AI security scanners look for vulnerability patterns in source code and, depending on the tool, trace how data moves through a program or ask a language model to review code against security instructions. “AI scanner” is not one specific analysis method: a tool may use conventional static analysis, AI-assisted review, or a combination. Its output is evidence to investigate—not proof that a vulnerability exists, and not proof that the application is secure when no issue is reported.
What a source-code security scanner examines
Static application security testing, or SAST, analyzes an application’s source code, bytecode, or binaries without executing the application. Because it examines the program from the inside, it can look for unsafe operations, trace inputs through code, and show where a possible weakness occurs. Some scanners work directly from source; others first extract the program into a representation that is easier to query.
That distinction matters when evaluating the word “AI.” Static analysis is not inherently AI: a conventional scanner can parse code and run rules without a language model. Conversely, a product marketed as AI-enabled may add a model to a static-analysis workflow rather than replace the underlying analysis. The useful question is what the scanner actually does to your repository and what evidence it gives you.

How the analysis moves from code to a finding
1. Parse or extract the code
A scanner first needs a representation of the program. A parser can turn source into an abstract syntax tree (AST), a structured view of the code’s elements and their relationships. This makes it possible to recognize operations and their context rather than search only for matching words.

Some tools use a deeper extraction process. CodeQL, for example, documents extracting code into a database containing syntax and semantic information, then running queries against that database. For compiled languages, its extractor observes the normal build process; for interpreted languages, extraction works directly from source and resolves dependencies. These approaches require different setup and may depend on the project’s build or dependency context.
2. Look for risky code shapes
Rules can identify recognizable constructs, such as a string concatenated into a SQL query. A local pattern check is useful because it can quickly point a developer to suspicious code. But a risky-looking line does not by itself establish that an attacker can reach it or that the application handles the value unsafely. Basic patterns can also miss a flaw whose cause or consequence spans multiple functions or files.
3. Trace inputs and execution paths
More advanced analysis follows how values travel through a program. Taint analysis models untrusted data as a source and a sensitive operation as a sink. The scanner looks for a path by which that input can reach the operation without an adequate sanitizing step. For example, it may examine whether externally supplied text can flow into a query or command.

Control-flow analysis adds a different question: under what execution paths can the relevant code run? Semantic analysis can account for language idioms and framework conventions, which may affect whether a value is actually treated safely. These forms of analysis can connect code locations that a simple pattern check sees in isolation; their results still depend on the scanner’s models of the language, framework, and application.
4. Run rules or queries and present results
After extraction, the tool applies rules or queries and converts the results into findings. A result may identify a single suspicious location or show a sequence of steps along a dataflow or control-flow path. CodeQL’s documented workflow is to create a code database, execute queries, and interpret results in source context.
That context is important for triage. A finding with a trace can help a reviewer see where data enters, how it moves, and which operation it reaches. The trace is a lead to verify against the actual code path and application behavior, not an automatic verdict about exploitability.

5. Add AI in a specific role
OWASP AGHAST distinguishes several approaches rather than treating every scanner as the same kind of AI product:
- Ordinary static checks: rules or queries identify potentially risky code without requiring an LLM.
- Hybrid checks: static analysis finds code locations, and AI examines those locations. The model is focused on candidate code rather than asked to discover every issue unaided.
- Repository-level AI scanning: an LLM applies custom security instructions to a repository. This can address organization-specific questions, such as whether a custom authorization mechanism is used consistently or whether API endpoints return more data than intended.
These modes have different strengths and failure modes. A repository-level model can consider a broader instruction or design expectation, while a static rule may provide a more structured path through code. Neither label guarantees coverage. Treat AI output as another analysis input that needs review.
What kinds of issues scanners can identify
Static analysis tools can be configured for a range of security and code-quality problems. OWASP’s SAST guidance describes categories including injection, unsafe output handling, hardcoded secrets, weak cryptography, insecure deserialization, path traversal, and error-handling or coding-standard violations that can contribute to security bugs. NIST’s tool directory also lists specialized capabilities such as detecting hardcoded credentials and using machine-learning methods to filter some false positives.

Those are examples of tool capabilities, not a promise that any one scanner detects every instance in every language. Coverage depends on the tool, its rules or queries, the language and framework, and the code context available to it. Check the exact coverage relevant to your repository instead of inferring it from a general product label.
| Issue area | What a scanner may look for | What to verify in a finding |
|---|---|---|
| Injection | Untrusted input reaching a SQL, command, or LDAP operation. | Whether the reported input reaches the operation on a real execution path, and whether parameterization or another effective control changes the risk. |
| Cross-site scripting or unsafe output | Data reaching an output context without appropriate handling. | Which output context is involved and whether the application’s encoding or framework conventions are accounted for. |
| Secrets and cryptography | Hardcoded credentials or potentially weak cryptographic practices. | Whether a flagged value is an active secret and whether the cryptographic use is actually inappropriate in context. |
| Deserialization and path traversal | Risky deserialization or paths influenced by untrusted input. | Whether the relevant data is attacker-controlled and what validation or restrictions apply before use. |
| Authorization and logic | Inconsistent custom authorization or behavior that returns excessive data, especially when a model is directed to inspect these requirements. | Whether the code’s intended policy and runtime state support the model’s conclusion. |
For a vulnerability already found, CodeQL also describes variant analysis: using the known flaw as a seed to search the same codebase or multiple repositories for similar problems. This is a targeted way to look for related instances; it does not replace a broader assessment of the application.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy findings can be wrong—and why a clean scan is not proof
A static scanner does not observe every runtime condition or environment detail. It can flag code that is safe in its actual context, producing a false positive. It can also miss an issue that depends on data state, runtime behavior, or a logic or authorization decision that its analysis does not model. A scan that reports no issues therefore cannot establish that the application is secure.

Review findings by checking the reported location and path against the application’s real behavior. Determine whether the input is attacker-controlled, whether the relevant branch can execute, what controls apply, and whether the sensitive operation is reachable. When the tool does not show a path or its explanation is unclear, use the code location as a starting point and investigate the surrounding call chain and behavior. Do not dismiss a result solely because it is AI-generated or accept it solely because it appears in a scanner report.
AI introduces a repository-content risk
An AI coding agent that reads repository material may encounter untrusted instructions embedded in issues, pull requests, comments, or README files. OWASP recommends treating such content as untrusted input when an agent processes it, and reviewing changes that result. If an agent suggests dependencies, audit them and check suggested versions against vulnerability information rather than assuming generated code or package choices are safe.

| Evaluation axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Analysis depth | Does the tool use local patterns or AST checks, taint/dataflow analysis, control-flow analysis, semantic checks, LLM review, or a hybrid? Does it show the evidence behind a finding? |
| Language and framework coverage | Does it support the exact languages and frameworks in the repository, including the relevant project structure and conventions? Treat directory listings as a starting point and verify current support. |
| Where it runs | Can developers get feedback in an IDE or before a commit, and can the team run deeper scans across the codebase in CI? OWASP describes these as workflow options, not universal speed guarantees. |
| Integration and output | Does it fit the development and CI/CD workflow? Can results be consumed by the tools the team already uses, including through formats such as SARIF? |
| Noise and triage | Are findings explained with code locations and paths? Can the team review samples, establish a baseline, and manage false positives before making scan results enforcement gates? |
| Privacy and execution model | Does the scanner send source or contextual code to a provider? What exclusions are available? Is self-hosted or isolated execution appropriate for sensitive code? |
| Cost and operating fit | What are the current license costs and terms, and what work is needed to configure, review, and maintain the scanner? Verify current pricing directly with the vendor. |
A practical way to put findings to work
- Match the tool to the repository. Confirm language, framework, build, and workflow coverage before relying on results. Decide whether the priority is fast local feedback, broader CI scans, custom policy checks, or a combination.
- Run an initial scan and review a sample. Inspect findings from different categories. Check whether explanations and traces are useful, whether safe code is being flagged, and whether meaningful paths are detected.
- Baseline existing results. Separate known findings from newly introduced ones so teams can improve the code without making an unreviewed backlog an automatic release blocker. OWASP recommends baselining and manual review of samples before enforcing gates.
- Assign human triage. For each important result, verify the code path, input trust, execution conditions, and applicable safeguards. Record why a result is accepted, fixed, or judged not applicable so the same issue is not repeatedly re-investigated.
- Use scans at the right points in development. Fast IDE or pre-commit feedback can help catch issues near the code change; deeper full-codebase scans in CI can provide a wider view. The exact cadence and performance depend on the tool and project.
- Review AI-related data and changes. Understand what repository content is sent to an AI provider, constrain exposure where needed, treat repository instructions as untrusted, and review agent-generated changes and dependencies.
What an AI scanner can—and cannot—tell you
A scanner can surface suspicious code, connect an input to a sensitive operation, apply organization-specific review instructions, and help search for variants of a known flaw. The value of its report depends on the analysis behind it and the evidence it exposes. It cannot, by itself, prove that every reported path is exploitable or that unreported code is safe. Use it as one part of a security process, with findings checked against the application’s actual behavior.
