AI podcast apps do not independently know which sources deserve attention: they build an episode from the files, links, or notebook materials supplied to them, then use the user’s format and focus settings to shape the result. In the documented workflows from Gemini Notebook Audio Overview and ElevenLabs GenFM, source selection, episode style, language, and editorial control all affect what listeners hear. The generated audio is a useful way to explore material, not a substitute for checking important claims against the originals.
What does an AI podcast app use as its source?
Usually, the episode begins with a source collection chosen by the user: documents, web pages, video material, or content already gathered in a project or notebook. The app processes that material and generates an audio discussion or summary from it. If the sources are narrow, incomplete, outdated, or one-sided, the episode inherits those limitations. A polished conversation can therefore sound more comprehensive than its input really is.
That principle is especially clear in Gemini Notebook Audio Overview. Google describes the generated discussion as a reflection of the notebook sources, rather than a comprehensive or objective account of the topic. The original September 11, 2024 announcement makes that distinction explicit. In practice, a Notebook Audio Overview should be understood as an audio treatment of the material in a notebook, not as a general-purpose answer assembled from every relevant source on the internet.

GenFM also starts with material the user provides, but its documented creation flow accepts several kinds of inputs in Studio. The source set is not a minor setup detail: it is the evidence and perspective from which the episode is made. Before generating, decide whether the material covers the question you want answered, and whether it includes the perspectives or context a listener needs.

How do the documented workflows select source material?
Gemini Notebook Audio Overview
For the consumer Notebook workflow, create or open a notebook, add the sources you want to use, and choose Audio Overview in Studio. The audio is tied to that notebook’s supplied material. The Gemini Notebook Help page describes generating and listening to an overview from notebook sources, as well as exploring source material and using quotations and citations while the audio plays.
This model is useful when you have already assembled a reading set—for example, class notes and assigned readings, project documents, or a collection of articles—and want to hear the connections the system draws among them. It also means that a missing source stays missing: adding an audio overview does not make the notebook’s underlying collection more complete.
ElevenLabs GenFM
GenFM in Studio can create a podcast from an uploaded EPUB, PDF, TXT, HTML, DOCX, XML, or FDX file, a URL, or an existing project. The GenFM workflow documentation describes those input options and the subsequent script and audio steps.
That offers a different starting point from a notebook-centered workflow: a creator can provide a particular file or URL, or use material already in a project. GenFM’s documented help does not establish that users select individual sources from a collection in the same way the Enterprise notebook API permits. Treat the comparison as a difference in the documented controls, not proof that one product can never support other source-selection behavior.
Google’s Enterprise notebook API
Google’s separate Enterprise source API supports Google Docs, Google Slides, raw text, web content, YouTube videos, and uploaded files including PDF, TXT, Markdown, DOCX, PPTX, and XLSX. Sources can be added one at a time or in batches and are tracked by source ID. The source API documentation is marked Preview and shows an update date of October 7, 2026.

The notebook audio-overview API accepts optional source IDs along with an episode-focus string and language code. If the caller omits source IDs, the documentation says the API uses all sources in the notebook. That is a consequential default: an integration that should generate an episode from a subset of a notebook needs to pass the intended source IDs rather than assume that only recently added or selected materials will be included. The notebook audio-overview API page is also marked Preview.
Which controls shape the generated episode?
Source material determines what information is available; generation controls determine how that information is presented. These settings do not make weak or missing source material reliable. They help decide whether the episode is a discussion, a short briefing, an evaluation, or another treatment of the supplied content.
Gemini Notebook: format, language, length, and focus
Gemini Notebook Help lists four Audio Overview formats:
- Deep Dive: two hosts discuss the sources and connect topics.
- Brief: one speaker presents key takeaways in under two minutes.
- Critique: two hosts provide a constructive evaluation.
- Debate: two hosts exchange perspectives in a formal debate.
The user can choose an output language and enter a prompt directing the hosts toward particular topics or a particular level of expertise. For English output, the length setting offers Shorter, Default, and Longer. The length choices are English-only, so do not assume that a non-English overview has the same duration control. The current help page says Audio Overviews can be generated in more than 80 languages; that figure describes language availability, not a guarantee that every format or control behaves identically in every language.
Generation runs in the background and can take a couple of minutes. The useful prompt is specific about editorial emphasis: what question should the hosts address, what themes should they connect, or what level of explanation should they assume? A prompt can steer attention, but it cannot supply evidence absent from the notebook.

GenFM: format, duration, voices, language, and topics
GenFM offers a host-and-guest conversation or a shorter single-host bulletin. Users choose a short, default, or long duration, select suggested or custom voices, and use a detected or chosen language. They may provide focus topics or leave topic selection to the AI. Those settings are documented in the GenFM help instructions.
Think of focus topics as an editorial brief, not a source filter. If the material contains several themes, naming the important ones can help direct the episode. But a topic prompt does not by itself establish that a source supports a claim, nor does a chosen voice or longer duration make the explanation more accurate.
How do Gemini Notebook and GenFM differ for creators?
The most practical distinction is the documented point at which a creator can inspect the wording. GenFM generates text first; users can review and edit the script before exporting it to generate downloadable audio. That gives a creator an opportunity to correct phrasing, remove a misleading passage, or make the narration fit an editorial standard before it becomes audio.
Gemini Notebook Help documents generating, playing, sharing, and downloading the audio overview. It does not describe an equivalent script-editing step before audio generation. That is a limit of what the cited consumer instructions establish, not a claim that editing is impossible in every Gemini context. If a workflow requires line-by-line script approval, GenFM’s documented script stage is the clear fit among these two workflows.

The table compares documented workflows, not every feature that either provider may offer elsewhere. It also does not establish a market-wide rule for AI podcast apps. For a listener who mainly wants an audio rendering of an existing notebook, Notebook Audio Overview has formats designed for summaries, critique, and debate. For a creator who wants to revise generated wording before audio conversion, GenFM’s documented script-edit step is more directly suited to that requirement.

How to make a better episode from your sources
- Define the listener’s question. Write down what the episode should help someone understand. A broad subject such as “climate policy” is less useful as a brief than a specific question about what the supplied sources say regarding a particular policy, argument, or trade-off.
- Assemble the right source set. Include primary material where possible and enough context to interpret it. Check that the selected files or URLs open and that important dates, definitions, and opposing positions are represented. An app cannot reliably cover a perspective that is absent from its input.
- Choose the output form to match the task. A short bulletin works for a quick orientation; a two-host discussion can connect themes; a critique or debate is useful when the sources themselves support evaluation or contrasting perspectives. Do not request a debate merely to manufacture balance if the source set contains no meaningful second position.
- Write a focused instruction. Tell the hosts which question or topics to prioritize and what level of background to assume. Keep the prompt aligned with what the sources can answer. In Gemini Notebook, use the focus prompt alongside format and language settings; in GenFM, supply focus topics or let the system choose them.
- Review claims against the original material. While listening, note names, figures, dates, and conclusions that matter. In Notebook, use the notebook sources, quotations, and citations to investigate. In GenFM, inspect and edit the script before exporting when wording matters. In either case, verify consequential claims in the underlying source, not just in the generated narration.
- Share the right artifact with the right access. Notebook Help documents link sharing, notebook sharing, and audio download, subject to account access and source restrictions. Public notebook sharing is documented for consumer accounts, while it is disabled for Workspace Enterprise or Education accounts. GenFM documents downloadable audio after export. Confirm that source material and account permissions allow the way you plan to distribute the result.
What the Google API distinction means
“Google podcast API” can refer to different documented routes, and they should not be conflated. The notebook audio-overview API generates audio tied to notebook sources and offers source IDs, focus, and language inputs. It is marked Preview, so its status and behavior should be checked before building a production dependency around it.
Google’s separate standalone Podcast API is not the same notebook-bound feature. Its current Podcast API documentation marks it deprecated and says Google is not allowlisting new customers. The page describes input context below 100,000 tokens, MP3 output, and short and standard length settings; it estimates typical durations at approximately four to five minutes and around ten minutes, respectively. Those are documentation estimates for a deprecated API, not guaranteed output lengths or a recommended new integration path.
For developers, the operational decision is therefore not simply “which API has a podcast endpoint?” The notebook API is a Preview route associated with a source collection and optional source IDs; the standalone route has a deprecation notice and no new-customer allowlisting. Those lifecycle statuses matter before choosing architecture, as much as the audio options do.

The episode sounds confident but misses important context
Return to the source set. Confirm whether the missing context exists in the notebook, project, file, or URL the app received. If it does not, add relevant material and regenerate. If it does, use a tighter focus prompt and verify whether the generated script or audio actually reflects it. Do not assume an episode’s fluent delivery proves that the coverage is complete.

Pause on the claim and compare it with the original source. Google warns that Audio Overviews, including their voices, may contain inaccuracies or audio glitches. The same caution applies to treating generated material as a definitive transcript of reality: the overview is generated content, and important claims should be checked directly. In GenFM, the script review step lets creators address wording before export, but fact-checking still requires consulting the source.

The audio is not the length or style you expected
Check the format and length controls before regenerating. Gemini Notebook’s Shorter, Default, and Longer settings apply to English output; its Brief format is described as under two minutes. GenFM has short, default, and long choices, as well as conversation and bulletin formats. These are controls over intended presentation, not a promise of an exact run time.
Language or playback behavior differs
Gemini Notebook Help lists more than 80 supported output languages, but interactive mode is currently English-only and may have speaker or playback glitches. Google’s launch announcement from September 2024 described English-only, non-interruptible audio at launch; those were launch-era conditions, not the current language statement. Use the current Help page for present controls, and distinguish ordinary Audio Overview from interactive mode.
A sharing option is unavailable
Check account type and the restrictions on the source material. Notebook sharing and downloads are subject to access and source restrictions, and public notebook sharing is disabled for Workspace Enterprise or Education accounts. A sharing limitation does not necessarily mean the audio was not generated; it may reflect the account or underlying content.

Treat it as a navigation and comprehension aid. It can make a source collection easier to absorb, highlight connections, and provide a convenient first pass. It is not an independent investigation of the whole topic, and the voices can make synthesis feel more authoritative than its source basis warrants.
Google’s caveat is direct: Audio Overviews may contain inaccuracies or glitches, and their discussion reflects supplied sources rather than a comprehensive or objective view. That warning is particularly important when a source collection is selective, disputed, or technical. Use the audio to identify what to inspect, then verify consequential details in original documents. For GenFM, review and edit the script when editorial control is needed, but do not confuse script control with source verification.
