AI search does not use a publicly disclosed, universal formula to pick brands. Google, ChatGPT Search, and Microsoft’s AI experiences each draw on search and retrieval systems to find information they consider relevant and reliable, but their exact ranking weights—and whether a particular brand will be named—remain undisclosed. For a brand to have a chance, its information must be accessible to the relevant system, useful for the question, and supported by credible sources.
What affects which brands AI search recommends?
The answer depends on the platform, the question, and the available information. Public documentation points to a combination of relevance, source quality, reliability, eligibility, and user context—not a single “AI visibility” score that determines every recommendation.
Google describes factors in its general Search ranking systems that include what a query means, how relevant content is, source expertise, usability, location, and settings. The weight of a signal can vary by query: freshness, for example, matters more for current news than for a dictionary definition. Google also says that prominent sites linking to or referring to a page can be one indication of trustworthiness. Those disclosures describe Search ranking broadly; they are not a complete formula for brand recommendations in generative answers.

Microsoft’s AI experiences can cite web content, but Microsoft’s citation reporting measures appearances rather than assigning a universal quality or rank score. None of these disclosures makes it possible to predict with certainty which brand a system will mention for a particular query.

How do Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode find information?
Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode use its Search ranking and quality systems. In its Search Central guide for website owners, Google describes grounding: Search retrieves relevant pages from its index, and AI systems use information from those pages to generate a response with supporting links.
Query fan-out can broaden the search
For a complex prompt, Google says a model may generate related queries to look for additional relevant results. This query fan-out means a response may draw on pages relevant to related aspects of a question, rather than only pages matching its exact wording. It does not mean that every related search or source will appear in the final answer.
Eligibility comes before visibility
Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a Search snippet to qualify for its generative Search features. It must also be crawlable and included in generative features in Search Console. Eligibility is a prerequisite, not a promise that Google will retrieve, cite, or name a business. Google’s In-Depth Guide to How Google Search Works, last updated December 18, 2025, describes the broader stages as crawling, indexing, and serving results; not every crawled page is indexed or served.
How does ChatGPT Search choose what to show?
OpenAI’s Help Center says ChatGPT Search ranks results using multiple factors intended to help people find relevant, reliable information. OpenAI does not disclose a complete weighting formula or guarantee that any particular site or brand will be shown.
For inclusion eligibility, OpenAI tells site owners to allow OAI-Searchbot to crawl their sites and to ensure their hosting provider or content delivery network permits traffic from OpenAI’s published searchbot IP addresses. Meeting those access conditions makes a site eligible for inclusion; it does not guarantee a citation or recommendation.
What can publishers learn from Microsoft’s AI citation reports?
Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance reporting provides publishers with information about content appearing as citations in AI-generated answers across Microsoft Copilot, Bing, and select partner AI experiences. Microsoft’s June 16, 2026 announcement describes preview features for classifying intents, grouping topics, viewing Citation Share, and comparing citation activity over time.
Rank #3
Microsoft defines Citation Share as the fraction of citations for a grounding query attributed to a site. It is an observational measure, not a ranking system, competitive scoreboard, traffic-share estimate, or assessment of content quality. Microsoft says citation patterns can shift with user behavior, models, freshness, partner refreshes, and wider changes across the web. A change in Citation Share therefore shows a change in observed citations; on its own, it does not establish why the change happened.
How do Google, ChatGPT Search, and Microsoft differ?
| System | What the platform says | Access or eligibility | Visibility reporting described in the sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | Built on Search ranking and quality systems; responses are grounded in retrieved pages, with query fan-out possible for complex prompts. | Pages need to be indexed, eligible for a Search snippet, crawlable, and included in generative features in Search Console. | Google says Search Console can help publishers understand discovery through its generative features. |
| ChatGPT Search | Search results are ranked using multiple factors intended to find relevant, reliable information; the full formula is not disclosed. | OpenAI says site owners should allow OAI-Searchbot and permit traffic from its published searchbot IP addresses. | The OpenAI Help Center source describes ranking and eligibility, but does not specify a publisher visibility report. |
| Microsoft AI experiences | AI-generated answers can cite web content; the cited sources describe measurement of appearances, not a disclosed universal recommendation formula. | Not stated in the Microsoft AI Performance announcement. | Bing Webmaster Tools’ preview reporting includes citation activity, Citation Share, intent classification, topic grouping, and comparisons over time. |
The disclosures are not directly comparable tests: each platform describes its own system, and the Microsoft announcement focuses on reporting rather than a full account of how its answers select sources. They do not support ranking the platforms or predicting the outcome for a specific brand.
What does empirical research suggest—and what does it not prove?
A 2025 arXiv preprint by Mahe Chen, Xiaoxuan Wang, Kaiwen Chen, and Nick Koudas, Generative Engine Optimization: How to Dominate AI Search, reports controlled experiments across verticals, languages, and query paraphrases. Its abstract reports that the tested AI search services relied more on earned media—third-party sources—than on brand-owned or social media, and that services differed in freshness, domain diversity, cross-language stability, and sensitivity to phrasing.
Rank #4
These are findings from the services and experiments studied, not a rule for every AI search system or a guarantee that third-party coverage will cause a brand recommendation. The abstract does not provide a single headline sample-size figure, so no sample-size claim can be made from it. The study supports a cautious takeaway: source mix and response to wording can vary by service, making a single optimization recipe or universal percentage unreliable.

-
Make the relevant pages accessible
Check that important pages are crawlable. For Google generative Search, verify indexing, Search snippet eligibility, and inclusion in generative features in Search Console. For ChatGPT Search inclusion eligibility, allow OAI-Searchbot and confirm that the host or content delivery network permits its published searchbot IP addresses. Neither platform promises placement after these checks.

Publish useful information that adds something distinct
Google recommends unique, reliable, people-first content and says a first-hand perspective can help a source stand out. Describe actual experience accurately; do not imply a product was tested or a service used if it was not. A clear answer to a real reader question is more defensible than claims written solely to attract an AI mention.
-
Keep sound SEO and site structure in place
Google says SEO continues to matter for generative Search because those features rely on core Search systems. Make pages easy to crawl and navigate, and organize information so readers can find the details they need.
-
Skip unsupported AI-specific shortcuts
Google’s current Search Central guidance says Google does not require special AI markup or an
llms.txtfile, tiny content chunks, a particular page length, or AI-specific rewrites to handle synonyms. It also says artificial mentions are not rewarded. Structured data is not required for generative Search, though Google says it can remain useful to an overall SEO strategy and eligibility for rich results. -
Use first-party reporting to observe changes
Use Google Search Console for the generative Search performance reporting Google describes, and Bing Webmaster Tools for Microsoft AI citation reporting. Compare activity over time and interpret it in context: an appearance metric is not proof of traffic, a stable rank, or a specific change causing the result.

Do citations or visibility metrics mean a brand is winning?
No single metric in the cited platform disclosures answers that question across AI search. A citation shows that a source appeared in an observed answer; it does not, by itself, establish traffic, quality, or a lasting recommendation advantage. Google also published Preferred Sources figures in a May 27, 2026 announcement: it said people were twice as likely to click through to a Preferred Source and had selected more than 345,000 unique sources. Those are Google’s own figures about that feature, not independent measurements of how often brands are recommended or proof of a general ranking effect.
The platform documentation and the 2025 preprint do not establish a reliable cross-platform rate for how often a named brand is recommended, or a stable share attributable to any one factor. The practical measure is therefore the visibility each platform actually reports, interpreted within that platform and over time—not a made-up universal score.
