AI services collect sensitive information through what you type or upload, data you choose to connect, and operational details such as account, device, usage, cookie, IP-address, and location signals. Whether a provider later stores it, makes it available to authorized staff, or uses it to improve models depends on the product, feature, settings, plan, and agreement. You do not have to reveal information in a prompt for a service to collect other kinds of data about its use.
How does an AI service get sensitive information?
There is no single collection method. Information may arrive as conversational content, through a feature you enable, from routine operation of the service, or from outside sources. The categories collected depend on the provider and the features you use.
Prompts and uploads
Anything you put in a prompt can be received by the service, including names, health or financial details, workplace information, and other sensitive facts. Files, images, audio, and video can also contain personal information. OpenAI’s privacy policy describes prompts and uploaded material as content, and says content can also include interactions with other users and data from connected services: OpenAI Privacy Policy.
That means an AI does not need to uncover a hidden source to receive a sensitive detail you include in a request. If a task can be completed without the detail, leave it out or replace it with a generic description.

Features and connected services
Enabling a feature can give a service access to information beyond the text in the current conversation. For example, OpenAI says contacts are uploaded when a user chooses a contacts feature; its policy also discusses information from connected services. Before connecting an account or granting access, check what data the feature needs and whether it can be disconnected later.
Account, device, and usage signals
Services may record operational information alongside conversation content. OpenAI’s policy lists examples including IP address, browser and device details, timestamps, feature-use and interaction logs, cookies, and general location inferred from an IP address. Some features may use more precise location if the user chooses to provide it. These signals can be personal data even though they are not written in a prompt.

Information from other sources
A provider may also receive information from sources outside your account activity. OpenAI says it receives some information from safety and security partners, advertisers or data partners, and publicly available internet sources. Does collecting information mean it is used to train a model?
No. A service can process information to answer a request, run a feature, support users, maintain safety and security, or comply with legal obligations. Model improvement is a distinct use, and its defaults vary by service and product.

OpenAI says content from individual consumer services may be used to improve models depending on settings. Its API documentation says API data is not used to train models by default. Anthropic describes possible training sources including public internet information, licensed third-party datasets, user or crowd-worker data, and information users permit it to use. It also distinguishes consumer training choices from its commercial services. Consequently, “not used for training” does not mean “not collected,” “not processed,” or “not retained.” A service may still process data for other purposes described in its policies.

Who may access the information, and how long can it remain?
Access and retention are provider- and product-specific. OpenAI says a limited number of authorized personnel and trusted service providers may access content for specified support, safety and security, legal, or model-improvement purposes; model-improvement access is subject to settings. It also says content may be stored on its systems and service-provider systems in the United States and elsewhere. These are described limits, not a promise of zero human access or immediate deletion.
Temporary chats and consumer account deletion
For ChatGPT temporary chats, OpenAI says they do not appear in chat history, do not create or update memories, and are not used to improve models while temporary. A copy may nevertheless be retained for up to 30 days for safety. OpenAI says business and managed-workspace data are treated differently from personal consumer accounts. Anthropic’s consumer retention page, dated July 1, 2026, says deleted conversations leave chat history immediately and are deleted from backend storage within 30 days. If a consumer allows chats or coding sessions to be used to improve Claude, Anthropic says qualifying data may be retained in de-identified form for up to five years in training pipelines. The page applies this statement to new or resumed chats after the setting is enabled and notes other exceptions. Consult Anthropic’s consumer data retention information for its scope and qualifications.
These examples are not universal retention rules. Policies can differ by service, plan, feature, region, and account type, and provider documentation can change.

What can you do to limit exposure?
- Minimize prompt details. Share only what the task needs. OpenAI’s consumer guidance says: “Please do not enter sensitive information that you would not want reviewed or used.”
- Review data and personalization controls. Check model-improvement, memory, and temporary-chat settings. OpenAI locates controls in Settings and notes that availability can depend on plan, account type, and workspace settings.
- Check permissions before connecting features. Review connected services, contact access, precise-location permissions, and app or device permissions before enabling them.
- Use deletion and privacy request options with realistic expectations. Deletion timing and exceptions for legal or safety reasons vary by provider; consult the service’s current policy for the feature and account you use.
- For API or workplace use, verify the actual terms and configuration. OpenAI says approved API Zero Data Retention and Modified Abuse Monitoring controls have eligibility and endpoint limitations, and some application state may still be stored. Check the applicable agreement and settings rather than assuming all API or business data receives the same treatment.
