Android Auto does not scan your phone and automatically present every audio file. It displays media through compatible Android Auto apps. To play music saved locally, install a player that can read those files and supports Android Auto, open and sign in to it on your phone if required, connect Android Auto, then select that app on the car screen or make a voice request.
What actually finds your local music
Android Auto is the car-facing interface, not a general-purpose file browser. The media app on your phone supplies the library, playback controls and, where supported, playlists, albums and folders. Google’s Android Auto guidance states: “To use media apps in your car, your apps must be compatible with Android Auto.” Installing an arbitrary audio player is therefore not enough; the player must expose an Android Auto-compatible interface.
The same distinction explains why two phones containing identical MP3 files can behave differently. One player may index and display its local library in Android Auto, while another may play the files on the phone but have no car-screen integration. Local-library indexing, folder browsing, offline behavior and voice matching are app-specific. Google’s general instructions do not promise any of those features for every player.
Android Auto can connect by USB or wirelessly. The connection carries the compatible app’s interface to the vehicle; it does not change which files the app can read. A cable is required only for the wired setup, not for wireless playback.

Before connecting: make the phone and app ready
1. Confirm the files are really available to an audio player
Check that the tracks are stored on the Android phone and can be opened by a music player. Android Auto cannot browse arbitrary folders by itself. If the files are on removable or cloud-only storage, whether they appear depends on the player’s storage support and whether the files are available offline. Do not assume that a filename will become searchable from the car display.
2. Choose a player with the right capabilities
Look for a current Android app that explicitly supports Android Auto and can access the type of files you own. Before relying on it for a trip, verify these points in the app’s own documentation or listing:
- Android Auto compatibility, rather than phone-only playback
- Access to your local audio formats and storage location
- Library organization by artist, album, playlist or folder, if those views matter to you
- Offline playback after the phone loses mobile data
- How its Android Auto interface handles search and voice requests
- Whether it requires an account, subscription or a first-run setup
Google advises checking with the app developer for app-specific information and troubleshooting. Compatibility can change when either Android Auto or the player is updated, so treat the current developer documentation as authoritative.

Launch the chosen player on the phone before starting Android Auto. If it requires an account, sign in on the phone first. Google’s instruction is explicit: “To use any app, make sure you’re signed into that app on your phone before you start Android Auto.” This also gives the app an opportunity to finish importing or indexing files before you drive.

Connect Android Auto
Wired setup
- Start the vehicle and unlock the phone.
- Connect the phone to the vehicle’s Android Auto-capable USB port.
- Accept the prompts on the phone and car display, then complete any requested permissions or setup.
- Wait for the Android Auto launcher to appear before trying to open the music app.
For a wired connection that is unreliable or has stopped working, Google recommends a high-quality USB cable shorter than 3 feet (1 meter). That is connection troubleshooting advice, not a requirement for local music files. If a previously reliable connection fails, replacing the cable is one of Google’s suggested checks.
Wireless setup
- Confirm that the phone and vehicle support wireless Android Auto; support varies by phone, car, region and configuration.
- For the first connection, pair the phone and car using Bluetooth.
- During setup, leave Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services enabled as Google recommends.
- Follow the pairing and Android Auto prompts on both screens.
- After the initial pairing, allow the wireless connection to start when the vehicle is switched on, if your car offers that option.
Wireless Android Auto avoids plugging in, but it is not a different music library. The same compatible media app and the same local-file limitations apply.
Open the music app on the car screen
- On the Android Auto display, open the app launcher.
- Select the compatible media app you prepared on the phone.
- Browse the categories that the app exposes, such as playlists, albums, artists or folders.
- Choose a track and use the car’s playback controls. Keep browsing and interaction to times when it is safe and legal to do so.
Recently used apps may also appear as a shortcut, but the documented place to choose an app is the car display’s app launcher. If the player opens but has no local-library section, that is normally an app capability or indexing issue rather than Android Auto hiding a universal phone library.
Use voice control without assuming filename search
You can use the microphone button on the Android Auto screen or the steering-wheel voice-control button, depending on the vehicle. Google’s examples use an app name: “Play my playlist on Spotify” and “Play [artist] on YouTube Music.” A general pattern is “Play [artist, album or playlist] on [app].”

Voice results depend on the selected app, its Android Auto support and the assistant’s current rollout. Google describes Gemini as replacing Google Assistant on most mobile devices, but availability and behavior can change. A voice command that works for a streaming catalog does not prove that the assistant can identify a locally saved file by its filename. If a local track is not found, open the app and browse its library instead.
Why local music does not appear
The app is missing from the launcher
- The player may not support Android Auto.
- It may be installed on the phone but not enabled or available to the current Android Auto configuration.
- The app may need to be opened or signed in on the phone first.
- The vehicle or phone may be using a configuration that does not support that app interface.
Confirm that the app is current, open it on the phone, sign in if necessary, reconnect Android Auto and check the launcher again. If it still does not appear, consult the player’s current Android Auto documentation or contact its developer. Do not infer compatibility merely because the app can play local files on the handset.
The app appears, but the library is empty
- Check that the files are stored locally and playable in the phone app itself.
- Look for an import, scan or library-refresh command inside the player.
- Review any storage-access request the app presents and its documented supported locations or formats.
- Keep the app open long enough to finish indexing before connecting again.
These controls differ by app, so there is no universal Android Auto setting that forces every player to rescan the phone.

Playback works on the phone but not in Android Auto
Phone playback alone proves only that the player can decode the file. It does not prove that the player supplies an Android Auto interface. Check the developer’s compatibility statement and whether the app exposes a car-safe media screen. If the app is compatible but the interface is incomplete, report the behavior to its developer rather than installing unrelated file-browsing tools.

Wireless Android Auto will not connect
Recheck that the car and phone support wireless Android Auto, then verify Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services during setup. Remove and repeat the initial Bluetooth pairing if the car no longer appears. Because wireless requirements vary by vehicle and region, use the vehicle maker’s and Google’s current setup instructions for the exact combination.
Wired Android Auto disconnects
Try a different high-quality USB cable shorter than 3 feet (1 meter), reconnect to the vehicle’s Android Auto-capable port and repeat the on-screen setup. Cable replacement addresses the connection path; it will not make an incompatible player expose a local library.
Compatible app playback versus ordinary Bluetooth audio
These are separate paths:

Use the Android Auto route when you want the app’s supported car interface, playlists and controls. Use ordinary Bluetooth when your vehicle supports it and you only need the phone’s audio output; expect different screen controls and metadata. Do not confuse a car with Google built-in with a conventional Android Auto head unit: they are related but distinct systems.
Wired or wireless: which is better for stored music?

Choose based on what the vehicle supports and whether cable reliability or cable-free convenience matters. Neither mode automatically indexes every audio file.

How to choose a local-player workflow
There is no universally validated player for every phone, car and file collection. Compare candidates using this checklist:
- Car integration: Is Android Auto support stated by the developer?
- File access: Can it read the storage location and formats you use?
- Organization: Does it expose the views you need, such as folders or playlists?
- Voice behavior: Does its Android Auto interface document voice search, or should you plan to browse manually?
- Offline use: Can it play without a data connection after indexing?
- Maintenance: Does the developer provide current Android Auto troubleshooting information?
Test the complete path while parked: open a known local track on the phone, connect Android Auto, launch the player, locate the track, pause and resume it from the car controls, then try the voice pattern supported by that app. This separates a file-access problem from an Android Auto-integration problem before you depend on it on the road.
What Android Auto does not guarantee
- It does not automatically scan all audio files on the phone.
- It does not make every installed audio player appear in the launcher.
- It does not guarantee folder browsing, local-library indexing or filename-based voice search.
- It does not require a USB cable when wireless Android Auto is supported.
- It does not give a Bluetooth setup documented for cars with Google built-in to every Android Auto head unit.
The dependable rule is simple: the phone’s compatible media app owns the local library; Android Auto presents whatever safe, supported interface that app provides.
