination before driving, provided that doing so complies with local law and safe-driving practice.

Traffic or other online information is missing

Google lists an active data plan as an Android Auto requirement and describes live traffic as a Maps feature, so check the phone’s service and connection first. The Android Auto material does not promise identical offline behavior in every region; verify the capability for your particular setup rather than assuming that all Maps functions are available without data.

A quick pre-drive checklist

  • Phone runs a supported Android version.
  • Phone has an active data plan.
  • Vehicle or stereo model is confirmed compatible.
  • For wired use, the cable supports data and fits both connectors.
  • For wireless use, the phone and car support wireless Android Auto and 5 GHz Wi-Fi where required.
  • Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services are enabled for first wireless setup.
  • Maps appears in the Android Auto launcher.
  • The vehicle is in Park whenever you need to type on the car display.
