AI learning platforms are changing high school by adding adaptive practice, conversational tutoring, and progress information to instruction. But those features do not prove that students learn more. Results vary by tool and setting, and the strongest case for adoption depends on curriculum fit, teacher oversight, and evidence for the specific students and outcomes a school cares about.
What counts as an AI learning platform?
The label covers different kinds of software, not one uniform product. Some platforms guide students through sequenced lessons and practice, adjusting what comes next based on responses. Others let students ask questions in an open-ended conversation. Some combine tutoring functions with teacher-facing progress information.
The distinction matters: a guided mathematics sequence and a general-purpose chatbot do not teach in the same way, even if both use AI. OECD describes systems that can cycle through instruction, practice, immediate feedback, and adaptive progression, as well as conversational assistants that respond to a student’s prompts. OECD’s 2025 report names Khan Academy, BrainPOP, Carnegie Learning’s MATHia, and Rori as examples of distinct approaches, not as interchangeable or equally validated products.

UNESCO describes Khan Academy as a nonprofit learning platform with materials in mathematics, science, computing, and humanities. Its profile reports that the platform reaches learners in over 190 countries and is localized into 50+ languages; it describes Khanmigo as an AI-powered assistant for tutoring, feedback, and lesson planning. Those are organization-profile figures and a product description, not independent evidence that the tools improve learning. UNESCO’s profile provides that context.

How are these tools changing high school learning?
They can make practice and feedback available through software and give teachers another way to view student progress. In a guided system, a student may receive an immediate response and continue through a sequence at a pace shaped by their answers. In a conversational tutor, a student can ask for help in their own words. These interactions may supplement instruction, but they do not replace a teacher’s knowledge of the class, curriculum, or individual student’s circumstances.
For some students, asking a question privately to a tool may feel less exposing than asking in front of classmates. In trials of Khanmigo discussed by OECD, students described reduced “evaluation apprehension” and said they felt safer asking AI questions they considered “stupid” than asking a teacher. This is a reported qualitative benefit in particular trials, not evidence that every student will feel this way or learn more as a result. Sal Khan, Khan Academy’s founder, told the UNESCO Courier in 2023, “Generative AI is not always right, and it can sometimes make up facts.” He said many Khanmigo interactions are anchored in Khan Academy information to reduce the likelihood of the tool going beyond it; that is his explanation, not an independent audit of current accuracy. Do AI tutors actually help high school students learn?
There is no single answer across platforms, subjects, and ways of measuring learning. The OECD’s 2026 Digital Education Outlook characterizes results as heterogeneous, from accelerated mastery to skill degradation, and warns that generative AI without suitable guardrails can create a high risk of cognitive offloading: students may let the tool do thinking they need to practice themselves.

What one comparison suggests—and does not
The Outlook describes a study of nearly 1,000 high-school mathematics students comparing a standard GPT model with a pedagogically engineered tutor. It says the engineered tutor mitigated the harm but did not produce the artificial performance boost seen in the standard-model group. This is evidence about a particular comparison and student group, not a result that applies to every AI platform or high-school subject. Performance while using a tool should not automatically be treated as evidence of learning that students can demonstrate independently.

What classroom trials found
OECD reports mixed quantitative results from Khanmigo classroom trials, alongside strong qualitative benefits. Some trials found “no statistically significant difference” in short-term test scores compared with standard web search. That finding does not establish that the tools have no effect in other settings, nor does a positive experience alone establish a test-score gain. The results concern those trials and outcomes, rather than all students or long-term learning.
Why the tested version matters
OECD’s 2025 report cautions that much evidence on generative AI reflects models that have since been discontinued or updated. A study of an older model cannot establish how a current product performs without checking the version tested and the conditions of use. The cited evidence does not establish a general causal effect size for AI learning platforms across high-school subjects.

What should schools check before adopting an AI tutor?
A school should evaluate the instructional approach as well as the software. A tool that fits one course, age group, or learning goal may be a poor fit for another. Use a pilot to answer specific questions about the intended students and curriculum rather than treating a feature list or vendor claim as proof of impact.
- Instructional design: Is the tool a structured, sequenced learning path or open-ended chat? Does its interaction prompt students to explain and practice, or supply answers too readily?
- Curriculum and subject fit: Does its content align with the course, the concepts being taught, and the level of challenge students need?
- Relevant evidence: Look for results involving a similar age group, subject, setting, comparison, and outcome. Separate short-term test scores, student perceptions, and progress inside the platform; they answer different questions.
- Teacher oversight: Can teachers understand what students are doing and intervene when needed? Decide how the tool fits into instruction rather than assuming it can operate independently.
- Implementation: Set expectations for when students use the platform, how teachers introduce it, and how the school will judge whether it is helping. A one-off trial may not show what sustained classroom use would do.
- Data practices: Determine what student information is collected, who can access it, how it is used, and what agreement governs it. Review the actual terms and school arrangements rather than relying on a general description of the product.
There is no complete independent head-to-head comparison of current vendors established by the cited sources. Schools should therefore compare candidates against their own learning goals and verify claims in the intended context, including which model or product version is being evaluated.

What does FERPA mean for student data?
For U.S. schools, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) generally bars disclosure of personally identifiable information from education records without written consent, subject to conditional exceptions. The U.S. Department of Education explains that the school-official and study exceptions have specific requirements. A vendor’s educational purpose alone does not establish that an exception applies. The Department’s privacy and data-sharing guidance outlines the framework.
One example is the study exception. The Department says an educational agency or institution may disclose personally identifiable information without consent to an organization conducting a qualifying study for or on its behalf, including a study to improve instruction. A written agreement must specify the study’s purpose and the use and destruction of the information. This is a specific, conditional exception—not blanket permission for any educational app or vendor. Schools should examine the facts and applicable agreement before sharing student data. Is AI adoption a federal requirement?
No. In an announcement dated July 22, 2025, the U.S. Department of Education described guidance and proposed grant priorities that included AI-enhanced high-impact tutoring and AI use for individualized learning. The announcement also emphasized parent and teacher engagement and privacy. It describes federal guidance and a proposed priority at that date, not a mandate for every school to adopt AI. How to judge whether a platform is working
Start by naming the intended outcome: for example, stronger independent problem-solving in a particular course, rather than “more personalized learning.” Then establish what students will do with the tool, what teachers will monitor, and what evidence would count as improvement. Include checks that distinguish work completed with AI assistance from what students can explain or solve on their own.
Interpret results in context. A student may value low-pressure access to help even when short-term test scores do not change; conversely, increased activity or better performance during tool use does not by itself show durable learning. A useful evaluation connects the platform’s design and use to a defined instructional goal, while keeping teachers responsible for deciding when its feedback is appropriate.
