AI is changing work in two different ways: it can assist a person with a task, or it can make decisions about how work is assigned, measured and supervised. Those uses have different consequences. The latest broad evidence review from the International Labour Organization (ILO, 2026) finds productivity gains in some settings, but worker-reported time savings of a few percent of working hours have not yet become consistently higher measured output, earnings or employment. At the same time, EU-OSHA identifies reduced autonomy, faster work and surveillance as pathways to stress and burnout. Responsible systems can also help find hazards and prevent injuries.
The practical answer is therefore conditional. AI is more likely to improve health and productivity when it augments workers, measures real output and quality, protects privacy, gives people control and keeps humans accountable. Systems that optimize every movement, rank workers with opaque data or change schedules without consultation can produce the opposite result.
Start with the distinction: what kind of workplace AI is being used?
Calling every workplace system simply AI hides the decisions that matter most. Before judging an effect, identify what the system actually does.
Generative AI that assists a task
A writing, coding, summarizing or information-retrieval assistant produces a draft or recommendation while a worker remains responsible for checking it. This is the use most often associated with reported time savings. The benefit depends on task fit, output accuracy, training and whether saved time is used for higher-value work rather than filled with additional assignments.

AI-enabled management and evaluation
Algorithmic management allocates shifts, assigns jobs, sets routes, tracks activity, predicts demand or evaluates performance. It changes the worker’s discretion and the consequences of small data errors. A scheduling model and a text-generation assistant should not be assessed with the same health or fairness test.
Occupational-safety and monitoring tools
Computer vision, sensor systems and predictive models can flag unsafe conditions, equipment problems or exposure to hazards. They can support prevention, but a warning is useful only when someone can investigate it and management acts on the finding. Monitoring that is presented as safety work can also become disciplinary surveillance if its purpose and access rules are unclear.
What the productivity evidence actually shows
The ILO’s 2026 evidence review combines experiments, firm-level data, platform studies and worker and employer surveys. It finds real gains in particular tasks and workplaces, but results are uneven and often not independently verified. The most important distinction is between a worker saying that a task took less time and an organization demonstrating more completed, accurate work without simply increasing workload.

| Claim or measure | What the evidence supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Time saved on an individual task | Some workers report saving a few percent of their working hours when AI fits the task. | That the saved time becomes higher output, pay or employment across an industry. |
| Productivity in a particular experiment or firm | Gains can be measurable under the tested conditions, with the stated task, users and quality controls. | A universal effect for every occupation, model or implementation. |
| Aggregate economic outcomes | The current synthesis has not found a consistent translation from reported time savings to broad output, earnings or employment gains. | A conclusion that AI has no productivity value at all. |
| Worker-reported improvement | Useful evidence about perceived effort, speed and usability. | A substitute for audited output, error rates, customer results or working-time data. |
Several factors explain the gap. AI may shorten the first draft but leave verification, correction and coordination unchanged. Employers may use capacity released by automation to raise targets. New workflows can require training and additional review before they pay off. Poor data, unsuitable prompts or unreliable outputs can erase a nominal time saving through rework. A credible productivity claim should therefore name the task, compare quality as well as speed, state who was measured and report the period and conditions.

Will AI take jobs or mostly change them?
The ILO’s global occupational exposure analysis describes augmentation as the more likely overall effect of generative AI: parts of a job are changed while many duties remain. Exposure varies by occupation, gender and national-income context. Exposure means that tasks could be affected; it is not a forecast that a particular worker will lose a job.
Why task exposure is not the same as job replacement
Jobs contain bundles of technical, interpersonal, physical and judgment-intensive duties. A model may handle routine documentation while a worker still performs diagnosis, negotiation, care, physical operations or accountability. Replacement becomes more plausible when nearly all core tasks are standardized, outputs are easy to verify and the organization can redesign the process around the system.
What workers should watch for
- Which tasks are being automated, and which new checking, exception-handling or customer-facing tasks are being added?
- Is training provided during paid time, and are performance targets adjusted while the workflow is changing?
- Does the employer use AI to remove low-value work, or to intensify the pace and quantity of remaining work?
- Are opportunities and impacts distributed differently across occupations, genders, contract types or countries?
How AI can increase stress and burnout
AI does not produce one inevitable psychological outcome. EU-OSHA’s analysis identifies work organization as the key pathway: systems can reduce control, increase intensity and make decisions feel opaque. These conditions are established occupational risks associated with stress and burnout, even though the available material does not provide one causal effect size for AI adoption across all sectors.

When a model dictates routes, schedules, scripts or the order of tasks, workers may have less discretion to respond to unusual cases. Low control is especially problematic when targets remain fixed but the system’s recommendations are difficult to challenge. A human override that exists only on paper does not restore meaningful autonomy.

Work intensification
Automation can remove pauses, increase the number of cases assigned or make continuous availability technically possible. A productivity dashboard may turn a temporary gain into a permanent expectation. Stress risk rises when speed is rewarded while quality, recovery time and staffing are ignored.
Surveillance and privacy concerns
Location data, keystrokes, camera feeds, call analytics and inferred ratings can make workers feel watched beyond what is necessary for the task. Unclear retention, access and appeal rules create uncertainty even when no adverse decision has yet occurred. Monitoring can also shift attention from safe practice to appearing active in the data.
Uncertainty and skill erosion
Workers may not know whether a model will change their role, how an evaluation was produced or what skills will remain valuable. If the system removes opportunities to practice judgment, people can lose confidence and become less able to intervene when the model fails.

| Potential operational benefit | Job-quality concern | Control that addresses the concern |
|---|---|---|
| Faster routing, dispatch or workload allocation | Constant optimization can remove discretion and increase pace. | Allow documented overrides, realistic buffers and review of workload data. |
| More consistent scheduling and staffing forecasts | Errors in demand or attendance data can produce unfair shifts or unstable hours. | Audit inputs, publish scheduling rules and provide a correction process. |
| Performance information for supervisors | Intrusive surveillance can turn proxies into punitive ratings. | Limit collection to a defined purpose and prohibit unrelated reuse. |
| Early identification of delays or safety events | Workers may avoid reporting problems if every anomaly is treated as individual failure. | Use data for prevention first, investigate context and protect reporting. |
The case study reports both streamlining and efficiency benefits and concerns about intrusive surveillance and deterioration in job quality. The result depends less on the presence of an algorithm than on who controls it, what data it uses, whether workers participate and whether a human can explain and correct a decision.
When AI can support occupational safety
The ILO’s 2025 occupational-safety report describes opportunities involving automation, smart occupational-safety-and-health tools, monitoring, algorithmic management, worker participation, risk assessment and preventive strategies. These are opportunities rather than guaranteed outcomes.
Useful safety applications
- Detecting equipment faults or environmental conditions before they become incidents.
- Identifying patterns in near misses, maintenance records or exposure data for preventive action.
- Reducing human exposure to dangerous, repetitive or physically demanding tasks through automation.
- Helping safety teams prioritize inspections when resources are limited.
Conditions for a genuine safety benefit
Management must define a prevention objective, validate the model in the actual work environment and involve workers who understand the hazards. Alerts need a response owner, a documented escalation path and regular checks for false positives and missed events. A system should never be used to shift responsibility for unsafe conditions onto individual workers when staffing, equipment or procedures are the underlying cause.

The ILO’s 2025 analysis of AI in human-resource management warns that unclear objectives, biased or incomplete data and opaque programming can distort decisions and reinforce existing inequalities. Janine Berg, senior economist in the ILO Research Department, summarized the issue this way: “Organizations often assume AI will improve efficiency or reduce bias, but these systems depend on the quality of their objectives and data.” She adds that, “Without a human-centred approach, AI can inadvertently undermine fairness, transparency and trust in the workplace.”

Questions every deployment should answer
- What decision is the system helping to make, and what decisions are explicitly outside its scope?
- Which data are collected, who can access them, how long are they retained and can workers see or correct relevant records?
- How are accuracy, disparate impacts and changes in error rates tested across worker groups?
- Who can override an output, explain it to an affected worker and investigate a complaint?
- What happens when the model is unavailable, wrong or contradicted by professional judgment?
Compare workplace AI with six practical tests
Use the same questions for a task assistant, a scheduling model or a monitoring platform. The comparison prevents a claimed efficiency gain from obscuring a cost to health or fairness.
| Test | Task assistance | Automated management or evaluation |
|---|---|---|
| Primary output | Draft, recommendation or search result checked by a worker. | Assignment, ranking, schedule, target or decision affecting a worker. |
| Success measure | Verified quality, completion time and rework. | Operational results plus error rates, appeals and effects on workload. |
| Worker control | Ability to accept, edit or reject the suggestion. | Meaningful override, explanation and appeal before consequences. |
| Monitoring and privacy | Data limited to improving the task. | Strict purpose limitation, access controls and retention rules. |
| Participation | User testing and training before rollout. | Worker consultation, safety review and ongoing joint oversight. |
| Distribution of effects | Check accuracy and usability across roles and languages. | Check outcomes across occupations, genders, contract types and locations. |
Implementation playbook for employers
- Define the problem before choosing a model. State the safety, service or administrative outcome sought, and document why AI is necessary.
- Map tasks and affected people. Separate assistance from decisions about hiring, scheduling, pay, discipline or dismissal. Identify groups that could experience different error rates.
- Set baseline measures. Record output, quality, working time, incidents, autonomy indicators and workload before launch. Do not use self-reported time saved as the only baseline.
- Run a limited pilot. Keep a human decision-maker, test unusual cases and log errors, overrides, complaints and additional work created by verification.
- Publish operating rules. Tell workers the purpose, data sources, retention period, decision owner and appeal route in plain language.
- Review health and fairness continuously. Recheck workload, break patterns, near misses, stress signals, disparate impacts and model drift at scheduled intervals.
- Stop or redesign when harm appears. A pause trigger should cover unsafe recommendations, unexplained adverse decisions, privacy breaches and sustained work intensification.
What workers can do now
- Ask whether a tool is assisting your work or evaluating you, and what data it uses.
- Request written criteria for targets, ratings, scheduling and automated decisions.
- Keep records of incorrect assignments, unpaid verification time, missed breaks and safety alerts that were ignored.
- Use the formal correction or appeal channel; collective representation can help identify patterns that an individual cannot see.
- Do not bypass a safety control to satisfy an algorithmic target. Report conflicts between the system and safe practice.
- Seek training on checking generated content, protecting confidential information and recognizing model errors.
How to interpret the evidence and its limits
EU-OSHA’s 2023 report included 22 expert interviews, a literature review, consultation with national focal points and statistical analysis including ESENER-3. Twenty-two interviews can illuminate mechanisms and implementation concerns; they are not a prevalence estimate for all workplaces. The APA’s Work in America survey series provides U.S. worker context on psychological safety, AI, monitoring and wellbeing, but a survey association should not be treated as a causal evaluation unless that specific report supports one.
The evidence base combines experiments, firm and platform studies, case studies, occupational-risk guidance and surveys conducted in different years and places. No single comparable statistic currently links workplace AI adoption to stress, mental health or productivity across sectors and countries. The ILO’s 2026 review is the most current broad synthesis considered here, but measured effects will continue to change as organizations redesign jobs and workers adapt.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBottom line
AI can make work safer and more productive when it removes hazardous tasks, supports judgment and is governed with transparent goals, reliable data, worker participation and human accountability. It can also intensify work, reduce autonomy and expand surveillance. Judge a deployment by measured quality and health outcomes—not by a time-saving claim alone—and by whether people can understand, challenge and safely override its decisions.
