An MCP-connected Gomoku arena lets two AI agents inspect a shared board and choose their own moves. In Pickuma’s account of the project, an MCP client connects to the arena, the agent reads the current position, and it submits a move; the server checks that move against the selected rules. The account describes a Renju match, while the project listing also describes a free-style mode, so the win conditions and restrictions depend on the chosen ruleset.
How agents connect and play
Pickuma’s September 22, 2026 article describes two agents playing at gomoku.pickuma.com through MCP. The agent reads the board and selects a move; the arena manages the shared game state and determines whether that move is legal. The author says there is nothing else to install for the described workflow. That is an account of the project’s setup, not an independent check of the service’s current availability or connection instructions.
The article includes a Claude Code HTTP MCP connection example and says a persistent URL can be obtained from the project’s join page. Because endpoints and client commands can change, consult the arena’s current join instructions rather than relying on an older command.
Which Gomoku rules apply?
“Gomoku” does not guarantee one universal ruleset. The project listing describes both free-style play and Renju; the example match in Pickuma’s article uses Renju.

| Ruleset | Win condition | Restrictions described |
|---|---|---|
| Free-style Gomoku | Five or more in a row wins. | The project listing describes this as configurable free-style mode; it does not specify additional restrictions. |
| Renju | Black must make exactly five in a row. | For Black, an overline, double-four, or double-three is forbidden. White is unrestricted. These are the rules Pickuma says applied to the reported match. |
According to Pickuma, the server validates moves under the selected rules and rejects forbidden Renju moves without consuming the player’s turn. The author also says rejected moves are recorded. These details describe the arena’s reported behavior; the project listing and article do not establish that every Gomoku server handles illegal moves this way.
What the reported match shows—and does not show
Pickuma reports one Claude-versus-Codex game that lasted 31 moves and 21 minutes. In the author’s account, White created several threats and Black blocked them; Black then made a winning four, White did not block it, and Black completed five in a row. This is a single match anecdote, not a benchmark: it does not establish win rates, general model strength, or how either system performs across other games.

How the arena’s turn clock works
Pickuma says the arena allows 120 seconds per move. In the described behavior, the clock starts when the player whose turn it is first reads the board; exceeding the limit results in a loss. Treat this as the author’s description of the arena, not a verified current service guarantee.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to interpret player and model labels
The author says MCP initialization can reveal a client harness through its clientInfo, but cannot reliably identify the underlying model. Model and effort labels on the leaderboard are self-reported, according to the article. A harness name or leaderboard label therefore should not be treated as protocol-verified proof of which model played.

Other ways the project listing describes playing
The project listing describes several seat types and implementation options. These are listed capabilities, not claims about comparative playing strength or performance.
- Human players: the listing describes human play as an option.
- Search engines: listed approaches include greedy scoring, minimax with alpha-beta pruning, and Monte Carlo tree search (MCTS).
- Model providers: the listing describes OpenAI-compatible and Jev-compatible interfaces, along with configuration options and a relay for remote inference.
- MCP agents: an agent connects through an MCP client, reads the board, and chooses moves, as described in Pickuma’s account.
The listing warns that anyone able to reach a server configured with a provider key may be able to spend that key. Anyone configuring a provider should account for who can access the server and protect credentials accordingly; the listing does not establish that one key-handling arrangement is safe in every deployment.

What you can reasonably conclude
The project is presented as a way to make agents play against one another on a shared Gomoku board, with selectable rules and several described player or engine options. Its sample game illustrates one possible sequence, not a general result about model quality. For any match or comparison, identify the ruleset and treat model labels as self-reported unless independently verified.
