Laser at AMC is an auditorium projection upgrade, not a single premium movie format. Its laser light source illuminates a projector engine, which forms each movie frame; projection optics then focus and direct the image through the booth opening onto the auditorium screen. AMC says its program uses Barco laser projection, but its public disclosures do not identify one projector model or one internal design for every standard auditorium.
What “Laser at AMC” means
AMC’s Laser at AMC name refers to an upgrade initiative for its auditoriums: replacing xenon-lamp digital projection with laser projection. AMC announced the program in April 2022 in an agreement with Cinionic, a Barco cinema joint venture. The original plan was to install laser projectors in 3,500 U.S. auditoriums, with completion expected by the end of 2026.
In its 2025 annual filing, AMC reported that 2,951 U.S. installations had been completed as of December 31, 2025. That is a dated progress count, not confirmation that the full 3,500-installation target has since been reached. AMC said the original agreement and related auditorium enhancements were valued at around a quarter of a billion dollars; that was an approximate project value, not a price per projector.

How the image travels from projector to screen
A digital movie reaches a cinema projector as image data. The projector turns that data into successive frames of light, and the auditorium screen reflects the resulting image toward the audience. The laser is one part of that chain: it supplies illumination, while other projector components shape that illumination into the picture.
-
The light source supplies illumination
In a laser projector, lasers produce light for the projection system. Cinema implementations include laser-phosphor and RGB laser approaches, which generate usable illumination in different ways. The exact approach used in an individual standard AMC auditorium is not specified in the AMC disclosures discussed here.
In either approach, the light source supplies illumination to the projector engine; it is not itself the movie image. Barco describes both RGB and laser-phosphor systems as producing a white-light interface that enters the engine, though the spectral properties of that light differ. The technology used to make the light is therefore one part of the projector’s design, not a complete description of how it creates and projects each frame.

The projector engine forms the frames
The image-forming engine controls light so that it represents the successive frames of the digital movie. Bright and dark portions of each frame must be represented, as must its colors. The engine is distinct from the light source: knowing that a projector uses lasers does not, by itself, reveal the engine architecture or its components. AMC has not publicly identified one engine design as universal across standard Laser at AMC installations.
This is why it would be inaccurate to describe every Laser at AMC auditorium as using a particular chip or internal optical arrangement. AMC’s public disclosures identify Barco laser projection as the basis of the program but do not name one model or universal engine configuration. The general explanation is that the engine forms the image from the available light; the exact implementation can vary by projector.
-
Projection optics focus and direct the image
After the engine forms the image, the projector’s optics direct and focus it through the booth opening toward the screen. This is the general optical path of cinema projection, not a model-specific specification for AMC equipment. Focus and alignment matter because the image needs to cover the screen in the auditorium rather than simply emerge from the projector as an unfocused beam.

The screen reflects the projected picture
The screen is the visible endpoint: it reflects the projected image so viewers can see it. What an audience perceives is affected not only by the projector but also by screen properties and auditorium geometry. The laser should not be understood as a beam independently drawing each screen pixel; the projector’s image-forming system creates the image that the optics project.

This division of jobs helps explain why “laser projection” is not a complete specification. The source produces light, the engine forms the movie image, the optics deliver it to the screen, and the screen and room affect the presentation seen from a seat.
Put simply, how AMC laser projection works follows the same broad path as cinema projection generally: a light source illuminates the image-forming system, the projector makes the movie’s frames, and optics send the image to the screen. The public information supports that general explanation, but not a teardown of a specific projector installed at every AMC location.
RGB laser and laser phosphor are different approaches
Barco describes two coexisting approaches to cinema laser illumination. In an RGB system, red, green, and blue lasers supply the primary colors. In a laser-phosphor system, blue lasers—and sometimes red lasers—work with a yellow phosphor wheel. Both approaches create a white-light interface that enters the projector engine, but the spectral properties of the resulting light differ. Barco describes them as approaches suited to different market requirements, rather than presenting one as a universal winner.
| Approach | How it produces light | What the cited material establishes |
|---|---|---|
| RGB laser | Red, green, and blue lasers supply the primary colors. | Barco says RGB light has a narrower spectral bandwidth than laser-phosphor light. The AMC disclosures do not establish that this is the configuration in every standard Laser at AMC auditorium. |
| Laser phosphor | Blue lasers, sometimes with red lasers, work with a yellow phosphor wheel to create light for the projector engine. | Barco identifies this as a cinema laser approach. The AMC disclosures do not establish that it is the configuration in every standard Laser at AMC auditorium. |
| Xenon-light-source digital projection | A xenon light source supplies illumination for digital projection. | AMC compares its laser upgrade with digital projectors using xenon light sources, but the cited AMC material does not provide independent, venue-by-venue measurements or numerical comparison results. |
The distinction between the laser approaches is about how the projector produces illumination and the properties of that light—not evidence that one setup is present in every AMC auditorium. A manufacturer’s explanation of available technologies does not identify the hardware installed at a particular theater. Nor does the term “Laser at AMC” alone establish whether a specific installation uses RGB or laser phosphor.

For a viewer, this comparison is useful mainly as context: “laser” does not refer to just one technical design. RGB and laser phosphor describe different ways of generating light for projection, while xenon identifies the older light-source type AMC says its upgrade replaces. The public descriptions do not support ranking individual AMC auditoriums by these approaches or assuming one will always look better than another.

What AMC says viewers may notice
AMC says its laser upgrade improves image contrast, produces more vivid color, and maximizes brightness compared with digital projectors that use xenon light sources. AMC also says the program guarantees light levels near the top end of the 2D DCI specification. Those are AMC’s stated benefits, not independently verified measurements for each theater.
The public AMC material cited for these claims does not give a numeric light level or a controlled comparison showing how much brighter, more contrast-rich, or more colorful a particular auditorium is. Room conditions, screen characteristics, projector setup, and the movie’s own image all affect what a viewer sees. The available claims therefore support describing AMC’s intended benefits, but not promising a measurable difference at every seat or for every film.
In its April 22, 2022 announcement, AMC also said laser projection eliminates xenon bulb replacement and reduces energy use and waste. Those maintenance and environmental benefits are company claims about the upgrade program. The cited disclosure does not quantify the energy or waste reduction for an individual auditorium.

How Laser at AMC relates to premium formats
AMC also lists laser projection in Dolby Cinema at AMC, PRIME at AMC, select IMAX at AMC locations, and newer builds. These names refer to distinct formats or auditorium packages; they should not be treated as interchangeable labels for the standard Laser at AMC upgrade.
Dolby Cinema at AMC combines Dolby Vision laser projection with Dolby Atmos and other auditorium features. That package has its own format identity and should not be used to infer that a standard Laser at AMC auditorium has Dolby Vision, Atmos, or the same equipment. Likewise, a mention of select IMAX installations does not mean every IMAX auditorium at AMC uses the same laser configuration. AMC’s public descriptions do not provide a model-by-model inventory for the standard program.

For a moviegoer choosing a showtime, the distinction is practical: “Laser at AMC” tells you about the projection upgrade, while a premium-format label refers to a broader presentation package or a separately named format. The word “laser” alone does not tell you the screen dimensions, sound system, seat configuration, or other features of a particular auditorium.
So if you are comparing showtimes, look at the format label rather than treating laser as a shorthand for every premium feature. The available AMC descriptions support saying that several separately named formats use laser projection, but they do not establish that all such auditoriums share the same projector, image specification, or overall presentation.
What the rollout numbers do—and do not—say
The rollout has two important public figures, issued at different times:
- 3,500 auditoriums: AMC’s April 2022 announcement described this as the planned U.S. installation total, with completion expected by the end of 2026.
- 2,951 installations: AMC’s 2025 annual filing reported this as the number completed in the United States as of December 31, 2025.
The first figure is the announced target; the second is progress at a specific date. They do not establish the current number of completed installations after that date, nor do they show how many are in a particular market. AMC’s original release also quoted then-Chairman and CEO Adam Aron describing the plan as a way to bring a premium on-screen presentation to hundreds of theaters and thousands of auditoriums. That statement was AMC’s framing of the initiative, not a separate technical specification.
The approximately quarter-billion-dollar value AMC attached to the original agreement and related auditorium enhancements also needs context. It describes the overall announced project, rather than the purchase price of a single laser projector or a cost consumers can use to compare theater tickets. The public figures explain the scale and planned scope of the rollout; they do not reveal the price or technical specifications of each installation.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat to keep in mind about the technology
- Laser identifies the light source, not the whole projector. It does not automatically disclose the engine, resolution, HDR support, or optical design.
- There is no single laser arrangement established for every standard auditorium. RGB and laser-phosphor are both cinema approaches, but AMC’s public disclosures do not map either one to each site.
- Company performance claims are not venue-level test results. AMC describes improved brightness, contrast, and color against xenon projection, but the cited material does not publish independent measurements for individual theaters.
- Format names matter. Dolby Cinema, PRIME, select IMAX, and standard Laser at AMC are not blanket synonyms for one another.

How does laser projection work in a movie theater?
The laser light source supplies illumination to the projector engine, which forms successive movie frames. Projection optics focus and direct the image through the booth opening to the screen, which reflects it toward the audience.
Does every standard Laser at AMC auditorium use RGB lasers?
AMC’s public disclosures do not identify one light-source arrangement for every standard installation. Barco describes both RGB laser and laser-phosphor cinema approaches, but those descriptions do not establish which is installed at a particular AMC auditorium.
Is Laser at AMC the same as Dolby Cinema or IMAX?
No. Laser at AMC is an upgrade initiative, while Dolby Cinema, PRIME, and select IMAX are separately named formats or packages. Dolby Cinema at AMC combines Dolby Vision laser projection with Dolby Atmos and other auditorium features.
How many Laser at AMC installations were complete?
AMC’s 2025 annual filing reported 2,951 U.S. installations as of December 31, 2025. That is a dated progress figure and does not confirm that the original 3,500-installation target has since been completed.
The Bottom Line
Laser at AMC describes a projector light-source upgrade, not one universal projector model or premium format. The light source illuminates the image-forming engine; optics send the resulting frames to the screen. AMC says the change improves brightness, contrast, and color versus xenon projection, but its public disclosures do not provide independent measurements for every auditorium or identify one exact configuration across the program.
