Android app shortcuts are quick links to specific actions or destinations inside an app. On a supported launcher, touch and hold an app icon to see any shortcuts the app offers; tap one to open the relevant task, such as composing a message or navigating to a place. The available shortcuts, gesture and number shown depend on the app and launcher.
What an Android app shortcut does
A shortcut is an entry point into an app, not a separate app. When you select one, Android starts the app with an instruction—an intent—that directs it to a particular action or destination. The shortcut might open a conversation, show a section of an app, or resume a task rather than simply opening the app’s usual starting screen. Android’s app shortcuts overview describes shortcuts as references to one or more intents.
What a shortcut can do is determined by the app that supplies it. Android documentation gives examples such as composing email, messaging a contact, navigating to a location, playing the next TV episode, or loading a saved game. Those are examples of possible actions, not features that every app must provide.

How to find and use shortcuts
- Find the app icon. Look for it on the home screen or in the launcher’s app list.
- Touch and hold the icon. On supported launchers, this opens a menu containing shortcuts the app has made available. The exact gesture and menu appearance can differ by launcher.
- Choose an action. Tap the shortcut you want. The app opens at the associated action or destination if it is available.
- Pin it if the option is offered and you want a separate icon. Follow the launcher’s prompt. Pinning a shortcut requires launcher support and, on Android 8.0 (API level 26) and later, user approval.
If holding an app icon does not show a shortcut menu, that alone does not indicate a problem with the phone. The app may not have shortcuts to show, or the launcher may expose them differently or not support the relevant behavior. Android’s documentation describes the long-press interaction for supported launchers, not a universal interface shared by every device.
Static, dynamic and pinned shortcuts
Android distinguishes shortcuts by who defines them and how their availability changes. Static and dynamic shortcuts can appear in an app-icon menu; a user can also pin a copy of either kind where the launcher supports pinning. A pinned shortcut is a launcher entry the user chose to keep, rather than a fourth kind of app action.

The key distinction is between a shortcut’s definition and where it appears. Static and dynamic describe how the app supplies an action; pinned describes a user’s choice to keep an entry in the launcher. Pinning is not automatic: if an app asks to pin a shortcut, the user receives a confirmation request and can decline it. Android’s shortcut creation guidance documents the confirmation step.

What appears in the long-press menu—and what does not
The menu opened from an app icon is launcher-provided. It may show static and dynamic shortcuts that are currently available for that app. A pinned shortcut instead has its own icon in the launcher; selecting it still takes you into an app action. The pinned icon is not an app widget, which is a different kind of home-screen element.
Not every shortcut appears on every Android surface. In particular, a shortcut visible in a launcher menu should not be assumed to appear automatically in Google Assistant or another Google surface. Android’s overview notes that some dynamic shortcuts published for launchers alone are not discoverable on other Google surfaces. Whether an action is available elsewhere depends on the app’s integrations and the surface in question.
How many shortcuts can appear?
There are two different limits to keep in mind: how many shortcuts an app can publish through the APIs, and how many a particular launcher displays. Android’s documentation describes up to 15 combined static and dynamic shortcuts as the API-supported maximum, while its best-practices guidance recommends publishing four distinct shortcuts. Separately, the overview says most supported launchers display up to four. These are not promises that every phone will show four entries or that every launcher displays the same amount.

For developers, the device-specific launcher maximum can be checked with getMaxShortcutCountPerActivity(). The value can vary by device, so an app should not treat a typical display count as a universal launcher rule. The API maximum and the visible launcher menu answer different questions: how many static and dynamic shortcuts may be published together, versus how many the launcher chooses to show. For users, a shortcut is simply a faster route into an app. For developers, the important design choice is whether the destination is stable, changes with context, or should be offered for a user to pin. In every case, the intent and the shortcut’s descriptive information shape what the launcher can present and where the selection leads.
Static shortcuts: define stable actions with the app
A static shortcut is declared in a resource packaged with the app. Android’s creation guide directs developers to identify the launcher activity that handles MAIN and LAUNCHER, reference the shortcuts resource through that activity’s manifest metadata, and define each shortcut’s details, including an intent and labels. This approach suits actions that make sense as a consistent part of the app rather than destinations that change from one user session to the next. Dynamic shortcuts: publish actions as context changes
Dynamic shortcuts are created and maintained at runtime by the app. That makes them suitable for destinations whose relevance changes, such as a recent conversation or current level in a game. The app can add, update or remove them as the context changes. Because the destination is app-managed, developers need to keep the shortcut’s target and label aligned with the action it currently represents.
Pinned shortcuts: ask the user, do not place them silently
An app can request that a shortcut be pinned after checking whether the default launcher supports pinning. The launcher presents the request to the user for confirmation; the app cannot treat the request as approval. Users may also pin copies of static or dynamic shortcuts. An app can update the contents of a pinned shortcut, while the user can remove the pinned launcher entry. Intents and task behavior matter
The intent is not decorative metadata: it determines the action or destination reached when the shortcut is selected. A shortcut can reference multiple intents, and Android documents task and back-stack behavior that differs between static and dynamic shortcuts. Developers should follow Android’s task and intent guidance for the shortcut type they implement rather than assuming every shortcut returns to the same screen or produces identical Back-navigation behavior.

Keep private information out of shortcut metadata
Shortcut titles and other metadata can be accessed by the launcher. Android warns developers not to put sensitive user information in that metadata. A label should identify the action clearly without exposing private details—for example, avoid putting confidential content into the text that a launcher may display.

- “I long-pressed the icon and saw nothing.” Shortcuts are optional app-provided actions, and launcher behavior varies. The absence of a menu does not establish that Android’s shortcut feature is broken.
- “A pinned shortcut is a copy of the app.” It is a separate launcher entry that directs into a specific app action or destination; it is not a second installation.
- “Every shortcut is a widget.” A pinned shortcut is an icon-style entry point, not a widget. The shortcut opens an app action rather than embedding the app’s interface on the home screen.
- “If it is in the launcher menu, it will be in Assistant.” That is not guaranteed. Launcher publication and availability on other Google surfaces are separate integration questions.
- “The published maximum is what my phone must display.” API capacity and launcher display are different limits, and device support can affect what is visible.
Choosing a shortcut as a user
Use a shortcut when you know the particular task or destination you want and the app offers a direct entry for it. A shortcut is most useful when it saves repeated navigation or keeps a specific destination one tap away. Leave an action in the app-icon menu if you only use it occasionally; consider pinning it when you want its own launcher icon and the option is available. Since apps control their static and dynamic offerings, users cannot assume they can create an arbitrary shortcut to any screen in any app.
