Air-wrapping stylers use directed airflow to draw hair around a barrel, then shape the section as it dries. They work differently from a traditional curling iron, which forms curls around a heated barrel. The method and timing vary by model: Dyson’s guide starts with damp hair, while Shark’s FlexStyle guide recommends hair that is about 80–90% dry.
What makes an air-wrapping styler curl hair?
An air-wrapping styler directs air along a barrel. With the Dyson Airwrap and Shark FlexStyle examples covered here, that airflow draws the loose ends of a section toward the barrel and wraps the strand around it. The barrel holds the hair in a curled shape while airflow dries it. The user releases the section after drying it and, in the manufacturers’ instructions, applying a cool shot.
Dyson calls the mechanism in its Airwrap the Coanda effect. Its guide explains: “You don’t need to twist the machine, as the Coanda effect will attract and wrap your hair around the barrel.” That description is specific to Dyson’s device; it should not be treated as proof that every air styler uses the same mechanism. Shark’s FlexStyle guide describes its Auto-Wrap Curler as using airflow to pick up and wrap hair automatically.
The practical difference from a conventional curling iron is how the hair is brought into shape. With a conventional iron, the heated barrel is the central styling surface around which the user wraps the hair. With these air-wrapping examples, airflow helps carry the hair around the barrel, and the section is held there while it dries. This is still heat styling: the cited product instructions include heat settings and do not establish that an air styler uses no heat or is incapable of damaging hair.

Why starting dampness and timing matter
These tools are designed to shape a section as it dries, but the manufacturers do not give one shared preparation rule. Dyson’s Airwrap instructions say to begin with damp hair. Shark recommends starting with hair that is slightly damp and approximately 80–90% dry; its guide says hair that is too wet is more difficult to curl. Those directions are model-specific, not interchangeable rules for all air stylers.
The time spent holding a section and using a cool shot also differs. Dyson’s guide says to hold the wrapped section for about 15 seconds or until dry, then use the cold shot for 5–10 seconds. Shark’s FlexStyle guide describes about 10 seconds of styling followed by about 10 seconds of cool shot. Follow the manual for your exact model and attachment rather than averaging the two timings.

A cool shot is part of the release sequence in both cited guides: first hold the wrapped hair in place as directed, then use the cool setting, switch the device off, and release the section. The instructions describe a styling method, not a guaranteed curl duration. They do not establish how long a curl will last on different hair types or in different conditions.

Prepare and style one section at a time. The steps below keep the two manufacturers’ instructions separate because their starting dampness, hold times, and release motions are not identical.

Dyson Airwrap technique in the cited guide
- Start with sectioned, damp hair. Choose the airflow and heat settings for your styling session, following the directions for your Airwrap model and attachment.
- Hold a section near its ends and bring the ends toward the barrel. Wait for the hair to attach rather than twisting the machine around the strand.
- As the hair wraps, move the tool toward your head. Hold the section for about 15 seconds or until it is dry.
- Use the cold shot for 5–10 seconds, then turn the device off and release the curl.
- If you want additional hold, Dyson recommends using a product with hold. Its guide also says a smaller barrel can help create a longer-lasting curl; confirm that any barrel you use is compatible with your model.
Shark FlexStyle technique in the cited guide
- Detangle and section slightly damp hair that is approximately 80–90% dry. Shark’s guide cautions that hair that is too wet is more difficult to curl.
- Take a small section and hold it near the ends. Position those ends at the Auto-Wrap Curler.
- Turn on the recommended high heat and airflow so the ends wrap around the barrel. Move the wand toward your head as the hair continues to wrap.
- Hold for about 10 seconds, then use the cool shot for about 10 seconds.
- Turn the unit off and pull the barrel down to release the section. Shark’s guide mentions setting or holding spray as an option.
If the hair will not wrap around the barrel
Start with the simplest adjustment identified in the manufacturer instructions: use a smaller section. Shark’s guide says, “Smaller sections of hair allow for easier wrapping.” This is a practical first step when the ends do not catch or the section does not wrap readily. It is not a guarantee that every hair type or section will wrap in the same way.
- Check the starting dampness against your model’s directions. For the cited Shark technique, hair that is too wet is more difficult to curl. Dyson’s guide calls for damp hair, so do not substitute Shark’s 80–90% dry instruction as a universal rule.
- Bring the ends close to the barrel. The Dyson instructions describe bringing the ends toward the barrel and allowing the hair to attach; Shark’s guide similarly starts by positioning the ends at its curler.
- Use a smaller section. Shark explicitly recommends smaller sections to make wrapping easier.
- Follow the direction and attachment instructions for the device. Shark’s guide refers to direction-specific barrels. Check the manual for the exact model and attachment rather than assuming every barrel or direction works the same way.
If these steps do not resolve the problem, the cited guides do not establish a single cause or a universal fix. Consult the instructions for your particular attachment and model before changing settings or technique.

What the evidence does—and does not—say about heat and results
Dyson’s product material describes styling damp hair without “extreme heat damage” and includes claims about avoiding heat damage. Those are manufacturer claims, not independent comparative findings established by the guides discussed here. The available manufacturer instructions do not prove that air-wrapping styling is damage-free, suitable for every person, or less damaging than a conventional curling iron in all circumstances.
Likewise, the guides explain how to use their products but do not provide controlled results across hair types. They do not establish a guaranteed curl, a universal hold time, or a ranking for curl quality, styling speed, or damage. The practical advice they support is narrower: use the model-specific preparation and styling sequence, keep the section wrapped for the guide’s stated interval or until dry where instructed, and apply the prescribed cool shot before release.
What to check before choosing or using a tool
- Identify the exact model and attachment. Names such as Airwrap and FlexStyle cover products and configurations whose parts or controls may vary. Verify that a barrel is compatible with the particular generation and market version you own or are considering.
- Read the model’s dampness and timing instructions. The examples here differ, so a technique that matches one guide may not match another device’s directions.
- Know what comes in the specific bundle. The cited material does not establish a universal list of included parts. Check the exact listing for your region rather than assuming a particular barrel or accessory is included.
- Keep performance expectations realistic. Manufacturer directions support a way to create curls; they do not guarantee that a curl will last for a set number of hours or produce the same result for every user.
Dyson Airwrap and Shark FlexStyle are useful examples of how airflow-assisted wrapping is described by manufacturers. The core idea is to let airflow help bring hair around a barrel and to shape the section while it dries. For reliable use, the details that matter most are the instructions for your own device: starting dampness, section size, heat and airflow settings, hold time, cool-shot time, and release method.
