AI photo editing can change an image’s visible appearance, its underlying pixels, or both. An upscaled file may have more pixels and look sharper while containing plausible detail that was reconstructed rather than present in the original. Provenance information can record where an image came from and how it was edited, but it cannot by itself establish that the depicted event is real.
What AI editing can change
Traditional adjustments such as exposure, contrast, cropping, and color grading usually alter how existing pixels are displayed. Generative tools can go further: they may remove an object, extend a background, replace a face, add reflections, or create entirely new areas of an image. Those operations generate pixels that did not exist in the source file.
Google Photos identifies some photos and videos edited with generative features, including Magic Eraser, with an “Edited with AI tools” label in supported contexts. The label is useful evidence that an AI feature was involved; it is not a complete description of every change made to the file. Product behavior and supported features vary by app version and device. See Google Photos Help for the current behavior.
Presentation edits versus content edits
- Presentation edits change brightness, color, sharpness, noise, or crop while aiming to retain the scene’s content.
- Content edits add, remove, replace, or rearrange visual elements. Generative fill, object removal, and background replacement can all create new pixels.
- Hybrid edits combine both. A portrait may receive noise reduction and a generated alteration to clothing or facial details.
At normal viewing size, a generated edit can look indistinguishable from a camera capture. At 100% magnification, however, look for inconsistent texture, repeated patterns, warped text, mismatched reflections, or edges that do not follow the scene’s lighting. These clues are indicators to investigate, not conclusive proof of manipulation.

Resolution is not the same as recovered information
Resolution describes the number of pixels in an image, usually expressed as width × height or megapixels. Upscaling increases those dimensions. It can also improve perceived sharpness by estimating color and structure between the original pixels. Neither outcome proves that the new fine detail was recorded by the camera.
For example, a 1,000 × 1,000 image enlarged to 2,000 × 2,000 contains four times as many output pixels, but the source still supplied only one million measured pixels. The missing information must be estimated. In a face, text, fingerprint, license plate, or fabric weave, an estimate can look convincing while being factually wrong.
The 2017 SRGAN paper identifies recovery of convincing fine texture at large scale factors as a central super-resolution challenge. Its result supports a general caution rather than a current product ranking: a visually pleasing reconstruction should be described as generated or synthesized detail when fidelity matters, not as recovered evidence. Why sharpening can hide uncertainty
Edge contrast and texture strongly influence perceived sharpness. An upscaler can draw a cleaner-looking eye, brick wall, or letter by selecting a likely pattern from its model. That can improve a print or casual view, yet make the image less faithful to the source. Fine texture is where fidelity and visual polish most often trade off.

Inspect the original and the enlarged version side by side. If a feature is important, ask whether its shape, spacing, and contrast are supported by multiple original pixels or appear only after enlargement. Keep the original file unchanged so that later viewers can make the same comparison.
How current upscaling options differ
Adobe’s Photoshop documentation, updated May 20, 2026, describes Generative Upscale choices of 2× and 4×. It distinguishes three model goals rather than treating all enlargement as equivalent:

The same documentation states that the models have different maximum output limits. Because limits and model availability can change, check the current Photoshop Generative Upscale documentation before relying on a particular ceiling. No independent, current head-to-head test establishes one of these choices as universally more accurate.

Adobe’s Firefly API documentation describes separate vendor-stated design goals: one user-asset upsampling workflow aims to preserve the original and avoid artificial or hallucinated content, while a generated-image workflow focuses on coherent fine detail. How to check whether a photo was edited with AI
No single visual test can identify every AI edit. Use several checks, starting with recorded metadata and then examining the pixels and the surrounding claim.
1. Check the app’s edit label
- Open the image in the app where it was stored or edited.
- Open the photo’s information or details view.
- Look for an “Edited with AI tools” label or an equivalent notice documented for that app and version.
- Record the exact wording, date, and application version if the image is being used in a report or investigation.
A label confirms that the service recorded use of an AI editing feature. It does not necessarily identify every region changed, and the absence of a label is not proof that no AI tool was used.
2. Look for Content Credentials
Content Credentials are a C2PA-based way to carry information about an image’s origin and editing history. When a credential is present and intact, it may show which application or workflow made a change. Google says that editing an image with valid credentials in Google Photos can add information to its C2PA record. Google also says credentials are not available on Google Photos Web, so a web view may omit information visible in a supported mobile app.
Google Photos’ official guidance states: Content Credentials don’t tell you if a photo or video is real or fake, but you can use the information with the photo or video’s content to make informed decisions.
Treat the credential as a history record, not a truth meter.

3. Examine the file and its metadata
- Keep the original download or camera file, not only a screenshot or messaging-app copy.
- Compare creation, modification, export, and software fields where they are available.
- Check whether the file has been recompressed, resized, or stripped of metadata by a platform.
- Preserve a cryptographic hash or other chain-of-custody record when the image may be evidence.
Metadata can be removed or rewritten, so it is supporting context rather than a guarantee. A clean-looking metadata panel does not establish authenticity, and a missing panel does not establish manipulation.
4. Inspect at 100% and compare with the source
- View the image at 100% rather than relying only on a fit-to-screen preview.
- Check text, fingers, teeth, eyes, jewelry, repeated architectural elements, shadows, reflections, and object boundaries.
- Compare suspicious areas with the earliest available original.
- Zoom back out and decide whether the change affects the image’s meaning, not merely its appearance.
Common warning signs include letters that change shape within one word, duplicated leaves or windows, inconsistent perspective, shadows pointing in different directions, and skin or hair texture that becomes unnaturally uniform. Compression, sharpening, poor focus, and resizing can create similar artifacts, so these signs require corroboration.
5. Check the claim around the image
Authenticity concerns what an image depicts and whether its caption, date, location, and context are accurate. Compare the claim with independent records, earlier versions, and photographs from the same event when available. Provenance can tell you what happened to a file; it cannot confirm that the photographed scene occurred as described.
What provenance can and cannot prove
Adobe Research describes metadata, fingerprinting, and watermarking as complementary provenance technologies. They can help preserve a record as an image moves through editing and publication, but each method has limits. A credential may be lost during export, a platform may not display it, and a legitimate credential can still describe an image whose caption is false.

Conversely, an image without Content Credentials may simply have passed through software or a website that does not support them. The available evidence does not justify inferring either authenticity or manipulation from absence alone.
Google announced C2PA support in Google Photos first for Pixel 10 and then through a gradual Android and iOS rollout. The announcement also describes existing IPTC metadata for AI-edited images and SynthID for images edited with Reimagine. Availability is platform- and rollout-dependent; verify current behavior before giving someone a precise menu path. Preserve fidelity when editing
- Start with a copy. Keep the camera original or untouched scan in read-only storage.
- Record the operation. Note the application, version, model, scale factor, date, and whether the edit was generative.
- Export a working derivative. Use a format that retains the color profile and, where supported, provenance information.
- Compare before delivery. Review the source and output at 100% and at the final display or print size.
- Disclose material changes. State when objects were added or removed, when detail was synthesized, and which file is the unedited reference.
For documentary, scientific, legal, or journalistic work, do not present generated pixels as measurements. An enlarged license plate, face, or text line can be useful for visual orientation, but it must not be treated as newly recovered evidence unless an independent source supports it.
How widespread is AI editing?
Adobe Research reported in 2026 that 39% of professional photographers use AI tools daily in their standard editing work. The figure comes from a survey of 2,000 creative professionals in the United States, United Kingdom, and Japan; it is not a general-population estimate and does not show that AI improves image quality. The report is available from Adobe Research.
That level of use makes workflow disclosure more useful than trying to classify every image as simply “real” or “fake.” A photograph can be camera-captured, color-corrected, enlarged, and then generatively altered in separate stages. The practical question is what changed, which pixels are measured versus synthesized, and whether the recorded history supports the claim being made.
A practical decision checklist
- Do you still have the original file?
- Was the change limited to presentation, or did it add, remove, or replace content?
- Did enlargement increase dimensions without establishing new source information?
- Which model or mode was used, and does its documented goal favor preservation or creative detail?
- Were faces, text, edges, reflections, or fine textures inspected at 100%?
- Are Content Credentials or other metadata present, and does the viewing app support them?
- Does the caption or surrounding claim have independent support?
- Has every material generative change been disclosed to the intended audience?
Use the answers together. AI labels, credentials, metadata, visual inspection, and contextual verification each provide different evidence; none is a standalone authenticity verdict.
