AI smart glasses process information differently depending on what you ask them to do. In Meta’s description of a visual question, the glasses capture a photo, convert your spoken request to text, and send the image and text to an AI model to generate an answer. Meta says some basic commands can run on the glasses, while advanced AI features use cloud computing. That is one product example, not a rule for every pair of smart glasses.
What happens when you ask a visual question?
For a visual question on Meta AI glasses, the wearer speaks a request and the glasses take a photo. Speech recognition turns the spoken words into text; Meta says the image and text are then passed to an AI model. The model combines the inputs to produce a response, which Meta says can be delivered through the glasses’ speakers and the accompanying app. Meta describes this flow in its Multimodal generative AI systems system card.
For example, a request that asks about an object in front of you needs more than the spoken words: the image supplies visual context, and the transcribed request tells the model what to look for. This is a multimodal interaction because the system combines different kinds of input. Meta’s system card describes the general process, but it is a vendor explanation rather than an independent technical audit.

The sequence is useful to understand because “the glasses recorded me” and “the glasses sent a picture for this request” are not interchangeable descriptions. A particular AI interaction may capture an image for processing without implying that every moment is being continuously recorded. At the same time, the processing of a request can involve information about people other than the wearer if they are visible or audible.

Which tasks happen on the glasses and which use the cloud?
Processing location depends on the feature. Meta Engineering said in a post dated 23 September 2026 that many basic directions, such as placing a call or answering a text hands-free, can happen entirely on the device. More advanced AI features need models too large to run on the glasses and therefore use cloud computing. These statements apply to Meta’s products and the functions described; they should not be generalized to other manufacturers or every feature on Meta glasses.
| Task or data | What the available Meta description says | What that means for the wearer |
|---|---|---|
| Basic hands-free commands | Meta Engineering says many basic directions, including placing a call or answering a text, can run entirely on the glasses. | A cloud connection is not required for every voice-controlled function. |
| Advanced AI feature | Meta says these features require cloud compute because the models are too large for the glasses. | Do not assume that an AI answer is generated locally just because the request begins on the glasses. |
| Visual question | Meta’s system card describes a captured image and speech-recognition text being passed to an AI model. | The request can involve both image and voice-derived data; the exact processing location depends on the feature. |
| Gallery photo or video | Meta’s July 2026 FAQ says gallery captures stay on the glasses until the wearer imports them to a phone. | This statement concerns gallery storage; it does not establish where every AI request is processed or what happens after import or sharing. |
The distinction between local gallery storage and cloud-based AI processing matters. Meta’s FAQ describes where gallery photos and videos are stored before import; its engineering post describes the compute needed for advanced AI features. Those are different stages and different kinds of data handling. Local storage of gallery media does not mean that every AI request stays on the glasses, and cloud processing for a feature does not by itself establish that every saved gallery item is uploaded automatically.
Meta’s Private Processing claim
In September 2026, Meta announced Private Processing for glasses. Meta describes the system as using confidential virtual machines intended to prevent Meta from accessing data while it is being processed. This is the company’s description of its privacy design; the available sources do not independently verify its deployment or test that guarantee. Treat it as a vendor claim, and check the current explanation for your model, location, and software version before relying on it.
What is stored, shared, or used for AI?
Meta’s July 2026 product FAQ says photos and videos in the glasses’ gallery remain stored privately on the glasses until the wearer imports them to a phone. It says users choose whether to share those items or use Meta AI. This is a specific claim about gallery captures and user choices. It is not a blanket statement about the handling of every voice interaction, AI request, cloud feature, later import, or sharing action.

Separate questions apply to what happens to information after an AI interaction, including whether a voice recording or other data is retained, how it is used, and what deletion controls apply. Meta’s responsible-innovation guidance says users can delete voice recordings and that, once information is deleted, it will not be used for future training. Meta’s system card says deleting media from the gallery also deletes it from Meta’s cloud. These descriptions should be read as Meta’s stated controls and deletion behavior, not as an independent audit.
Meta’s Responsible Innovation in AI Glasses & Quest page says the Meta AI app provides preferences for captures, voice, and notifications, along with controls for information shared with Meta. The names and availability of settings can change by model, software version, and location. Consult the current app and product help for the glasses you own rather than assuming every option is present in every region.
How to review privacy settings and reduce data sharing
Use the product’s current app and help materials to verify what each control changes. A setting that limits voice features may affect the assistant, while capture preferences may govern different behavior; avoid assuming that one switch controls every data flow.

- Check voice controls on the glasses. Meta’s system card says turning voice controls off is an available way to stop using Meta AI. Confirm the option and its effects for your specific glasses and region.
- Review gallery media before importing or sharing. Meta says gallery photos and videos remain on the glasses until import to a phone. Choose whether to import, share, or use an item with Meta AI rather than assuming those actions are automatic.
- Use the product’s deletion controls when needed. Meta describes deletion options for voice recordings and gallery media. Check what item is being deleted and the product’s current explanation of the effect.
- Limit unnecessary app permissions. The Swiss Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner advises users to check app permissions and refuse access that is not needed for the intended function.
These steps do not guarantee that every piece of data is handled identically across features. If a specific function matters to you, check its current product documentation for what it captures, where it is processed, how long information is retained, and whether it can be used beyond providing the requested service.

What do nearby people need to know?
Smart glasses can collect information about bystanders through both cameras and microphones. A photo may include a person’s face or surroundings; audio can capture speech or other identifying details. The Swiss Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner warns that camera- and microphone-equipped wearables can process third-party data and says discreet smart glasses increase the risk that people are recorded or their information transmitted without their knowledge.
Meta says a white capture LED blinks briefly for a photo and remains on continuously during video capture. The company also says that covering or disabling the light automatically disables the camera. This indicator is a notice feature, not proof that everyone nearby noticed it, agreed to recording, or has no legal objection. Meta’s responsible-use guidance recommends asking people nearby before capturing and avoiding sensitive places or settings where people expect privacy.
The practical point is to treat the camera and microphone as ways of collecting information about everyone within range, not only the wearer. Give people notice and respect objections, especially in private or sensitive settings. A visible indicator can help communicate that capture is occurring, but it does not settle whether a particular recording is lawful.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

There is no single rule that applies everywhere. Requirements can depend on jurisdiction, location, purpose, the people recorded, and what happens to the information afterward. Two official assessments illustrate why local guidance matters; neither is a universal rule for every product or country.

Singapore: public recording and subsequent use
In a parliamentary response dated 6 May 2026, Singapore’s Ministry of Digital Development and Information said the Personal Data Protection Act generally does not require consent for photography or recording in public spaces. It also said organizations must ensure that subsequent use or disclosure—including use for AI features—has a reasonable purpose and complies with other laws. The response noted that non-consensual recording, sharing, or misuse of intimate or private content may be criminal. The statement concerns Singapore’s legal framework, not the rules elsewhere.
Hamburg: a review of one glasses model
On 10 September 2026, Hamburg’s Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information announced a review of Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer Gen 1. The authority concluded that recording people outside a close circle of friends and family would generally not be permissible under its assessment, except in rare legitimate-interest cases, because informed consent could not realistically be obtained due to a lack of transparency. It also concluded that there would typically be no legal basis for Meta AI training. This was the authority’s assessment of a specific model and legal context, not a universal ruling on all smart glasses or jurisdictions.
For a real situation, consult the relevant privacy regulator or legal guidance for your location and consider both recording and later use or disclosure. The Swiss authority also advises users to understand where wearable data is processed and whether it may be used for purposes beyond providing the requested service.

Before using a feature that captures voice or images, look for answers to these concrete questions in the documentation for your exact model and region:
- Which voice commands and visual questions are handled locally, and which are sent to cloud services?
- Does the feature take a new image or use existing gallery media?
- When do photos or videos leave the glasses, and what action triggers import, upload, or sharing?
- Are voice transcripts, recordings, or AI requests retained, and can they be used for model improvement?
- Can you turn off voice features, delete recordings, delete gallery items, or manage information shared with the provider?
- How is recording signaled to people nearby, and what does the indicator actually mean?
- Do feature availability and controls change with the model, software version, or country?
If the product documentation does not answer a question, do not infer the answer from a different model or from a general statement about local storage. Ask the manufacturer or avoid that feature when the missing detail is material to your privacy decision.
