Amazon Store was built to solve a practical publishing problem: Dave Cross wanted to write each product link once without choosing a single Amazon country store for every reader. The JavaScript helper uses browser and page signals to select a regional destination, while leaving the original link usable if JavaScript does not run.
The problem with choosing one Amazon store
Cross says his content sites use Amazon affiliate links, but serving readers in different countries created an awkward choice: point everyone to one regional Amazon store, or maintain separate links for multiple stores. The first can send an overseas visitor to a less relevant catalogue; the second means more links to create and maintain. These are the tradeoffs Cross describes for his own publishing workflow, not a measured claim about all Amazon publishers. Cross’s account on DEV Community
Amazon Store changes the link-generation approach. Rather than hardcoding a country-specific product destination into every link, a publisher supplies an ASIN or search phrase and an optional Associate tag. The script builds a link for a regional Amazon store using its region-selection logic. The project describes itself as a small, dependency-free helper. Project README
How Amazon Store chooses a destination
The project documentation describes region detection as an inference from browser and page settings, not proof of a visitor’s physical location. Its documented order starts with browser values, including language and time zone, then uses the page’s language and the hostname’s top-level domain as additional signals before falling back. Developers can also force a region. Project README

That distinction matters when a browser’s settings do not match where its user lives. Cross describes a case where a browser language set simply to en did not identify an India-based visitor as being in India. He also describes the project’s “More stores” grid, which lets visitors choose a store directly when automatic selection is not right. Cross’s account on DEV Community
What the project changes for publishers and readers
| Approach | Publisher maintenance | Destination selection | Without JavaScript |
|---|---|---|---|
| One fixed regional link | One destination to maintain per product, but it is fixed to that store. | Publisher chooses the store; the visitor does not get an inferred local destination from the link. | The link remains a standard link. |
| Separate links for multiple stores | Publisher maintains region-specific destinations. | Publisher must decide how to present or select among those links. | Links remain standard links if included in the page markup. |
| Amazon Store | Publisher can describe a product once in markup and configure a tag globally or per link. | Script infers a region from browser and page signals; visitors can choose from the store grid. | The original markup remains a usable link, according to Cross and the project documentation. |
The comparison is about workflow and behavior described by the author and project, not a measured performance or revenue test. Cross’s aim was to write the HTML once per product rather than manage a country-specific destination for every reader. DEV Community article

How to mark up links
The README documents CDN and npm use, with UMD and ESM builds. It prefers an ASIN when the same product identifier works for the intended stores; a search link is an alternative when the product identifier varies by store or a search destination is preferable. The precise setup depends on the chosen build and the project’s current README. Project README and implementation instructions
- Use
data-amazon-asinto identify a product by ASIN. - Use
data-amazon-searchfor a search phrase when an ASIN is unsuitable. - Set an Associate tag globally or on an individual link, as documented by the project.
- Use the documented region override when the destination should not be inferred.
- The README also documents optional URL parameters and a path override for more specific link construction.
The repository documents an MIT license and a no-dependency implementation. Its README is the appropriate place to check current installation instructions and release details; version numbers and CDN paths can change. Amazon Store on GitHub

What to keep in mind
- Automatic selection can be wrong because browser language and time zone are signals, not a location guarantee. Keep the direct store-choice option available.
- Cross says the original link remains usable when JavaScript is disabled, blocked, or fails to load. The project calls this progressive enhancement: the script improves the link rather than being required for a basic link to work.
- A generated destination and tag do not, by themselves, establish how a sale will be attributed. The relevant Amazon program and account configuration matter; the project materials cited here do not establish commission terms, cookie periods, or program availability.
