American billionaires influence warfare less by personally directing troops than by building, financing and leading companies whose software, satellites, cloud services and autonomous systems are entering military use. Government contracts turn those products into capabilities; the firms’ growing role in defense policy also shapes how the capabilities are acquired, tested and overseen.
How private wealth becomes military influence
The influence runs through several connected channels: ownership and investment, company leadership, product design, government procurement and participation in defense policymaking. That does not mean a billionaire independently decides how the military uses a system. The armed forces and government agencies make operational and purchasing decisions, but the companies supplying technology can affect what tools are available, how they work and how quickly they can be adopted.
Palantir grew out of a venture launched by Peter Thiel and Alex Karp after the September 11 attacks; Karp is its CEO and Thiel its board chair, according to the Brennan Center for Justice’s March 2026 report, The Business of Military AI. Anduril, founded in 2017 by technology entrepreneurs led by Palmer Luckey, received early investment from Thiel’s Founders Fund, Joe Lonsdale and Marc Andreessen. Those connections are part of a wider funding network: firms including 8VC, Andreessen Horowitz, Founders Fund and Lux Capital have invested in defense-technology startups. That is evidence of an active investor ecosystem, not proof that one investor controls the sector.

Palantir: the data and decision-support layer
Palantir’s military business centers on software that brings information from different sources together for analysis and planning. The Brennan Center describes Foundry as data-fusion software and Gotham as a decision-support tool for defense and intelligence. The distinction matters: software that organizes information for human users is not, by that fact alone, an autonomous weapon or an automated decision-maker.

In May 2024, the Army awarded Palantir a $480 million battlefield-information software deal, Axios reported. In 2025, the Army consolidated 75 Palantir contracts into one agreement with a ceiling of up to $10 billion over 10 years, according to the Brennan Center. The agreement covers the Titan and Maven Smart System programs. The ceiling is the maximum potential value over the term, not money already spent.
Anduril: sensors, software and autonomous systems
Anduril’s Lattice platform is associated with surveillance, sensor integration and autonomous systems. The company’s work connects software with physical equipment, including systems intended to detect, track or respond to activity. The word “autonomous” covers a range of functions; a system may automate some tasks without operating entirely without human supervision.

In April 2024, the Air Force selected Anduril and General Atomics for collaborative combat aircraft work, Axios reported. The Defense Department also named Anduril among prototype providers for its Replicator initiative. The department’s 2024 announcement set a goal of fielding multiple thousands of all-domain attritable autonomous systems by August 2025. The cited account does not establish whether that goal was met.

SpaceX’s launch and satellite communications business has national-security uses, while Starlink provided connectivity in Ukraine, according to TIME’s February 2024 reporting. Cloud providers supply another enabling layer: the Brennan Center says the Defense Department awarded a Joint Warfighting Cloud Capability contract to Microsoft, Google, Amazon and Oracle in 2022. The report says $1 billion had been awarded, with up to $8 billion more possible. These figures describe awards and potential contract value, not a single company’s revenue or proof that every service was used for a particular operation.

The technology firms do not always compete alone. Palantir’s TITAN partner list includes established contractors such as Northrop Grumman and L3Harris alongside Anduril and other partners. Palantir and Anduril also announced a national-security AI consortium in December 2024; that announcement establishes the companies’ stated initiative, not an independently evaluated outcome.
Ukraine shows how commercial technology can enter a war
TIME’s February 2024 reporting described Ukrainian military users applying Palantir software to analyze satellite imagery, open-source information, drone footage and field reports. The article reported use by more than half a dozen Ukrainian agencies and described a broader private-sector role that included cloud services, cyber defense, Starlink connectivity and experimental drones.

Palantir CEO Alex Karp told TIME that the company’s software was “responsible for most of the targeting in Ukraine.” That is Karp’s characterization, not an independently established statistic. TIME also presented Ukraine’s minister of digital transformation at the time, Mykhailo Fedorov, describing the country’s ambition: “Our big mission is to make Ukraine the world’s tech R&D lab.” The phrase captures a wartime effort to adopt and develop technology quickly; it does not mean technology alone determines battlefield outcomes. Observers have questioned whether high-tech systems have changed the war’s attritional character.
New entrants are growing, but have not displaced defense primes
The latest figures in the Brennan Center’s March 2026 report show fast-growing technology-oriented suppliers alongside much larger traditional contractors. The report gives the following fiscal year 2025 figures:

The report uses “defense revenue” for Palantir and Anduril and “contracting revenue” for Lockheed Martin and RTX, so the labels are not identical accounting categories. Even with that qualification, the scale difference is substantial: the Brennan Center says the five largest traditional primes still dominate defense spending in fiscal year 2025. New firms are expanding the supplier base, not replacing the industrial capacity behind complex weapons systems.
Procurement concentration is also part of the context. Axios reported in July 2024, citing a 2022 assessment, that the number of aerospace and defense prime contractors in the Pentagon’s contracting pool had fallen from 51 to five over three decades. That count refers to primes in the pool, not every defense supplier. A 2024 Army software deal, collaborative-aircraft selection and cloud awards illustrate how agencies are bringing newer capabilities into established procurement structures.
Why oversight matters as capabilities expand
Military AI can help people sort large volumes of data or connect sensors and platforms, but capability claims do not settle questions about accuracy, safety or accountability. The Brennan Center identifies limited transparency, testing and oversight needs, potential civilian harm and friendly fire, privacy, and concentration of military AI work among a small number of firms as concerns. These are risks and governance questions; they are not evidence that every named system is autonomous or that a particular system has caused a specific harm.
- Testing: Agencies need to establish how systems perform under realistic conditions, including degraded data and rapidly changing circumstances, before relying on them.
- Human responsibility: Procurement and operating rules should make clear who reviews recommendations, who can intervene and who is accountable for decisions.
- Transparency: Limited public information can make it difficult to scrutinize a system’s capabilities, limits and role in military decisions.
- Privacy and civilian protection: Data collection, analysis and targeting support raise questions about what information is used and how civilian risk is assessed.
- Concentration and dependence: Reliance on a small number of firms or commercial infrastructure can give private providers significant leverage over essential capabilities.
In a July 2024 Axios interview, Applied Intuition Defense general manager Jason Brown said, “Software and data are now, really, the weapons that matter most.” It is a striking industry claim, but software and data do not replace aircraft, communications networks, weapons, logistics or the public authority that governs their use. The key policy issue is how military institutions integrate private-sector tools while preserving rigorous testing, meaningful oversight and public accountability.
