An AI shopping agent turns a request such as “best running shoes under $100” into a search, a set of product choices and—if the retailer and service support it—a checkout flow. It does not follow one universal design: some assistants only research and compare, while others can assemble a cart or pass an order to a merchant. Even when checkout appears inside a chat, the retailer’s systems generally remain responsible for the order, payment and fulfillment.
What an AI shopping agent does
“AI shopping agent” can mean several different levels of assistance. At the simplest level, an assistant interprets a shopping request and helps find or compare products. A more integrated version may create or update a cart. A checkout-enabled version can send the selected items and purchase details to a merchant and display the resulting checkout in the assistant. The label alone does not tell you which capabilities are available.
The distinction matters because product recommendations, cart contents and confirmed orders are different things. A product appearing in an answer does not mean it is in stock, reserved, or ready to buy. A cart is not necessarily an accepted order, and a checkout screen inside a chat does not mean the assistant has become the retailer or taken over fulfillment. The specific service, merchant integration, region and account determine what happens.

The useful point is that a shopper can state a goal and constraints in ordinary language rather than beginning with a retailer’s exact product category or model name.

How a request becomes a product shortlist
1. The shopper states a need
A request may include a budget, intended use, preference or recipient. The assistant interprets the wording and may use the stated constraints to guide discovery. Different assistants may ask follow-up questions or make assumptions in different ways; no one behavior is guaranteed across all products. If a recommendation depends on an unstated detail—such as sizing, compatibility or delivery timing—the shopper should clarify it before choosing.
2. The assistant retrieves product information
Product discovery depends on information the assistant can access. In OpenAI’s documented merchant setup, merchants provide structured product feeds. These can include product identifiers, descriptions, prices, inventory, media and fulfillment information. The feed gives the system product facts to work with; it does not itself guarantee that a particular item will appear or that the information remains current between updates.
That makes catalog quality operationally important. A missing identifier can make it harder to distinguish variants. Out-of-date inventory or price information can make a promising result unsuitable at checkout. Descriptions and images help characterize an item, while fulfillment information can affect whether it can be delivered in a way that meets the shopper’s needs. The merchant’s checkout response remains the place to confirm the purchase details.
3. Candidates are compared and ranked
OpenAI says ChatGPT shopping results surface relevant products from across the web. Its September 2025 announcement says the results are organic and unsponsored, and describes ranking factors when multiple merchants sell the same product: availability, price, quality, whether the merchant is the primary seller, and whether Instant Checkout is supported. Those are OpenAI’s statements about its own product, not a universal formula for shopping agents or an independent finding about how every result is ranked.
For a shopper, a shortlist is a starting point rather than a purchase guarantee. Compare the exact model and variant, seller, current price, availability and delivery terms on the details shown before checkout. Similar product names can refer to different versions, and a recommendation may not expose every factor that matters to an individual buyer. The merchant’s authoritative cart information is what matters once the purchase is assembled.

What happens between selection and payment
4. A checkout session is created
In OpenAI’s documented checkout flow, the assistant calls a merchant endpoint to create a checkout session for the selected items. It may pass along buyer or fulfillment context needed for that session. This is a handoff to the merchant’s system, not the assistant independently placing an order based only on the conversational answer.
If the shopper changes an item, shipping choice or discount, the assistant can update the session. The merchant returns the complete cart state so it can be displayed and checked. That returned state can include the items, prices, taxes or fees, shipping, discounts, total and status. Because the merchant supplies these details, an assistant should not be treated as the definitive source for the final charge simply because it previously summarized a price.

Before confirming, check that the cart contains the intended products and variants, and review the seller, quantities, delivery details, discounts, charges and total. If something changes during checkout, use the updated merchant-provided cart state rather than relying on an earlier estimate in the conversation. A displayed total is meaningful only in the context of the items and fulfillment choices that produced it.
OpenAI’s September 29, 2025 launch post said eligible Instant Checkout purchases could be completed without leaving ChatGPT after the shopper confirmed the order, shipping and payment details. At launch, OpenAI described availability for U.S. ChatGPT Plus, Pro and Free users buying from U.S. Etsy sellers, and said more than a million Shopify merchants were expected to come later. These were dated launch statements, not a complete or verified availability list for October 2026. Availability can vary by merchant, region, account and feature.

6. The merchant validates and processes the order
OpenAI’s technical documentation describes the merchant as validating the request, determining fulfillment, calculating charges, assessing payment and risk signals, and accepting or declining the order using its own systems. The merchant processes payment through its existing payment service provider. In other words, the assistant can provide the interface and coordinate the exchange, while the merchant’s system decides whether the order can be accepted and records its payment and fulfillment state.
OpenAI summarized its arrangement this way in its September 2025 announcement: “Orders, payments, and fulfillment are handled by the merchant using their existing systems.” That sentence describes OpenAI’s product model. It should not be generalized into a guarantee about every service called an AI shopping agent.

A useful commerce integration has to keep the assistant’s view aligned with the merchant’s order record after checkout. OpenAI’s checkout specification describes merchant webhooks for events such as order creation and updates. Those events let the chat interface reflect changes from the merchant instead of treating the conversation as the only record of what happened.
Post-purchase support can include confirmation, order changes, cancellation, fulfillment updates, returns and customer service. Google describes its Universal Commerce Protocol as covering discovery, buying and post-purchase support. In either case, those capabilities depend on the merchant’s records and the integration’s defined messages; a conversational assistant cannot infer reliable order status merely from what it said before purchase.

If an order issue arises, the shopper should use the confirmation and order information supplied by the merchant or the service’s stated support path. The assistant may help surface or relay information when an integration supports it, but the merchant remains the relevant source for its order, payment and fulfillment decisions under the OpenAI model described above.

Protocol names describe different parts of the shopping relationship, not interchangeable versions of one standard. Their announced scope can be compared by what they connect, what part of the journey they address and what their publishers say about payment or trust.
| Protocol | Publisher-described scope | What it addresses | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) | OpenAI describes ACP as a connective layer between merchants and ChatGPT users. | OpenAI materials cover structured catalog ingestion and merchant checkout endpoints. | This describes the OpenAI integration model; it does not establish that all assistants use ACP. |
| Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) | Google describes UCP as an open standard for a common language across discovery, buying and post-purchase support. | Google’s January 11, 2026 announcement says it was co-developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart, and lists additional ecosystem supporters. | The participants and scope are claims in Google’s protocol announcement, not proof of universal adoption or interoperability. |
| Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) | Google describes AP2 as supporting agent purchases under user-defined constraints. | It uses digital mandates intended to create a verifiable record linking the user, merchant and payment processor. | Google’s May 19, 2026 announcement said it would begin bringing AP2 to its products in the coming months, starting with Gemini Spark. That future-tense announcement does not establish that a particular feature is live. |
| Visa Trusted Agent Protocol | Visa describes a framework for agent-merchant communication and verification. | Visa’s October 14, 2025 announcement, developed with Cloudflare, says the protocol is based on HTTP Message Signatures and aligned with WebAuthn. | This is Visa’s description of its protocol, not evidence that merchants universally use it or that it is an industry-wide safeguard. |
The distinction between checkout and payment authorization is especially important. ACP materials describe product data and merchant checkout interactions. UCP is presented by Google as spanning the broader shopping journey. AP2 focuses on purchase constraints and payment-related authorization records. Visa’s Trusted Agent Protocol focuses on trust and verification during agent-merchant interactions. These sources do not establish that the protocols are equivalent or broadly interoperable.
Google VP and GM of Ads and Commerce Vidhya Srinivasan described UCP in Google’s January 11, 2026 announcement as “a new open standard for agentic commerce that works across the entire shopping journey — from discovery and buying to post-purchase support.” This is Google’s characterization of UCP’s intended reach, not a neutral definition accepted by every provider.

What payment controls and trust mechanisms can—and cannot—tell you
Google presents AP2 as a way to support purchases under constraints set by the user, with digital mandates intended to connect the user, merchant and payment processor in a verifiable record. That is a protocol approach to expressing and recording authorization; it is not evidence that every agent purchase has the same controls or that every merchant has implemented AP2.
Visa presents Trusted Agent Protocol as a way for agents and merchants to establish trust during interactions. Its October 14, 2025 announcement names HTTP Message Signatures and alignment with WebAuthn. Those technical elements belong to Visa’s protocol description; they should not be mistaken for a completed, universal security standard across commerce or a substitute for evaluating an individual merchant’s checkout and account protections.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a shopper, the practical check is still to review the purchase before confirming and to rely on the merchant’s confirmed order and payment state afterward. A protocol announcement explains a proposed or implemented technical framework; it does not, by itself, prove the security or availability of a particular shopping flow.
How to judge an agent-assisted purchase
- Before selecting: Make important constraints explicit, such as budget, intended use, compatible model, size or delivery timing. Do not assume an assistant has inferred a preference you did not state.
- When comparing: Check that the listed product and variant match what you want, and pay attention to the seller and current availability.
- At checkout: Review the merchant-returned cart, including quantities, shipping, taxes or fees, discounts and total. Treat earlier conversational prices as provisional if the cart has changed.
- Before confirming: Ensure you understand which merchant is taking the order and what shipping and payment details will be used.
- After purchase: Keep the merchant’s confirmation and use its order record or stated support route for status, changes, cancellation, fulfillment or returns.
These checks are useful because an agent’s conversational fluency and its transactional authority are separate. The assistant may help interpret and organize choices, but product data, cart totals, acceptance, payment and fulfillment depend on the systems connected to the transaction.
