The safest way to price a GPU contract is to build it from measured GPU-hours, not from a provider’s headline hourly rate. Benchmark representative jobs, separate training from inference, and price three cases—on-demand, Spot or preemptible, and committed use. Then add the host machine, storage, networking, operations, support, taxes and currency exposure.

A contract is a utilization bet. A 50% discount can still cost more than on-demand if your team uses only half the committed hours, while Spot pricing can be economical only when checkpointing and retry capacity are engineered in. The worksheet below turns your workload into a defensible monthly and annual estimate and exposes the terms that should be negotiated before signing.

What your estimate must measure

Estimate the cost of a successful training run or a defined volume of inference, not just the cost of a GPU instance. Your model should answer four questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • How many GPU-hours will the workload require at the required GPU memory, interconnect and host-resource level?
  • What is the effective cost under on-demand, Spot or preemptible, one-year and three-year scenarios?
  • How much capacity will actually be consumed after ramp delays, idle periods, retries and outages?
  • What happens if demand is lower, higher or technically different from the forecast?

Keep training, batch inference and online inference as separate workload classes. Training often needs high utilization and long uninterrupted runs; online inference may need headroom for traffic spikes and a service-level guarantee. Combining them into one average can hide an expensive mismatch.

Step 1: Benchmark the real workload

Run representative jobs before asking for a long-term quote. A short benchmark on a small sample is useful only if it reflects production behavior: the same model family, precision, data pipeline, checkpoint frequency and distributed-training topology.

Record these measurements

  • GPU type, count and memory per GPU.
  • Wall-clock runtime from job start to successful completion.
  • Average and tail GPU utilization, including data-loader or communication stalls.
  • Restart, retry and preemption overhead.
  • Checkpoint size, frequency and restore time.
  • Growth of attached disks, snapshots and object storage.
  • Inter-region and internet data transfer, including traffic to users or another cloud.
  • Host vCPU and RAM consumption, orchestration time, logging and monitoring volume.

Measure enough runs to capture variance. A single fastest run is a poor basis for a commitment because queueing, data preparation and failed jobs consume billable time too.

Keep job classes separate

Create a row for each recurring job class: full training, fine-tuning, batch inference, online inference and evaluation. Note interruption tolerance for each row. A fine-tuning job that checkpoints every few minutes can often use Spot capacity; a latency-sensitive endpoint may need on-demand or reserved capacity.

Step 2: Convert demand to GPU-hours

Normalize every forecast to the same unit:

GPU-hours = GPU count × elapsed hours per run × number of runs

For example, 8 GPUs running for 12 hours across 20 runs require 8 × 12 × 20 = 1,920 GPU-hours. Keep the calculation per job class and per region. Do not replace measured elapsed time with theoretical utilization: a GPU that is busy 70% of the time is still billed for the full elapsed hour.

Account for overhead explicitly

Add a measured allowance for queueing, startup, checkpointing, retries and interruptions. If Spot testing shows that a class of jobs averages one restart per ten runs, include the extra GPU-hours rather than treating the interruption as free. For online inference, model the minimum always-on fleet separately from burst capacity.

Use a conservative utilization range instead of one point estimate. A practical worksheet has low, base and high demand columns and records both planned GPU-hours and the percentage of committed hours expected to be consumed.

Step 3: Price on-demand, Spot and commitments

Apply the rate for the exact region, machine type and GPU configuration. Google Cloud notes that “Each GPU adds to the cost of your instance in addition to the cost of the machine type,” so a GPU price alone is not an instance quote.

Pricing case How to model it Best fit Main risk
On-demand Measured GPU-hours × current regional on-demand rate, plus the host VM and other SKUs Uncertain demand, prototypes, urgent capacity Highest unit price and possible capacity shortages
Spot or preemptible GPU-hours × current dynamic Spot rate, plus a measured interruption and retry allowance Checkpointed training, batch inference and flexible experiments Interruption, capacity loss and variable price
One-year commitment Committed hourly rate × committed hours, whether used or not, plus fixed and variable charges Predictable baseline demand Paying for unused capacity and limited flexibility
Three-year commitment Long-term quote × committed hours, with the same utilization and fixed-charge analysis Stable, well-understood multi-year demand Model, region or architecture changes can strand the commitment

Published rate examples

Published prices are regional and availability-dependent; obtain a dated quote before using them in a contract model.

Provider and configuration On-demand One-year or Spot Three-year or Spot Qualification
Google Cloud T4 $0.35 per GPU-hour $0.22 per GPU-hour on a one-year commitment $0.16 per GPU-hour on a three-year commitment Illustrative rates listed on the provider’s GPU pricing page; region applies
CoreWeave NVIDIA HGX H100, 8 GPUs $49.24 per system-hour $19.71 per system-hour Spot Not stated Published North America table; divide by eight only for a rough per-GPU comparison
CoreWeave NVIDIA A100, 8 GPUs $21.60 per system-hour $9.65 per system-hour Spot Not stated Published North America table; verify region and availability

The H100 figures above equal approximately $6.16 per GPU-hour on demand and $2.46 on Spot when divided by eight. That arithmetic does not make the configurations equivalent: memory, interconnect, host resources, storage and service terms must also match.

Google Cloud says Spot prices are dynamic and can provide 60–91% discounts for most machine types and GPUs. Its committed-use documentation says most GPU types can receive up to 55% off on-demand prices, with some types eligible for up to 65%. AWS documents savings of up to 72% for Savings Plans and up to 90% for Spot versus On-Demand, while its Capacity Blocks can reserve GPU instances in advance for machine-learning training, fine-tuning, experiments, prototypes and demand spikes. These are published maximums, not guaranteed rates for your region or configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 4: Add every non-GPU charge

Request a bill of materials that names every SKU. The effective rate is the total bill divided by successful work, not the GPU line alone.

  • Host compute: vCPU, RAM, the VM or bare-metal system, operating-system charges and any minimum host allocation.
  • Storage: boot and attached disks, snapshots, checkpoint repositories, object storage, replication and lifecycle-retention charges.
  • Networking: inter-zone or inter-region transfer, internet egress, private connectivity, load balancers and ingress or gateway services.
  • Orchestration: cluster managers, schedulers, container control planes and idle management nodes.
  • Operations: logs, metrics, traces, artifact registries, security scanning and backup services.
  • Support: support plans, premium response tiers and any minimum support spend.
  • Commercial adjustments: taxes, local surcharges, committed-use fees and foreign-exchange movements if the quote and your budget use different currencies.

Checkpoint traffic deserves special attention. A large model saved frequently can create both storage growth and network charges, especially when checkpoints cross regions. Put a retention policy and restore test into the cost model rather than assuming that object storage is negligible.

Step 5: Calculate commitment break-even

For a commitment with effective hourly price C and on-demand price O, the simple break-even utilization is:

break-even utilization ≈ C ÷ O

Using the published Google Cloud T4 examples, a one-year rate of $0.22 versus $0.35 on demand breaks even at about 63% utilization. The three-year rate of $0.16 breaks even at about 46%. These percentages exclude fixed host charges, storage, support and the value of guaranteed capacity, so calculate a second break-even using the complete bill.

Committed-use fees continue even when resources are unused. Google states that after a commitment becomes active, the discounted prices are paid hourly until the end date regardless of whether the resources are used. Model unused committed hours as a real expense, not as a theoretical discount left on the table.

Illustrative monthly arithmetic

For orientation only, running an eight-GPU H100 system continuously for an illustrative 730-hour month at the published $49.24 system-hour rate would be 49.24 × 730 = $35,945.20 before host, storage, networking, support and taxes. At the published $19.71 Spot rate, the same uninterrupted arithmetic is 19.71 × 730 = $14,388.30, but Spot interruptions and unavailable capacity mean the workload may not complete in 730 billable hours. Treat these as calculation examples, not a quote or a forecast.

Step 6: Stress-test demand before signing

Build a scenario table that changes both workload and contract assumptions.

Scenario Demand changes Operational tests Contract question
Low Delayed launch, fewer customers, 30-day and 90-day ramp How many committed hours sit idle? Can capacity be resized, transferred or reduced?
Base Measured GPU-hours and expected growth Normal utilization and checkpoint rate Does the quote cover every SKU?
High More users, larger model or extra training runs Burst capacity, queue time and regional availability Can you burst on demand without losing the discount?
Failure Regional outage, GPU substitution or Spot interruption Recovery time, data movement and alternate region What capacity and support guarantees are written?

Change one assumption at a time and then run a combined downside case: a 90-day ramp delay, lower utilization, a model-size increase and a regional outage. Include an exit or resize plan before approval. A discount that is attractive only in the high-demand case is not a safe minimum-spend commitment.

When Spot capacity is reliable enough

Spot is a pricing mechanism, not a reliability guarantee. It is suitable when the application can lose and recreate capacity without losing expensive progress.

Required engineering controls

  • Checkpoint to durable storage at a frequency that limits lost work.
  • Make jobs restartable and idempotent; automate detection of interruption and resubmission.
  • Keep a capacity fallback, such as on-demand instances or another region.
  • Track interruption rates, queue time and completion cost by GPU type and region.
  • For distributed training, test what happens when one worker disappears and whether the framework can resume consistently.

Compare Spot by cost per successful run, not cost per allocated hour. A lower hourly rate can lose its advantage when retries, idle workers and extra storage traffic are included.

Compare equivalent capacity, not labels

Before comparing two hourly numbers, normalize the technical and commercial package:

  • GPU memory capacity and memory bandwidth.
  • Interconnect type and topology for multi-GPU training.
  • GPU count and whether the price is per GPU or per complete system.
  • vCPU, RAM, local disk and network bandwidth.
  • Region, zone availability and data-egress route.
  • Expected utilization, interruption behavior and capacity guarantee.
  • Storage, orchestration, support and service-level terms.

Report at least two outcome metrics: effective cost per successful training run and effective cost per million inferences. A provider with a higher GPU rate may be cheaper if its interconnect shortens training or if fewer retries are required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Contract due-diligence checklist

Ask for a dated, itemized quote and have the vendor confirm each answer in writing.

  1. Which region and zones are covered, and is a reservation required to obtain the quoted price?
  2. Is the rate per GPU, VM, eight-GPU system or another unit?
  3. Which host CPU, RAM, disk and network SKUs are mandatory?
  4. Are Spot prices dynamic, and what interruption notice, capacity behavior and retry expectations apply?
  5. What are the minimum spend, committed hours and payment schedule?
  6. Can unused commitment be resized, transferred, exchanged or canceled?
  7. What are the renewal date, automatic-renewal rule and termination charges?
  8. Can you burst above the commitment, and at what rate?
  9. How are inter-region transfer, internet egress, snapshots and support billed?
  10. What capacity, response-time and outage remedies are included in the service level?
  11. Which taxes and currency-conversion rules apply to your billing entity?
  12. What happens if the required GPU is replaced, unavailable or discontinued?

Have finance, engineering and legal review the same worksheet. Engineering validates performance and recovery assumptions; finance validates utilization and currency exposure; legal validates minimums, renewal, cancellation, data-transfer and support language.

A practical worksheet layout

Create one row per workload and columns for GPU type, GPU count, runtime, runs per month, measured utilization, restart allowance, GPU-hours, pricing case, host cost, storage, network, operations, support, taxes and total. Add columns for low, base and high demand and for 30-day and 90-day ramp delays.

At the bottom, calculate:

  • Total monthly and annual spend by pricing case.
  • Cost per successful training run and per million inferences.
  • Committed hours, used hours and unused-hour cost.
  • Break-even utilization after fixed charges.
  • Cash exposure if demand falls to the low case.
  • Additional cost of a region failure, Spot retry or model-size increase.

Do not sign until the high case has a capacity path and the low case has an affordable exit. The final decision should be based on the complete effective-cost range and the contract’s flexibility, not on the largest advertised percentage discount.
