Signals From the Noise is both the name of an LED installation by artist and engineer Karyn Nakamura and the subject of a WIRED feature sponsored by T. Rowe Price. The artwork turns financial-market data into shifting visual patterns; the sponsor uses that transformation as a metaphor for how active portfolio managers decide which information deserves attention. The metaphor explains the feature’s idea, but it is not evidence of any ETF’s performance.
What “Signals From the Noise” refers to
The title is not a general technical guide to signal processing. It refers to Nakamura’s multimedia artwork and a sponsored feature about the work. In the piece, streams of financial-market data appear as visual noise before forming colored patterns. Nakamura also drew inspiration from structural color in insects and plants.
The WIRED feature says the installation was displayed on July 22 and 23, 2026, at the eastern end of the Shops at the Oculus inside Westfield World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan. It describes a mesh ring 10 feet tall and 37 feet in diameter, animated by individual LEDs. Those dimensions and event details are reported by the sponsored feature.
How the artwork connects to investing
T. Rowe Price commissioned the installation and frames it as an analogy: just as Nakamura turns data into visual patterns, active managers examine information and use their own frameworks and judgment to shape portfolios. The feature presents this as the sponsor’s perspective, not as an independent assessment of the investment approach.
Jodi Love, identified in the feature as a lead portfolio manager at T. Rowe Price, describes the challenge this way: “Most of it is just noise. The signal is finding what matters and what’s relevant after cutting away all the extraneous information.” She also emphasizes the role of discretion: “Judgment is crucial. Vantage point is crucial. But in the end, I have to make a call.”
Artist Karyn Nakamura makes a related point about the creative work involved in interpreting information: “There’s also a lot of creativity that goes into these processes that people have developed to filter, process, and analyze data.” In the feature, that comment bridges the artwork’s process and the managers’ account of their work; it does not establish that a particular investment decision is sound.

Rizzo describes the active-ETF idea as “curating a differentiated portfolio that’s built on insights from our own frameworks and creating something that’s unique in the marketplace.” That is a statement of the sponsor’s approach, not proof that a portfolio is in fact differentiated or will outperform.

What the feature does—and does not—tell an investor
The feature broadly contrasts passive index funds, which are designed to mirror a market or segment, with active ETFs, in which managers have discretion over portfolio construction. It does not provide a fund-by-fund comparison, benchmark analysis, expense ratios, holdings, or performance history. It therefore cannot answer whether any named ETF suits a particular investor or has delivered better results.
To assess a specific ETF, use current official fund materials and compare the relevant details on a like-for-like basis:

- Objective and strategy: What is the fund designed to do, and what discretion does its manager have?
- Holdings and benchmark: What does the fund own, and what benchmark—if any—is relevant to its stated objective?
- Costs and trading: Review the expense ratio and consider bid-ask spreads and any brokerage commissions.
- Risk and performance: Consider the fund’s stated risks and compare performance over matched periods, with appropriate benchmarks and context.
The sponsored feature’s disclosure says investments are subject to market risk, including possible loss of principal. ETF shares trade at market prices rather than net asset value; investors generally incur the bid-ask spread, and brokerage commissions may reduce returns. It advises readers to review a fund’s prospectus and its objectives, risks, charges, and expenses before investing.

Why the “signal” metaphor is not an investment result
Financial data can inform decisions, but a visually compelling account of filtering information does not show whether a strategy works. The WIRED feature supplies no named, independently sourced investment-performance statistic or study that would support a conclusion about returns, superiority, or risk-adjusted outcomes. Love captures the open-ended nature of the task in another quotation: “You never ‘solve’ the market—there’s no final answer.” The remark describes the managers’ perspective; it is not a performance measure.
