Airport lost-and-found is not one worldwide system. It is usually a local operation combining staff, an inventory or case-management database, and a process for traveler reports, matching, identity checks and return. The correct route depends on exactly where you last had the item: a terminal, aircraft cabin, checked-baggage system, security checkpoint or public transit area may each be handled by a different organization.
Start with the operator responsible for that location, then use its current official lost-and-found page. A newly found item may not be searchable immediately, a likely match is not proof of ownership, and retention periods, fees and shipping rules differ by airport.
First identify who is responsible for the place where the item disappeared
Airport offices generally handle property found in areas assigned to them. Airlines, security agencies and transit operators handle other areas. Using the wrong form can delay a claim because the airport may never receive the item.

These assignments are examples from individual airports, not a universal allocation rule. If you are unsure, tell the airport where you were standing, which operator you used and whether the item was in a bag or on your person; staff can direct you to the correct channel.

The common tracking workflow, from intake to return
1. Staff receive the item and create a record
When an employee or passenger turns in property, staff inspect it, assign a record and capture identifying details. Mumbai airport says its records include an item description, the report date and time, and the depositor’s signature. Other systems also record where the item was found, its condition, distinguishing marks and a storage location.
At Los Angeles International Airport, the lost-and-found team says it uses “Pixit Powered by Crowdfind” to inventory found items and review inquiries. That is evidence of a named deployment at that airport, not evidence that every airport uses the same product.
2. The record enters a searchable inventory
Some airports publish found items in an online database; others keep a local case system and search it after receiving a passenger report. Heathrow says handed-in property goes into its database but warns that new entries can take 24 to 48 hours to appear. A delay can therefore mean that staff have not finished intake, not that the item was never found.

The available interfaces vary. You may search a public list, submit an item description and the date it went missing, open an inquiry, or contact an office by phone or email. Toronto Pearson issues a report number and searches its inventory. Denver’s process asks for a description and the date of loss. Keep the reference number, confirmation email and any photographs you submitted.

4. The system proposes possible matches
Search tools can compare descriptions, categories, dates, locations and photographs. A candidate match is only a lead: staff still need to determine whether the details fit and whether the claimant can establish ownership. The sources do not establish a universal matching algorithm, common accuracy rate or fully automated decision process.
5. Staff verify ownership and arrange handoff
An office may ask for a detailed description, a serial number, a photograph taken before the loss, a receipt, identifying marks or travel information. Verification protects owners and prevents someone from claiming a similar-looking phone, bag or jacket. Once approved, the office explains pickup, an authorized representative or delivery.
How to report a lost item without losing time
- Pin down the last confirmed location. Note the terminal, gate, security lane, restaurant, aircraft seat, baggage belt, train platform and approximate time. Separate “left on the plane” from “noticed missing in the terminal.”
- Choose the responsible operator. Use the airport’s current official lost-and-found page for terminal property, the airline for aircraft or checked baggage, and the security or transit operator for those areas.
- Write a distinctive description. Include brand and model, color, size, case or stickers, damage, contents, serial or asset number and any unique marks. For a bag, list the tag number and unusual contents without revealing sensitive credentials.
- Provide journey details. Add the date, flight number, route, arrival or departure, gate, seat and the place and time you last saw the item. Denver’s published process specifically uses the item description and loss date to search.
- Submit one complete report and save its number. Pearson describes issuing a report number. Use it in follow-ups instead of creating multiple overlapping reports that can confuse a case search.
- Check again after the airport’s stated delay. If the airport warns of a 24-to-48-hour intake lag, wait through that window while monitoring the report. Contact the office sooner only if its instructions say urgent items, identity documents or medication require immediate handling.
- Respond to verification requests through the official channel. Do not send passwords, full payment-card numbers or account credentials. An airport should be able to verify ownership with item-specific evidence and travel details.
What the software does—and what it does not prove
Airport systems support four practical jobs: recording property, organizing it into categories and storage locations, searching records, and helping staff review inquiries. A database can make a large storeroom searchable, but it cannot establish ownership by itself.
In a September 3, 2021 announcement, Denver International Airport described a system this way: “The system will recognize, identify, and categorize the item.” Denver presented that as a description of its system capability. It is not an independently tested recovery rate, match-accuracy statistic or guarantee that an image will identify a particular object.

Likewise, a photo-based suggestion does not mean airports use facial recognition, biometrics or a shared artificial-intelligence platform. The available airport descriptions do not establish a common database, universal data schema, interoperability between airports, a particular AI architecture or a standard accuracy level. Treat every suggested match as a staff-reviewed possibility.
Timing, retention periods and fees are local rules
Airport pages illustrate why a single worldwide deadline is misleading. The following figures apply to the named local processes and can change; check the current page for the airport handling your item.

Retention clocks may start when an item is found, turned in or reported, depending on the airport. The pages also differ on whether an unclaimed object is donated, destroyed, transferred or otherwise disposed of. Never promise a traveler that an item will be held for a particular number of days without checking the applicable policy.

- Desk collection: Bring the requested identification and the report or case number to the specified office during its opening hours.
- Authorized representative: Give another person the authorization details required by that airport. Pearson lists this as an option.
- Courier or postal delivery: Schiphol and Heathrow describe shipment or courier options. The claimant may pay delivery, and the airport may require a waiver, address verification or a third-party shipping arrangement.
- Phone or email coordination: Some offices use these channels to confirm a match or arrange a collection time; use contact details published by the airport, not an unsolicited message.
Airports can impose limits on shipping batteries, liquids, passports, cash or other regulated items. Ask what can legally be sent and what must be collected in person before paying for delivery.

There is no supported basis for ranking commercial products, but travelers and airport managers can evaluate a local process with the same operational questions.

The cited airport pages do not provide comparative performance statistics such as recovery rates, average return times or match accuracy. Those numbers should not be inferred from the presence of a database or image feature.

If your item is not listed or the claim stalls
The item is missing from the online inventory
Check whether the airport warns of an intake delay, then confirm that you used the correct operator. Recheck the description for a different category—for example, a tablet may be recorded as electronics and a bag under luggage. If the stated delay has passed, contact the office with your report number rather than filing duplicates.

The airport says it has no record
Reconstruct the route and contact each responsible operator: airline cabin crew or baggage service, checkpoint security, airport terminal office and transit operator. Ask hotel, rideshare or parking staff if the last confirmed location was outside the airport’s controlled area.
Someone contacts you claiming to have found it
Use only contact details on the airport or airline’s official page. Pearson specifically warns about a scam that demands a report fee; reporting there is free, although shipping may cost money. Do not disclose one-time codes or pay through an unsolicited link.
A possible match is offered but ownership is disputed
Provide distinguishing evidence that was not included in a public description, such as a serial number, a private mark or a dated photograph. A visual similarity alone should not be treated as proof.
A practical checklist before you submit
- Exact last-known place and approximate time
- Flight, gate, seat, baggage belt or transit route
- Detailed description, model, color, size and unique marks
- Serial number, tag number, receipt or prior photograph where available
- Correct operator’s official reporting channel
- Saved case or report number
- Calendar reminder to check after the stated intake delay and before the local retention deadline
- Preferred pickup or shipping method, with awareness of any delivery charge or item restrictions
The dependable mental model is local ownership plus a shared sequence: intake, inventory, report, candidate matching, human verification and return. The airport’s current instructions determine who performs each step, how long records remain available and what a successful handoff requires.
