Air pollution can make some flowers harder for bees to locate or recognize by changing the volatile chemicals that carry floral scent through the air. Laboratory and field studies have measured effects on odor recognition, insect visits and pollination-related outcomes. They do not show that pollution makes all bees unable to find all flowers: the result depends on the pollutant, the flower’s scent chemistry, the pollinator and the conditions of exposure.
Why floral scent helps bees find flowers
Flowers release mixtures of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), chemical molecules that travel through the air and form a scent. Bees can use these odors as information: a scent may help a bee locate a flower from a distance, then recognize it more closely. Floral odor is one part of the bee’s search, not the only one. Bees also use visual and other cues, so an altered scent does not by itself mean a flower becomes impossible to find.
A useful way to understand the problem is as disruption of a signal. A flower’s scent is a blend, and its identity can depend on which chemicals are present and their relative amounts. If pollutants remove or transform some components, the remaining odor may carry less reliable information. The scent does not have to disappear entirely for recognition to become more difficult.
How pollution can change a flower’s scent
Reactive pollutants in the air can interact with floral VOCs as the compounds travel away from a flower. Diesel exhaust includes nitrogen oxides, and ground-level ozone is another pollutant studied in this context. These reactions can remove or transform parts of an odor blend, changing the chemical composition that reaches a bee. The central effect is not simply that every pollutant makes every flower smell weaker: some chemicals may be transformed or change in relative abundance, and the outcome depends on the particular compounds involved.

That distinction matters because a bee encounters the scent after it has travelled through the surrounding air. The issue may begin with a change to the flower’s odor before the bee detects it; it is not necessarily a problem with the bee’s nose. Separate experiments are needed to establish whether a pollutant also affects the bee’s sensory organs directly.
What the diesel-exhaust experiment found
In a 2013 controlled laboratory study, Girling and colleagues tested a synthetic blend of eight chemicals associated with oilseed-rape flowers. When the blend was exposed to diesel-polluted air, two components, α-farnesene and α-terpinene, became undetectable within one minute and remained undetectable during the two-hour observation. The researchers identified nitrogen oxides as an important cause of the scent degradation. The study is published in Scientific Reports.
The researchers also trained honeybees to recognize the full synthetic blend. Removing the two affected components reduced the bees’ recognition of the altered blend. This links a measured chemical change to a measured change in learned odor recognition: it shows that changing particular parts of this blend can matter to honeybees doing this recognition task.

The boundaries of the result are as important as the finding. It concerned one synthetic oilseed-rape odor blend, a particular exposure and a laboratory recognition task. It does not demonstrate that diesel exhaust erases the scent of every flower, that bees cannot compensate using other cues, or that every bee will respond in the same way in a landscape. It does show why seemingly small changes in a blend could make an odor a less dependable guide.
Ozone can affect the scent signal, but that is different from harming bee smell
Ozone is relevant in two distinct ways: it can alter chemicals in the air, and researchers can test whether exposure changes a bee’s antennal responses. Those are related questions, but they are not the same mechanism. An antennal response measures activity in the sensory organ; a change to the odor before it reaches the antenna is a change to the signal itself.
A 2016 study measured responses in western honeybee antennae after ozone exposure. The response to the plant volatile (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate decreased, while responses to the two tested floral volatiles, linalool and 2-phenylethanol, did not change. The authors said their results did not provide evidence that damage to the olfactory system impaired honeybee pollination for those two attractive signals. The study, “Ozone Differentially Affects Perception of Plant Volatiles in Western Honey Bees,” appeared in PLOS ONE.

This result argues against treating “ozone affects bees’ sense of smell” as a universal statement. The measured antennal effect differed by compound, and the paper did not establish a general loss of smell or a pollination effect for the two signals that showed no response change. It also does not rule out changes to floral scents caused by ozone in the air. Chemical change to a flower’s odor and direct change to an insect’s sensory response need to be evaluated separately.
Field fumigation links pollution exposure with fewer visits
A 2022 free-air fumigation study tested elevated diesel exhaust and ozone separately and in combination. In the conditions of that field experiment, counts of locally occurring wild and managed insect pollinators were 62–70% lower, and flower visits were 83–90% lower. Three measures of pollination and yield for a self-fertile test plant declined by 14–31%. The abstract attributes the outcomes to changes in groups including bees, flies, moths and butterflies—not to bees alone. The study, “Anthropogenic air pollutants reduce insect-mediated pollination services,” was published in Environmental Pollution.
These figures describe measured differences in that experiment, not a universal decline across bee populations, crops or polluted places. The test used a particular plant and a particular free-air exposure setup; its percentages should stay attached to those conditions. Pollinator counts, visits and pollination or yield measures are also different outcomes. Fewer recorded visits do not mean that the same percentage applies to every pollination measure, which is why the study’s three ranges should not be combined into one general statistic.

The field results matter because they extend the question beyond whether an individual honeybee recognizes an altered odor in a laboratory. They show that exposure can coincide with changes in insect visitation and test-plant pollination measures under field conditions. But the study’s broad insect-group counts and particular experimental context do not establish which effect would occur for every species, flower or landscape.

A 2026 paper applied a perceptual model to published honeybee response datasets and crop scent profiles. The analysis reported that when odor structure crossed a modeled degradation threshold, response rates decreased. Across the datasets used, a 15-degree odor-structure disruption threshold correlated with a 50% decrease in honeybee responses. The paper also found substantial variation between crop scent profiles: canola was especially vulnerable in the analysis, while apple was more resilient. The model analysis appeared in Communications Earth & Environment.

Likewise, the canola–apple contrast is a prediction based on scent profiles and response data; it is not a field comparison showing that pollution reduces pollination by a fixed amount in all canola and apple fields. Its practical contribution is to make variation explicit: the same general pollutant process need not produce the same perceptual outcome for different floral blends.

What the evidence does—and does not—establish
The studies measure different stages of a possible chain of effects. A laboratory blend assay can show that exposure changes particular scent chemicals. A learned-recognition test can show whether bees distinguish an altered odor under its test conditions. Antennal recordings test responses at the sensory organ. Field fumigation can measure visits and pollination-related outcomes in an experimental setting. A perceptual model can estimate how odor-profile changes may relate to response data. None of these outcomes should be substituted for another.
- Supported: Diesel exhaust and ozone can alter floral VOCs, and a changed blend can be harder for honeybees to recognize in a controlled task.
- Supported in one field experiment: Elevated diesel exhaust and ozone were associated with fewer insect pollinators and flower visits, alongside declines in three pollination and yield measures for the test plant.
- Not established as a universal rule: That every bee loses the ability to find flowers, that every flower scent is equally susceptible, or that every polluted landscape experiences the field study’s percentage changes.
- Not interchangeable: A chemical change to a flower’s odor does not automatically mean direct damage to a bee’s olfactory system.
The most defensible answer to “Can air pollution stop bees from finding flowers?” is therefore that it can disrupt scent cues and make some odors harder to recognize, with measured effects on visits and pollination in a particular field experiment. The available findings do not support saying that bees generally become unable to find flowers. Outcomes vary with the pollutant, the compounds in a flower’s scent, the pollinator and the exposure setting.
How to interpret a claim about pollution and pollination
When evaluating a headline or statistic, check what was actually measured. “Scent changed,” “bee recognition fell,” “antenna response changed,” and “flower visits fell” describe different observations. A result about one is not automatically evidence for all the others. The study’s species, plant, pollutant exposure and experimental conditions also determine how far its conclusion can be extended.

- Check whether the pollinators counted were honeybees, bees more broadly, or multiple insect groups.
- Keep reported percentages attached to the study and its test conditions rather than applying them to all bees or regions.
- Ask whether the comparison concerns one flower scent or multiple plant species; scent chemistry can change the predicted vulnerability.
- Distinguish a model prediction from a field measurement, and a laboratory result from an outcome observed among visiting insects.
These distinctions help translate the science without overstating it. The studies support concern about a plausible route from pollution to disrupted floral communication and, in a field setting, altered visitation and pollination measures. They leave open how large or frequent such effects are across other species and environments.
