Android Auto lets compatible music and podcast apps on your phone play through your car’s speakers, with playback controls on the vehicle display. It connects by USB or, if both your phone and car support it, wirelessly. Your phone supplies the apps and content; Android Auto provides the in-car interface.
How does music playback work in Android Auto?
Android Auto presents compatible media apps from your phone on the car display and routes their audio through the vehicle speakers. Sign in to the music or podcast app on your phone before connecting. Depending on the service, you may also need a subscription or premium account. Google lists examples including Spotify, Amazon Music, Pandora, YouTube Music and podcast apps; availability and features can vary. Google’s Android Auto media guidance explains app controls and voice playback.
Start playback by voice or on the display
You can request a song, playlist, station or podcast using “Hey Google” or the microphone button, if voice assistance is available to you. Google’s examples include “Play my playlist on Spotify,” “Play [song name] on Amazon Music,” “Play house music on Pandora,” “Play [artist] on YouTube Music” and “Play [podcast name].” You can also open the app launcher on the car display and choose a media app. The recent-apps area can take you back to the last media app you used.

What do you need to connect Android Auto?
Both the phone and the car or stereo must support the connection method you want. A USB port alone does not prove that a vehicle supports Android Auto. Check the exact vehicle or receiver model with its manufacturer, and confirm that Android Auto is enabled in the infotainment system. Google’s compatibility and setup requirements distinguish wired and wireless projection.
| Connection method | Phone requirements | Other requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Wired | Android 9.0 (Pie) or higher and an active data plan | Compatible car or stereo; high-quality USB cable that fits the phone and vehicle |
| Wireless | Compatible phone, active data plan and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support. Google lists Android 11.0 phones as compatible with wireless projection. | Compatible car or stereo with wireless Android Auto support |
These are Google’s listed requirements, not a guarantee that every phone and vehicle combination will work. Android Auto is unavailable on Android (Go edition) devices. Google also lists supported countries; most features may not work outside them. Its requirements page describes an additional EU regulatory condition for in-car 5 GHz Wi-Fi and says Pixel 3 and newer comply. If compatibility is uncertain, check with the phone and vehicle manufacturers.

How to set up Android Auto with a USB cable
- Park the car. Complete setup while parked, not while driving.

- Connect the phone. Use a high-quality USB cable to connect the phone to the vehicle’s USB port.
- Follow the prompts. Respond to the instructions on the phone and car display to complete setup.
You do not need to install a separate Android Auto app from the Play Store for the car-display experience; Google describes the technology as integrated into the phone. Google’s setup instructions cover the connection prompts.
How to connect Android Auto wirelessly
- Park and prepare. Make sure the phone and car support wireless Android Auto. Turn on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services on the phone.
- Pair the phone and car. Use Bluetooth to make the initial connection, following the prompts on both screens.
- Open Android Auto in the car. It should start within a few seconds after pairing; if it does not, select Android Auto on the vehicle display.
Wireless Android Auto uses the phone’s and car’s supported capabilities; Google’s requirements do not establish a universal need for an adapter. Google’s connection instructions explain first-time setup.

What to check if Android Auto will not connect
For an unreliable wired connection
- Verify that the vehicle supports wired Android Auto and that the feature is enabled in its infotainment system.
- Use a high-quality cable shorter than 1 metre (3 feet), without a USB hub or extension. Google suggests trying the cable supplied with the phone and also references USB-IF-certified cables.
- Check that the cable matches the phone connector and vehicle port. Google says replacing the cable will likely resolve a connection that used to work but has stopped.
- If you have an aftermarket receiver, check its manufacturer’s site for firmware updates.
These are Google’s recommendations for connection problems; see its USB connection troubleshooting guidance. A cable can help with a supported wired connection, but it cannot add Android Auto to a vehicle that does not support it.
If wireless setup fails
- Recheck that both the phone and the exact car or stereo support wireless Android Auto.
- During initial setup, keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services on and complete the Bluetooth pairing prompts.
- After pairing, try selecting Android Auto on the car display if it does not launch automatically.
- Check the vehicle and phone manufacturers’ compatibility guidance if the combination still will not connect.
How to choose between wired and wireless playback
The right option depends on what your exact devices support and how you prefer to connect. Compare these points before setup:
- Vehicle support: Does the car or receiver support wired Android Auto, wireless Android Auto, or both?
- Phone support: Does the phone meet the requirements for the connection method, including Android version and 5 GHz Wi-Fi for wireless projection?
- Convenience: Would you rather connect with a cable or use wireless projection?
- Wired reliability: Is the cable short, high quality, and a good match for the phone and car ports?
- Media app fit: Does the app work with Android Auto, have the music or podcasts you want, and meet your account or subscription needs? Voice controls can also depend on language and regional availability.
Google’s help pages do not rank music services overall, so choose based on the app compatibility and features available to you.
