Ammo in first-person shooters is replenished through several distinct loops rather than one universal “drop” rule. Depending on the game and mode, you may collect weapon-specific rounds from the ground, loot a defeated player, open a container, buy supplies with cash, use a class ability, revisit a replenishing map spawner, or receive ammunition from a respawn or kill-triggered brick. The fastest way to resupply is to identify your weapon’s ammo category first, then choose the most reliable source available in that game.

What an ammo drop actually is

An ammo drop is any game-generated opportunity to restore ammunition after you have fired some or all of your reserve. “Drop” can mean a loose pickup on the floor, a magazine or shell supplied by a teammate, a brick created by a defeated enemy, a crate delivered from the sky, or a guaranteed grant attached to spawning. These systems are deliberately different because they shape movement, combat pacing, resource management and team strategy.

Most games combine several loops:

  • Typed loot: ground items, bins and containers hold a particular ammo family. Picking up an incompatible family does not refill the weapon you are carrying.
  • Enemy or player drops: defeating an opponent can create ammunition, a loot container or a personal brick.
  • Map spawners: fixed crates and item locations can refill after a timer or game event.
  • Deployables and class tools: a player or support class places a bag or box, often limited by a cooldown.
  • Purchases: a shop or station exchanges an in-match currency for equipment or loadout resources.
  • Spawn and reset grants: a respawn, round start or mode rule gives a defined amount without requiring a pickup.

The important distinction is reliability. A random container may contain ammo, while a class bag or resupply call-in is designed to provide it. A source can also be reliable but expensive: a Buy Station costs cash, and a cooldown-based box costs time and may expose your position.

Five questions that explain any FPS resupply system

What is the ammo taxonomy?

Some shooters classify ammunition by weapon family or color, such as Light, Heavy or Energy. Others use broad economy tiers such as Primary, Special and Heavy. A weapon can only use the category it was designed for, so the first check when a pickup appears to do nothing is whether the category matches.

  • Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
  • Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
  • Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.

How reliable is the source?

Ground loot and containers are uncertain. A known crate, a teammate’s bag, a purchase station or a documented spawn grant is more predictable. Reliability often increases the tactical cost: you must reach a location, spend currency, wait for a cooldown or win a fight.

Who receives the ammunition?

A pickup may affect only the player who touches it, the exact weapon in the current loadout, every weapon in that loadout, or nearby squad members. Read the mode’s description rather than assuming that a box is team-wide.

What causes it to reset?

Resources can be one-time pickups, cooldown items, kill-triggered bricks, respawn grants or map spawners that replenish. The reset rule determines whether controlling a location once is enough or whether you should return later.

How the major games differ

Game or mode Ammo model Most dependable resupply Cost or reset Typical scope
Apex Legends Weapon-specific families: Light, Heavy, Energy, Shotgun, Sniper, Mythic and Arrows Matching ground loot, Supply Bins and eliminated-player bins Loot pickup; exact quantities are mode- and patch-dependent Primarily the individual player
Battlefield REDSEC Shared within categories such as Assault Rifles, SMGs and LMGs Support Class Supply Bag or Ammo Resupply Call-In Class tool or special call-in; delivery and cooldown rules depend on the mode Bag supports the user’s weapon; call-in fills all weapons in the current loadout
Call of Duty: Warzone Looted ammunition and equipment tied to the items found Buy Station for cash-based equipment; Supply Boxes are opportunistic Cash purchase or one-time container opening Player, with team value depending on the purchased item
Call of Duty multiplayer Loadout ammunition plus equipment categories Supply Box Field Upgrade Recharges over time; the box explodes when shot User and teammates
Destiny 2 Primary, Special and Heavy/Power economy tiers Rally flags, world drops and documented Crucible bricks or crates Limited ammo is generated by activity rules, kills, stats, mods and modifiers Usually personal; Crucible bricks are personal
Halo Infinite Weapon-linked map pickups and crates Known item spawners and ammo crates Map spawners and crates replenish Player who reaches the pickup

Apex Legends: match the weapon family and color

Apex uses distinct ammo families. The official weapons guidance lists Light, Heavy, Energy, Shotgun, Sniper, Mythic and Arrows. Each weapon accepts only its designated type, and normal looting requires matching the ammo’s type and color to the weapon you are carrying.

Where Apex ammo comes from

  • Ground loot: loose ammunition is placed around the map and is the first source during an opening rotation.
  • Supply Bins: opening a bin can reveal ammunition alongside weapons and other equipment.
  • Eliminated-player bins: a defeated player’s container lets you recover the ammo they carried, subject to compatibility and what remains.

Some Energy weapons carry a stockpile that regenerates over time. That is a weapon behavior, not a general rule that all Energy ammo is infinite.

The Mythic exception

EA states that “Mythic ammo can’t be replenished or dropped.” Treat Mythic ammunition as a deliberately finite resource: conserve shots, plan the weapon’s role and do not expect a teammate or a loot bin to refill it. This exception is why color matching alone is not enough; the ammo’s quality and weapon rules matter too.

Battlefield REDSEC: bags, categories and full-loadout call-ins

Battlefield REDSEC groups ammunition within weapon categories such as Assault Rifles, SMGs and LMGs rather than treating every caliber as a separate pickup. That makes the category shown by the weapon more important than searching for a specific cartridge name.

  • Customizable experience: Includes 2 custom backbuttons that allow users to eliminate false triggers and improve their gaming experience.
  • Impressive gameplay: Provides a pulsating vibration trigger and an asymmetric vibration grip motor for intense tactile feedback.

Support Class Supply Bag

The Support Class Supply Bag provides multiple magazines, clips or shells for the exact weapon being used. It is a targeted resupply: the player should deploy it when an ally is actively using the weapon that needs ammunition, not assume that any nearby weapon will be filled equally.

Ammo Resupply Call-In

The Ammo Resupply Call-In is a special crate dropped from the sky. It grants full ammunition to all weapons in the current loadout. Because the drop is visible and location-bound, the benefit is balanced by the need to reach and secure the landing area. It is especially valuable before a coordinated push or after a squad has survived a long engagement with several weapons partially depleted.

Warzone and Call of Duty multiplayer: uncertain loot versus guaranteed tools

Warzone Supply Boxes

Opening a Warzone Supply Box releases a handful of items that can include weapons, ammunition, killstreaks, gas masks and cash. Ammo is therefore a possible result, not a guarantee. Search boxes when you are already rotating through them, but do not treat a box as a dependable emergency refill when the circle or an enemy squad is closing in.

Warzone Buy Stations

Buy Stations are the reliable, cash-based option for equipment and loadout items. Their advantage is predictability: if you have the required cash and can reach the station safely, you are using a purchase rule rather than hoping a container rolls ammunition. The trade-off is exposure at a fixed location and the opportunity cost of spending cash that could be needed for another item.

Multiplayer Supply Box Field Upgrade

In Call of Duty multiplayer, the Supply Box Field Upgrade “deploys a box of ammo and equipment for you and your teammates.” It recharges over time, so the resource is repeatable rather than a single map pickup. The box explodes when shot; place it where teammates can use it without turning the resupply point into an obvious target, and remember that an opponent can destroy it.

Destiny 2: a three-tier ammunition economy

Primary, Special and Heavy/Power

Destiny 2 separates ammunition by combat role:

  • Primary ammo: unlimited under the standard economy.
  • Special ammo: limited and tied to weapons that use the Special slot.
  • Heavy/Power ammo: limited and generally the most constrained resource.

Limited ammunition can appear in the world or at Rally flags. Bungie also explains that Special and Power ammo is generated by defeating enemies, with the amount affected by weapon-generation stats, armor mods and activity modifiers. A player who runs dry is therefore dealing with both pickup availability and the activity’s underlying generation rules.

Crucible’s Blended system

Crucible illustrates how a mode can rewrite the normal economy. Under the Blended system described by Bungie, players spawn with one kill’s worth of Special ammo. A Primary-weapon final blow drops a personal brick worth one kill’s ammo, and crates provide one kill’s worth. The brick is personal rather than a squad-wide pile, so another player cannot simply take the same reward.

Bungie reported that Special weapons accounted for 24.3% of kills under the “Respawn (Original)” system and 14.9% under “Blended” in its 2024 comparison. Those figures describe that specific Crucible analysis, not every Destiny 2 activity or a permanent universal ratio.

Halo Infinite: control the map and revisit replenishing spawners

Halo Infinite’s multiplayer rules state: “All item spawners and ammo crates on the map will replenish.” The practical consequence is a timing game. Learn where the ammunition is, note when it was taken, and return after the refill rather than relying only on enemy drops.

This favors teams that maintain map control. Holding a route to a known crate can deny an opponent’s refill, while rotating away immediately after a pickup may surrender the next cycle. Exact refill timing and placement are map- and mode-specific, so use the in-game indicators and the current playlist rules.

What to do when you run dry

  1. Identify the weapon’s ammo rule. Check the ammo icon, family or economy tier. In a category-based game, confirm the color or type; in a tiered game, determine whether the weapon uses Primary, Special or Heavy.
  2. Check whether the weapon has a special exception. Apex Mythic ammo cannot be replenished or dropped, while some Energy weapons regenerate their own stockpile. A normal pickup route may be impossible for an exceptional weapon.
  3. Choose the highest-certainty source you can reach. Prioritize a Supply Bag, a documented resupply crate, a Buy Station with enough cash, a Rally flag, or a known map spawner. Use random boxes when the risk of receiving no ammo is acceptable.
  4. Account for who benefits. A REDSEC call-in fills every weapon in the current loadout, whereas a Supply Bag supplies the exact weapon being used. A multiplayer Supply Box serves you and teammates; a Destiny Crucible brick is personal.
  5. Secure the approach. Fixed stations, sky-dropped crates and known spawners create predictable ambush points. Clear the area, use cover and avoid opening a container in the open if opponents can hear or see the interaction.
  6. Plan the reset. Mark whether the source is one-time, cooldown-based, kill-triggered or a map spawner. If it replenishes, rotate back after the reset instead of abandoning the location permanently.

Why a pickup may not refill your weapon

  • Wrong category: the item belongs to another weapon family or ammo tier.
  • Full reserve: the weapon cannot carry more, even though the pickup remains visible.
  • Mode-specific restriction: the playlist may change spawn grants, crate contents or generation rules.
  • Non-replenishable ammunition: Apex Mythic ammo is explicitly excluded from drops and replenishment.
  • Team-scope misunderstanding: a teammate may have received the resource, or a personal brick may be unavailable to you.
  • Destroyed or expired deployable: a Call of Duty Supply Box can explode when shot, and cooldown tools are not instantly reusable.
  • Patch change: live-service updates can alter quantities, timers and distribution without changing the item’s name.

How to manage ammo as a team

Call out the category, not just “ammo.” Say that you need Heavy, Energy or Special ammunition and identify whether you are asking for a personal pickup, a bag deployment or a team resupply. In REDSEC, coordinate around the Support Bag or the full-loadout call-in. In Warzone, pool cash before approaching a Buy Station so one player is not stranded after an unsuccessful loot search. In Destiny Crucible, remember that the Blended brick is personal and that Primary final blows are part of the Special-ammo loop. In Halo Infinite, assign a player to watch the route to a known replenishing crate.

Why there is no universal FPS ammo rule

A battle royale needs scavenging and uncertainty to keep players moving. An arena shooter can instead make fixed spawners and predictable timers the center of map control. A class-based game uses resupply as a reason to protect a Support player, while a competitive mode may grant ammunition on spawn to prevent an opening disadvantage. Even within one franchise, campaign, multiplayer, battle-royale and ranked modes can use different stacks, timers and reset conditions.

Use the game’s current official mode guide when an exact quantity or timer matters. The durable lesson is the decision framework: match the ammo category, choose the most reliable legal source, understand who receives it, and know what event resets it. That framework applies whether your next refill is a loose round on the floor, a teammate’s bag, a cash purchase, a kill-triggered brick or a crate that returns after the map cycles.
