Amazon warehouse robots do not replace every step of order fulfillment. They perform defined transport, lifting, sorting, picking, and stowing tasks while employees operate workstations, handle exceptions, monitor flow, and maintain the surrounding process. A robot may bring a storage pod to a person, carry a heavy cart, or position an item for ergonomic access; the employee still makes many of the decisions that complete the task.

The exact equipment and traffic rules vary by facility. Amazon’s published descriptions show a coordinated system of mobile robots, robotic arms, software, and human workers—not one general-purpose machine that independently completes an entire customer order.

The basic division of work

Amazon’s fulfillment robotics are designed around specific jobs. Mobile machines move inventory or carts, robotic arms assist with package sorting, and newer systems help employees pick or stow items from storage pods. People remain at stations or in operational roles around those machines.

  • Robots handle movement and repetitive handling: They can transport storage pods, carts, pallets, containers, or individual packages through designated areas.
  • Employees complete station work: A worker may sort, count, pick, stow, scan, inspect, or pack items after a robot presents them.
  • People manage exceptions: Unusual items, blocked paths, damaged goods, software alerts, and equipment problems require human judgment.
  • Safety and operations teams oversee the system: Employees monitor traffic, maintain equipment, manage inventory flow, and respond when automated equipment cannot proceed.

This division is important because a robot’s capability is usually narrower than the name of the overall process. A pod-moving robot is not necessarily a picking robot, and a sorting arm is not a complete order-fulfillment system.

How a robot-assisted order flow works

A typical workflow can be understood as a sequence of handoffs. The exact sequence depends on the building, inventory type, and automation installed there.

  1. Inventory is stored. Products are placed in bins inside movable storage pods or in other designated storage locations.
  2. A software system assigns a movement. A mobile robot receives a route or task to retrieve a pod, container, cart, or load.
  3. The robot brings the work to an operating area. Instead of a worker walking through long aisles to find every item, the machine transports the relevant storage unit or load.
  4. An employee works at the station. The worker scans, picks, stows, counts, sorts, or otherwise processes the item according to the station’s instructions.
  5. Automation moves the next load. Another robot may return the pod, move the completed container, or carry the resulting cart to the next area.
  6. People resolve exceptions. If an item is inaccessible, misidentified, damaged, oversized, or outside the machine’s expected conditions, an employee intervenes.

This “goods-to-person” approach changes where walking occurs; it does not eliminate the employee’s role in identifying and handling products.

System or robot type Primary task described by Amazon How people interact with it Status and evidence qualification
Drive units Move storage pods containing bins across the floor to a workstation. An employee at the station sorts, stows, or counts items presented by the pod. Described as an established “bring items to the person” workflow; the pod design was influenced by employee feedback.
Titan Move larger or bulkier loads, including small appliances and pallets of pet food or gardening equipment. Employees work around the transported loads and handle the surrounding fulfillment steps. Amazon stated in 2023 that Titan can lift up to 2,500 pounds.
Proteus The earlier system transports carts in dock areas; Amazon says those carts can weigh close to 400 kilograms. Workers operate in and around dock areas while the robot moves carts. A 2026 announcement described a next-generation Proteus able to take conversational instructions and work beyond the original dock-area scope. That is an announced capability, not proof of network-wide deployment.
Sequoia Deliver containers to an employee at a redesigned workstation. The employee receives inventory in a station intended to keep more activity in an ergonomic “power zone.” Amazon presents reduced above-head reaching and squatting as design aims.
Robin Assist with sorting customer orders using robotic arms. Employees supervise the sorting process and handle items or conditions the arm cannot process. Amazon reported more than 1,000 Robins and more than 2 billion packages assisted with in a safety article; those are company figures tied to that article’s publication period, not a current count.
Vulcan Pick and stow inventory by combining visual sensing with touch. Employees work with the system’s inventory flow and handle exceptions or tasks outside its operating range. Amazon’s 2025 account placed it at sites in Spokane, Washington, and Hamburg, Germany, including pod rows around eight feet high.
STARK The supplied Amazon announcement names STARK in plans for European expansion but does not establish a complete task specification. Human interaction details were not stated in that announcement. Treat the European expansion as an announced plan rather than a completed deployment.

How employees work with storage pods and containers

Drive units bring the pod instead of sending a worker through every aisle

In Amazon’s described drive-unit system, a mobile robot travels under or with a storage pod and moves that pod to a workstation. The worker does not wander through the storage area looking for each bin. At the station, the employee may sort items, stow incoming inventory, or count products. Amazon has said employee feedback influenced the yellow pod design, illustrating that the physical interface is adjusted around the person who uses it.

The robot’s job is the movement. The employee still identifies the correct item, follows the station’s instructions, confirms the transaction, and deals with an item that is missing, damaged, hard to grasp, or stored in an unexpected way.

Sequoia presents containers at an ergonomic station

Amazon describes Sequoia as delivering containers to a newly designed workstation. The stated goal is to keep more of the employee’s work within a comfortable reach zone, reducing above-head reaches and deep squats. Those are intended ergonomic benefits; Amazon’s description does not establish that every site or every worker experiences the same result.

Vulcan combines vision and touch for picking and stowing

Vulcan is described as sensing touch as well as seeing items. That combination is intended to help with inventory in both upper and lower pod locations, including rows around eight feet high. Amazon identified Spokane, Washington, and Hamburg, Germany, as operating locations in its 2025 account. A person remains part of the larger process, especially when an item’s shape, packaging, placement, or condition falls outside what the system can reliably handle.

How robots move heavy or bulky loads

Titan handles loads beyond ordinary tote movement

Amazon positions Titan as a mobile robot for larger and bulkier loads, such as small appliances or pallets of pet food and gardening equipment. Amazon stated in 2023 that Titan can lift up to 2,500 pounds. That figure is Amazon’s stated capacity, not an independently measured performance result, and it does not mean every Titan task uses that maximum.

Proteus works with carts in dock areas

Amazon’s earlier description of Proteus places it in dock areas transporting carts that can weigh close to 400 kilograms. Employees continue to work in those areas while the robot performs the movement. In 2026, Amazon announced a next-generation Proteus that can take conversational instructions and operate beyond the dock areas associated with the earlier system. The announcement describes an intended expansion of capability, so it should not be read as evidence that every fulfillment center already uses that version.

How robotic arms assist with package sorting

Robin is an example of a fixed robotic arm working alongside people rather than replacing the entire sorting operation. Amazon says Robin assists with sorting customer orders. The arm can perform a repeatable handling motion, while employees feed the process, monitor performance, resolve jams or unusual packages, and continue downstream work.

Amazon reported more than 1,000 Robin arms deployed and more than 2 billion packages assisted with in a safety article. Because those figures belong to the publication period of that article, they should not be treated as a current fleet total. They also describe packages assisted with, not packages sorted without human involvement.

How safety is supposed to work around moving robots

Employee-worn technology can signal an access path

Amazon’s older robotics workflow account and its safety overview describe a robotics technology vest worn by employees in a robotics facility. The vest allows an employee to signal an access path. Robots are then described as slowing down or updating their routes to avoid that area. This is an interaction layer between a person and autonomous movement, not a substitute for site procedures, training, or physical controls.

Amazon has not publicly disclosed in the cited descriptions the complete detection range, fail-safe design, traffic-control specification, or the conditions under which a robot must stop rather than reroute. Those details can be site- and system-specific.

Robots are intended to reduce some physical demands

Amazon says mobile robotics can reduce walking distance, repetitive bending and twisting, and heavy lifting. It presents Sequoia’s station and Vulcan’s picking and stowing role as ways to keep more work in a comfortable power zone, reduce ladder use, and limit reaching. These are stated design goals and claimed benefits, not independent proof that every employee or facility experiences the same reduction in strain.

People remain responsible for exceptions and safe flow

A robot may be able to follow a mapped route, but a fulfillment center contains changing conditions: a person may enter a travel lane, a cart may be misplaced, a package may fall, or an item may not fit the expected profile. Employees monitor flow, clear problems, inspect equipment, and decide how to proceed when normal automation cannot continue.

What the published safety numbers do—and do not—show

Amazon reported that, in 2022, recordable incident rates at robotics sites were 15% lower and lost-time incident rates were 18% lower than at non-robotics sites. Amazon reported these figures in its 2023 Titan announcement.

The comparison is an association, not proof that robots caused the lower rates. Robotics sites may differ from non-robotics sites in layout, staffing, training, equipment, work mix, age, or other safety practices. The cited material does not provide an independent evaluation or isolate the causal effect of automation.

What “working alongside” means for warehouse jobs

Amazon’s descriptions leave several human roles in place even when a facility has extensive automation:

  • Station operators pick, stow, count, sort, scan, or confirm products.
  • Exception handlers resolve items that are damaged, unrecognized, inaccessible, oversized, or incorrectly placed.
  • Flow and control staff monitor queues, route work, and keep inventory moving between process areas.
  • Maintenance and technical staff inspect, repair, and return robots, conveyors, arms, scanners, and workstations to service.
  • Safety personnel and trained associates apply site rules when people and mobile equipment share space.

Automation changes the physical and informational demands of these jobs. It does not establish, from the cited descriptions alone, a universal increase or decrease in employment, workload, productivity, or injury risk.

Current expansion plans and geographic limits

Amazon’s 2026 announcement described plans to expand Vulcan and STARK in Europe and said the company plans to grow its European fulfillment-center workforce by 25,000 jobs in coming years. That is an announced hiring plan, not completed hiring.

Amazon also previously said it had more than 750,000 robots across its operations in a 2023-era safety article. That is a historical, company-reported fleet figure. It should not be presented as a verified count for 2026 without a newer disclosure.

Facility practices differ by country, building design, inventory profile, equipment generation, and local safety procedures. A robot described at one site may not be installed, configured, or used in the same way at another.

Limits of the “robots do everything” picture

  • Not every robot can navigate the entire facility; many operate in defined zones or on defined routes.
  • Not every robot handles an entire customer order. Different machines may move a pod, present a container, sort a package, and transport a completed cart at separate stages.
  • Human station work remains necessary for many products and transactions.
  • Safety features such as a technology vest are described at a high level; the cited accounts do not publish every engineering safeguard.
  • Company-reported safety, deployment, and package figures require attribution and date context.

The most accurate mental model is a coordinated team: software assigns work, mobile robots move defined loads, arms perform repeatable handling, and employees supply judgment, dexterity, oversight, and recovery when real-world conditions do not match the expected workflow.
