Aluminium could raise the amount of lithium an anode stores per gram because it forms lithium–aluminium alloys, rather than merely hosting lithium between graphite layers. That is an active-material opportunity, not proof that a phone or electric car battery will immediately hold more energy. Alloy formation can expand aluminium dramatically, damage the electrode, consume lithium inventory and leave the cathode—not the anode—as the full cell’s capacity limit.
The most accurate answer is therefore conditional: aluminium anodes could increase lithium-ion capacity if researchers control reaction kinetics, volume change, electrical contact, first-cycle losses and cell balance. Laboratory results are promising in specific composites and alloys, but they do not establish a single practical capacity for pure aluminium foil or a commercial replacement for graphite.
What an aluminium anode is—and what it is not
In an ordinary lithium-ion cell, the anode accepts lithium during charging and releases it during discharge. Graphite does this mainly by intercalation: lithium enters the spaces between carbon layers, producing lithiated graphite such as LiC6.
Aluminium follows a different mechanism. Lithium reacts with aluminium to form lithium–aluminium alloy phases, including LiAl. Because alloying can accommodate more lithium per mass of active material than graphite intercalation, aluminium has a higher theoretical material-level capacity.

This only applies when aluminium is the electrochemically active anode. Aluminium foil is also widely used as a current collector: a conductive support that carries electrons to and from an electrode coating. In that role it does not automatically add the alloying capacity discussed here. A foil can be a collector, an active alloying anode, or both, depending on its composition, surface treatment and cell design.
Why aluminium’s capacity looks attractive
A frequently repeated figure is 993 mAh g−1 for aluminium. Tianye Zheng and Steven T. Boles’ 2023 review warns that this number is commonly misunderstood. Their abstract states that “the common knowledge of Al having a capacity of 993 mAh g−1 is inaccurate and attributed to kinetic limitations.” In other words, phase formation, reaction rates and cycling conditions determine what an aluminium electrode can actually deliver; the number should not be treated as a guaranteed practical capacity.
For context, a 2020 Nature Communications analysis compares graphite at 372 mAh g−1 with approximately 990 mAh g−1 for the conversion of aluminium to AlLi. Those are active-material comparison figures from that paper, not measurements of complete commercial cells.

| Aluminium figure often quoted in general discussions | 993 mAh g−1 | Value that Zheng and Boles (2023) say is inaccurately understood because of kinetic limitations |
Alloying also changes volume. The 2020 analysis reports approximately 10% expansion when graphite changes from C6 to LiC6, compared with approximately 100% expansion when aluminium forms AlLi. That difference is central to the engineering problem: more stored lithium comes with much greater mechanical strain.

Why a higher anode capacity does not double a battery’s capacity
A cell’s capacity is set by the usable lithium inventory and by whichever electrode reaches its limit first. The cathode, not the anode, often limits the capacity of a full cell. Replacing graphite with a higher-capacity anode does not help if the cathode cannot supply additional lithium or if the new anode requires so much inactive material that the gain disappears.
Engineers must balance several quantities:
- Electrode capacity: active-material capacity is different from the capacity of the complete coated electrode, which includes binder, conductive additives, pores and current collectors.
- Loading and thickness: a thin laboratory coating can show an attractive value while storing little energy per unit area. Practical cells need high areal loading without losing transport or mechanical integrity.
- Inactive mass and volume: separators, electrolyte, casings, tabs and current collectors reduce cell-level energy density.
- Lithium inventory: first-cycle irreversible reactions can consume lithium. A cell may need pre-lithiation to compensate, but that adds process complexity and safety controls.
- Power and rate: a material that stores lithium slowly may show high capacity only at a low current, not during rapid charging or discharge.
- Expansion allowance: space, compression and flexible binders may be required to accommodate swelling, reducing the apparent advantage of a denser anode.
The 2020 Nature Communications discussion therefore treats a stable metallic-foil anode as a design possibility that might also displace a heavy copper current collector. That is a systems-level idea, not a prediction that any aluminium sheet can replace a finished graphite electrode.
What makes aluminium electrodes fade or fail
Large expansion and contraction
Repeated formation and removal of LiAl can swell and shrink the active material. Stress can crack particles, break electrical pathways and detach material from the current collector. Fresh surfaces then react with electrolyte, thickening the solid-electrolyte interphase and consuming more lithium and electrolyte.
Pulverization and loss of contact
When an aluminium particle or foil pulverizes, some fragments become electrically isolated. The cell may still contain aluminium, but isolated material can no longer contribute its theoretical capacity. Nieradko, Eskandarian and Semenikhin’s 2019 study of aluminium anodes coated with a polymer electrolyte describes rapid fading and failure in the studied typical aluminium-anode context, associating it with LiAl volume increase, mechanical stress, pulverization and permanent active-material loss. That observation belongs to their tested formulation; it does not show that every aluminium-containing composite fails identically.

Reaction kinetics and phase pathways
Aluminium can form different alloy phases under different potentials, temperatures and current rates. If lithium cannot move through the electrode quickly enough, the measured capacity may be far below a stoichiometric calculation. Zheng and Boles’ review discusses phase formation, cycling conditions, pre-lithiation and β-LiAl as an intercalation host, illustrating why a capacity number needs its test protocol attached.
First-cycle efficiency and lithium loss
A new aluminium surface can consume lithium while its interphase forms. Low initial coulombic efficiency leaves less cyclable lithium for the rest of the cell. Even if later cycles are stable, the lost lithium can reduce the full cell’s usable capacity unless it is supplied by a controlled pre-lithiation step.
What experiments have actually demonstrated
Published results show several strategies, but they use different materials and cell configurations. Their numbers should not be ranked as if they were equivalent commercial-cell tests.

The 2016 expanded-graphite/aluminium-nanoparticle result is especially easy to misquote. Its 480 mAh g−1 value belongs to the entire tested composite under a stated current, and its 84% figure is retention after 300 cycles under that study’s protocol. It does not mean pure aluminium foil delivers 480 mAh g−1 in every cell.

How researchers could make an aluminium anode practical
Use a composite architecture
Embedding aluminium nanoparticles in expanded graphite or another conductive scaffold can shorten lithium paths and provide space for expansion. A scaffold can preserve electrical contact as aluminium changes volume, while graphite supplies a continuous conductive network. The trade-off is that the scaffold adds mass that does not provide the maximum alloy capacity.
Control particle size and interfaces
Small particles can reduce the distance lithium must travel and distribute strain across many domains. Protective coatings, elastic binders and engineered interfaces may limit electrolyte attack and keep particles connected. These solutions must survive thousands of expansion cycles rather than only improve an initial half-cell measurement.
Engineer an aluminium foil or alloy
A self-supporting foil could reduce binder and conductive-additive content and might replace a separate current collector. The 2026 study’s comparison of 1 wt% silicon, copper and magnesium additions shows why alloy chemistry matters: small composition changes can alter mechanical behavior, reaction pathways and failure in a complete cell. There is no universal “best” additive independent of cathode, electrolyte, loading and formation protocol.
Pre-lithiate deliberately
Pre-lithiation can supply lithium consumed during initial interphase formation or establish a desired Li–Al phase before normal cycling. It must be tightly controlled because excess reactive lithium creates manufacturing and safety challenges. A pre-lithiation benefit in a research cell cannot be assumed to transfer directly to mass production.

Design the complete cell around strain
Electrode thickness, porosity, compression, separator clearance and electrolyte wetting all have to accommodate repeated swelling. A cell that works with a lightly loaded laboratory electrode may fail when scaled to the areal loadings needed for transportation or grid storage.
Can aluminium replace graphite?
Not as a general, demonstrated drop-in replacement. Aluminium is a candidate anode material whose advantages depend on maintaining contact and lithium efficiency through repeated alloying. Graphite has lower material-level capacity, but its modest volume change, established processing and predictable cycling are valuable at the cell level.
A credible replacement claim should specify whether the aluminium is pure or alloyed, foil or particles, active material or current collector, and whether the result comes from a half-cell or a balanced full cell. It should also report areal loading, current rate, first-cycle efficiency, cycle count, retention, cathode, electrolyte and formation conditions. Without those details, “aluminium has 993 mAh g−1” says little about usable battery energy.
Aluminium-ion batteries are a different chemistry
An aluminium-ion battery should not be used as evidence that an aluminium alloy anode works in a lithium-ion battery. The 2017 Nature Communications example pairs an aluminium metal anode with a natural graphite cathode. During operation, chloroaluminate anions intercalate into the graphite electrode. The charge carrier, electrode reactions and electrolyte differ from a lithium-ion cell in which lithium alloys with an aluminium anode.
The shared presence of aluminium in the name does not make the two chemistries interchangeable. Capacity, voltage, lifetime and safety data from an aluminium-ion cell cannot be transferred to a lithium-ion aluminium-anode design.
How to judge an aluminium-anode capacity claim
- Identify the active material. Check whether the number is for pure aluminium, an aluminium alloy, an aluminium–carbon composite or a full electrode.
- Separate half-cell from full-cell data. A test against excess lithium does not reveal how a balanced cathode-limited cell will perform.
- Check the units and current. Record mAh g−1, current density, areal loading and whether the mass includes only aluminium or the whole electrode.
- Look for first-cycle efficiency. High reversible capacity with a large irreversible loss may require pre-lithiation.
- Examine retention and failure mode. Ask how many cycles were completed, at what rate and temperature, and whether fading came from cracking, isolation, electrolyte depletion or lithium exhaustion.
- Account for volume. Compare swollen-electrode thickness and cell-level energy, not only gravimetric active-material capacity.
- Check the cathode and current collector. An anode improvement cannot raise capacity beyond the lithium and voltage limits of the complete cell.
Where the technology stands
Aluminium alloying is scientifically credible and offers a route to higher anode-material capacity than graphite. The same alloy reaction creates the central obstacle: approximately 100% material expansion in the cited Al-to-AlLi comparison, plus kinetic and lithium-inventory problems. Research composites, coatings and dilute foil alloys show ways to manage those issues, but their results remain formulation- and cell-specific.
For now, the defensible conclusion is that aluminium could increase lithium-ion battery capacity only as part of a carefully engineered electrode and full-cell architecture. It has not been established that ordinary commercial batteries have already gained a particular percentage of capacity from aluminium anodes, nor that unmodified aluminium foil can replace graphite.
