Amazon Lightning Deals are short-running discounts limited to a promotional allocation. A deal can sell out before its countdown reaches zero: the timer shows the scheduled window, not a guarantee that the discount will remain available until then. A “100% claimed” indicator refers to that deal allocation, which may be in shoppers’ carts or already purchased—not necessarily every unit of the product Amazon sells.
What an Amazon Lightning Deal is
A Lightning Deal is a time-bound promotion on a product, with a limited number of promotional discounts available. Amazon US Seller Central describes the format as a special offer with merchandising such as a Deals badge, usually lasting 4 to 12 hours, with Amazon determining the duration. That is US seller guidance; it is not a promise that every deal in every Amazon store lasts the same amount of time.

For ordinary Lightning Deals, Amazon’s US seller guidance says they usually run for 4 to 12 hours. Amazon decides the duration. For US Prime Day 2026, Amazon’s seller playbook says an event Lightning Deal may run for up to 12 hours or until sold out. The event-specific wording describes a maximum, not a minimum duration or guaranteed availability for the full period.

Do not confuse a Lightning Deal with a Best Deal. In the cited US seller guidance, a Best Deal runs for a limited number of days, rather than the typical hours-long Lightning Deal window. Amazon’s 2026 US Prime Day playbook says Prime-Exclusive Best Deals can run for the duration of the event. These are distinct deal formats, so the longer schedule for a Best Deal should not be applied to a Lightning Deal.

Can a Lightning Deal sell out before the timer ends?
Yes. The scheduled time is not a stock guarantee. Amazon’s US consumer guidance explains that a Lightning Deal can be finished when its promotional quantity sells out, even if the countdown has time left. Other shoppers may claim the limited discount while you are still deciding whether to buy.

Amazon’s US consumer guide says the status bar can reach 100% when all promotional discounts are being held in other customers’ carts or have been used to purchase the deal. In that situation, the product page may show a “Join waitlist” control. “100% claimed” therefore describes the allocation for that promotion; it does not establish that all ordinary inventory for the product is gone from Amazon.
A full claimed bar also does not tell you that the deal is permanently over. Amazon says the waitlist control may appear when discounts are held in other carts or already used. The published explanation does not promise that a waitlisted shopper will receive a discount, so treat the control as a way to join the waitlist—not as a guaranteed reservation or purchase.

Amazon’s consumer article, attributed to Dave Johnson, was published July 8, 2023 and updated July 12, 2025. The interface description is an explanation of what the deal status can mean, not a guarantee that every listing will display identical wording or controls.
What a low-stock bar does—and does not—tell you
Amazon’s US consumer guidance says a Lightning Deal page may show the percentage claimed, and may show a fuel-gauge-style indicator when promotional inventory is running low. The deal box may also show the deal price and discount. These details help indicate demand for the limited promotion, but do not reveal total marketplace inventory or guarantee that a particular shopper can still get the discount.

For instance, a product can still be sold on Amazon after its Lightning Deal allocation is exhausted, but the deal price may no longer be available. The indicator is about the promotional offer, not a storewide count of every unit, seller or price for that product. Check the live listing for the current price and deal status rather than assuming that a product’s continued presence means the promotion is still active.
Does adding a Lightning Deal to your cart reserve it?
Do not treat adding a deal to your cart as a guaranteed reservation without checking the rules for your Amazon store. The available checkout guidance is marketplace-specific: Amazon UK says a shopper has 15 minutes to complete a purchase after adding a Lightning Deal to the basket. If the shopper does not check out within that window, they lose the deal and it may become available to someone else. That 15-minute rule is Amazon UK guidance and should not be generalized to other marketplaces.
The countdown on the product page and the basket checkout window are different things. The countdown concerns the deal’s scheduled period; the UK 15-minute window concerns the time to complete checkout after adding that deal to the basket. If a listing is popular, check the current basket and store-specific terms rather than assuming that simply adding the item guarantees the price.

In practical terms, adding the offer is not the same as completing the purchase. On Amazon UK, the stated window makes prompt checkout important; in other stores, consult the terms shown for that marketplace rather than applying the UK limit automatically. Do not rely on the product-page timer as a substitute for checking whether the deal is actually in your basket and whether checkout is complete.

Prime eligibility depends on the store and the event. Amazon’s US consumer guide says Prime members can see upcoming Lightning Deals before they start, and that Lightning Deals are exclusive to Prime members on Prime Day. Amazon UK says Lightning Deals are exclusive to Prime members on Prime Day and Prime Big Deal Days, while shoppers can generally access them outside those events.
Those are marketplace- and event-specific terms, not a universal rule that every Lightning Deal requires Prime. Before relying on early access or eligibility, check the listing and the current terms for the Amazon marketplace you are using. Event rules can be different from the access rules for Lightning Deals at other times.
Early visibility and eligibility are also separate benefits. The US guidance says Prime members can see upcoming Lightning Deals before they begin; it does not mean every offer is available for purchase early. For an event-specific promotion, verify whether Prime is required to buy, whether early access applies, and when the deal actually starts on your local Amazon store.
How to read a Lightning Deal before buying
- Check the deal format. Confirm that the listing identifies the offer as a Lightning Deal rather than a Best Deal; the two formats have different typical durations.
- Read the timer as a deadline, not a reservation. It indicates the scheduled deal window. A running timer does not mean promotional stock is guaranteed to remain.
- Look at the claimed indicator. A percentage or “100% claimed” status concerns the deal allocation. If all discounts are held or used, Amazon may offer a waitlist rather than an immediately available discount.
- Check the price and discount on the deal box. Amazon’s US consumer guidance says the box may show both. Compare the offer shown at the time you shop, since the promotion can end before its scheduled window if its allocation is claimed.
- Confirm eligibility for your store and event. Prime may provide early visibility or be required during particular deal events, but the cited guidance does not make Prime mandatory for every Lightning Deal in every marketplace.
- Check basket terms and complete checkout promptly. Amazon UK publishes a 15-minute checkout window after adding a Lightning Deal to the basket. That specific rule is UK guidance; check your local store’s terms instead of assuming the same window elsewhere.
Why an apparent deal may no longer be available
- The promotional allocation has been claimed. The offer can sell out before its listed time expires.
- Discounts are temporarily held in other carts. Amazon may show 100% claimed and a waitlist when all promotional discounts are held or already used.
- The checkout window expired. In Amazon UK’s published guidance, a shopper who does not complete the purchase within 15 minutes of adding the deal to the basket loses it; the offer may then become available to another shopper.
- The deal’s scheduled window ended. A Lightning Deal is time-bound even if promotional allocation was not exhausted earlier.
- Eligibility differs for the event or store. Prime access rules vary by marketplace and by major deal event, so the offer may not be available to every shopper under the same terms.
For an individual offer, the product page is the most relevant place to check its current price, status, remaining time and eligibility. Amazon’s public guidance describes common behavior, but its own wording makes clear that deal duration and interface details may depend on the store, product or event.
