AI for mobility is not just self-driving cars. It is a family of tools that can interpret sensor data, predict changing conditions, optimize plans, and support decisions across driving, public transport, traffic operations, freight, maintenance, EV charging, and traveler information. What a system can achieve depends on its data, operating environment, integration, human oversight, and evaluation; AI alone guarantees no improvement in safety, travel time, cost, or emissions.

Where AI is used in mobility

Area Typical task Who or what it serves
Vehicles and driving Interpret road conditions, predict movement, and support navigation or vehicle control Drivers, passengers, and automated vehicle systems
Traffic and roads Monitor flow, forecast congestion, and inform signal or network operations Road operators and people using the network
Public transport Forecast demand, coordinate service, provide passenger information, or automate selected tasks Transit agencies, staff, and passengers
Fleet and freight Plan routes and schedules as demand and conditions change Fleet operators and freight networks
Maintenance and infrastructure Identify patterns that may indicate wear, damage, or a need for inspection Vehicle, road, and rail operators
EV energy and charging Support charging, energy-aware routing, and charging-infrastructure planning Drivers, fleet managers, and energy-system planners
Traveler information and access Personalize travel guidance or coordinate services and modes Travelers, including people who need accessibility features

These applications can recommend an action, assist a person making a decision, or control a function within a system. That distinction matters: a congestion forecast is not the same as an automatically adjusted traffic signal, and a vehicle assistance feature is not the same as a driverless service.

What AI does in vehicles—and what it does not mean

Perception, prediction, and control

In vehicle systems, AI can process inputs from cameras, radar, and other sensors to help identify road users, signs, obstacles, or hazards. It can also help estimate how a nearby road user may move, support navigation, and inform motion control. The OECD’s overview of AI in mobility describes these roles across perception, prediction, coordination, navigation, and control. The U.S. Department of Transportation also identifies AI as a foundational technology in many automated driving systems, as well as in unmanned aircraft systems and some conventional aircraft applications.

Driver assistance versus automated driving

AI may support a driver-assistance feature while the person remains responsible for monitoring the driving task; its presence does not establish that a vehicle can drive itself in all conditions. Automated driving systems are a separate category of capability, and their operating conditions and human role depend on the specific system. A useful question is not simply “Does it use AI?” but “What task does it perform, in what conditions, and who must monitor or intervene?”

How AI supports traffic and road operations

Road agencies can use AI to combine operational data—potentially including cameras, roadside sensors, and connected-vehicle information—to estimate current conditions and predict congestion. Those estimates can inform traffic managers or feed into adaptive signal control and other network operations. The system’s value depends on whether its data adequately cover the roads and times in question, whether those data are reliable, and whether its outputs integrate with existing traffic-control processes.

A forecast or signal adjustment is a use case, not proof of a particular reduction in delay, collisions, or emissions. The European Commission’s transport digitalization overview and the OECD’s mobility analysis describe these kinds of applications, but a benefit claim for a specific network requires local evaluation against a defined baseline and period.

What AI can do for public transport

Planning, service, and passenger information

Transit agencies can apply AI to demand forecasting, route or schedule adjustment, service coordination, and passenger information. These are operational tools: their usefulness depends on data quality, integration with scheduling and dispatch systems, and whether the resulting service decisions work for the people who rely on them.

Five transit automation technology packages

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) organizes its Strategic Transit Automation Research Plan 2.0 around five packages: Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), automated shuttles, maintenance/yard/parking operations, mobility-on-demand service, and automated Bus Rapid Transit (BRT). The FTA describes 14 use cases within this specific transit-bus automation research analysis; that count is not a tally of all AI applications in mobility. The agency identifies improving safety, transit efficiency and productivity, and customer experience through service frequency and flexibility as research objectives, not as measured results for every deployment.

Mobility-on-demand and access

An FTA evaluation describes the Valley Metro–Waymo RideChoice demonstration in Greater Phoenix. It examined autonomous vehicles used as certified vehicles in a subsidized, curb-to-curb individual mobility service for people certified for ADA paratransit and adults aged 65 and over. The example shows how automation can be explored within an existing service model, while also making eligibility, accessibility, and suitability central questions. An evaluated demonstration does not establish general availability or prove that the service will meet every traveler’s needs.

How AI is used in freight and fleet logistics

Fleet operators can use AI to forecast demand, plan routes and schedules, and revise plans as traffic, orders, or other operating conditions change. At the network level, coordination tools may help manage vehicle and freight flows. These applications concern planning and operational decisions; they do not imply that a freight fleet is autonomous. Their usefulness depends on timely, accurate information and on how well recommendations fit real-world constraints such as delivery windows and fleet capacity.

How AI can support maintenance and infrastructure monitoring

Predictive-maintenance systems analyze data for patterns that may indicate wear or a developing fault, helping operators prioritize inspection and maintenance planning for vehicles or infrastructure. AI-enabled cameras and sensors can also assist with monitoring road or rail conditions. These tools can direct attention to possible issues; a signal from a model is not, by itself, confirmation of a defect or evidence that failures will be reduced. Operators still need appropriate inspection procedures and deployment-specific evaluation.

AI for EV charging and energy use

AI can support battery and charging optimization, energy-aware route planning, and decisions about where charging infrastructure may be needed. These applications connect transport operations with energy systems: they can depend on vehicle and charger status, grid conditions, and travel patterns. A planning model that lacks relevant or current inputs may not reflect actual charging availability or a traveler’s needs.

Traveler information, accessibility, and connected services

AI can help tailor travel advice, support accessibility features, or coordinate modes and services through mobility-as-a-service concepts. Such coordination may help travelers make a journey involving more than one transport option, but it depends on the availability and integration of service information. Accessibility is a design and deployment requirement—not an automatic result of adding automation. Systems should be assessed for who can use them, whose needs are represented in their data, and what alternatives exist when a digital service is unsuitable or unavailable.

How to assess a mobility AI application

For a proposed tool, pilot, or deployment, ask for evidence tied to its specific task rather than relying on a broad claim that it is “AI-powered.” A useful assessment covers:

  • Task and user: What transport problem is being addressed, and who is meant to benefit?
  • Role in the decision: Does the system recommend, assist, or control? Who can review or override its output?
  • Operating conditions and inputs: Where and when is it intended to work, and what data does it need?
  • Safety and oversight: What happens when data are missing, conditions fall outside the intended scope, or the system produces an unreliable result?
  • Integration: How does it connect with existing vehicles, infrastructure, agency processes, or passenger services?
  • Accessibility and distribution: Which groups can use it, and are benefits and limitations assessed across affected communities?
  • Measured outcomes: What baseline, evaluation period, and outcome measures support claims about safety, reliability, cost, emissions, or travel time?

These questions also make comparisons fairer: two systems are not meaningfully comparable if they address different tasks, operate in different conditions, or report different outcomes.

Safety, privacy, and regulation

Transport AI raises questions about safety, data quality and integration, privacy, transparency, and access. The European Commission’s AI Watch publication on smart mobility discusses possible gains in areas such as traffic management, road safety, and access, while identifying data protection and transparency as areas requiring further research. Potential benefits should therefore be distinguished from demonstrated results.

The European Commission’s transport digitalization overview states that the EU AI Act entered into force on 1 August 2024 and gives autonomous driving and AI-driven traffic management as examples of high-risk AI systems. That overview is not a determination of the legal status of a particular product or operator. Classification and obligations depend on the applicable rules and the specific system; anyone making a deployment decision should check the current legal text and relevant jurisdiction-specific requirements.

Policy approaches also vary by jurisdiction. For example, the UK Department for Transport published a Transport Artificial Intelligence Action Plan on 10 June 2025. A policy framework can describe priorities, but it does not replace system-specific safety evidence or local legal review.
