AI is already changing the speed and content of some UK tasks, but it has not yet produced clear, economy-wide gains in productivity or a proven wave of job losses. The strongest early pattern is task transformation: some workers complete activities faster, firms are experimenting unevenly, and hiring and pay effects differ sharply by occupation, skill and employer.

Workers with specialised AI skills are earning substantial wage premiums, while the broader group of people whose jobs are exposed to AI has seen little measured wage change so far. Young workers and people entering highly exposed occupations face transition risks, but official assessments say current employment changes cannot yet be attributed to AI alone.

What is changing in UK workplaces now?

Generative AI is being used primarily as a tool inside existing jobs rather than as a complete replacement for occupations. It can draft text, suggest or review code, answer support queries, search documents and help with analysis. Whether that produces higher output, fewer hours, better pay or fewer jobs depends on what an employer does with the time saved.

A worker may finish a report in half the time, for example, while the employer uses the remaining time to serve more customers, raises the quality standard, reduces overtime or simply expects more reports. Those outcomes have different effects on measured productivity, staffing and wages. This is why task-level speed results should not be reported as economy-wide productivity growth.

The UK Government’s Assessment of AI capabilities and the impact on the UK labour market, published by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and the AI Security Institute on 28 January 2026, cautions: “The available evidence does not yet provide clear answers to many of the questions that matter most for policy.”

Could AI lift UK productivity?

The long-run upside is significant but still a projection

OECD modelling cited in the UK Government’s 2026 assessment estimates that AI could add 0.4 to 1.2 percentage points to annual UK labour-productivity growth over the next decade. This is a modelled range, not a measured result already achieved by UK businesses.

The opportunity matters because UK labour productivity is about 20% below the US level. AI-exposed, knowledge-intensive services account for approximately 23% of UK GDP, so improvements in activities such as professional services, information work and technical occupations could have a large effect if they spread beyond pilot projects.

Modelled gains require more than access to a chatbot. Firms need reliable data, redesigned processes, employee training, security controls and managers who can decide which decisions should remain with people. Delays in those complementary investments can leave a technically capable system producing little additional output.

Experiments show faster tasks, not a guaranteed national gain

Experiments reported by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and the AI Security Institute in 2026 found the following speed effects in particular task settings:

Task area Reported speed effect How to interpret it
Writing 59% Result from context-specific experiments, not a universal productivity rate
Software development 56% Applies to the tested development activities and conditions
IT support 44% Does not establish that every support team will be 44% faster
Legal work 34% Measured for the evaluated legal tasks
Consulting 25% Measured for the evaluated consulting tasks

These figures indicate that AI can reduce the time needed for some activities. They do not show whether the work was accurate, whether a person had to check every output, whether demand increased, or whether the saved time translated into more goods and services. A task can become faster while total output stays flat if quality checks, approvals or other bottlenecks remain unchanged.

Why measured productivity may lag behind capability

  • Adoption takes time: many companies are still testing AI or have no approved way to use it.
  • Implementation is organisational: integrating models with records, software and workflows can require substantial redesign.
  • Quality and risk controls consume time: fact-checking, privacy review, cybersecurity and legal accountability can offset part of the initial speed gain.
  • Demand can change: lower production costs may lead firms to offer more services rather than reduce labour.
  • Statistics arrive later: national productivity data combine thousands of sectors and firms, so isolated improvements may not be visible quickly.

How widely are UK companies adopting AI?

Adoption is shallow and unequal. Across UK businesses, around one in five firms report that they use AI or plan to use it. The proportion rises sharply with employer size:

Business group Using or planning to use AI Source and qualification
Firms with 250 or more employees 36% Reported UK business adoption measure
Firms with 50–249 employees 23% Reported UK business adoption measure
Firms with 5–9 employees 14% Reported UK business adoption measure
All businesses About one in five Use or plan to use AI

The Office for National Statistics measured adoption at 9% in 2023, using its then-current business survey definition. Differences between that figure and newer estimates can reflect changing survey questions, dates and the distinction between actual use and planned use; they should not be treated as a single continuous time series.

Larger employers generally have more budget for software, data engineering and training, and can spread those costs across many teams. Smaller firms may benefit from inexpensive general-purpose tools but often lack the time, expertise or governance capacity to integrate them safely. Adoption therefore says little by itself about how much output a firm obtains from AI.

What does AI mean for wages?

Specialised skills attract a premium

The OECD reports substantial wage premiums for workers with AI-specific skills. These premiums apply to people who can build, deploy, evaluate or manage AI systems and related data infrastructure, rather than to everyone whose occupation happens to be exposed to AI.

The premium can reflect scarce technical capability, responsibility for high-value systems and workers’ ability to combine AI with domain expertise. It does not prove that AI raises every skilled worker’s pay, nor that the premium will remain unchanged as more people acquire those skills.

Exposure has not yet translated into broad wage cuts or rises

For the much larger group of workers in jobs exposed to AI, the OECD finds minimal wage effects so far. Exposure means that AI could perform or assist with some tasks; it does not indicate that a worker has been replaced or that their bargaining position has changed.

Pay outcomes depend on whether productivity gains are shared with employees, whether firms face competition for labour, how easily workers can move to other jobs and whether AI complements or substitutes for their existing skills. The available evidence does not justify saying that AI has already caused a net fall in UK wages.

Is AI reducing UK hiring?

Early job-posting associations

One analysis found that a one-standard-deviation increase in occupational AI exposure was associated with a 3.9% fall in UK job-posting volume. The decline began around seven months after ChatGPT became available, and postings returned to prior levels after approximately 20 months. This is an association, not proof that AI caused the change; interest rates, economic conditions, restructuring and changing demand can also affect adverts.

A separate McKinsey analysis reported that adverts fell by 38% in high-exposure occupations and by 21% in low-exposure occupations between 2022 and 2025. The comparison indicates a larger decline in more exposed occupations during that period, but it does not isolate AI from other differences between those occupations or establish what happened to total employment.

Why fewer adverts do not equal mass unemployment

  • Firms may stop recruiting while retaining existing staff and changing their tasks.
  • One role can be redesigned into a different role, so the original advert disappears without the work disappearing.
  • Hiring can pause during a weak economy and resume later, as the return to earlier posting levels illustrates.
  • Productivity improvements can increase demand for a service, creating work elsewhere in the organisation or supply chain.
  • AI exposure is measured at occupation or task level and cannot show which individual workers were displaced.

Official assessments therefore do not conclude that AI has already caused a net fall in UK employment.

Which UK workers face the greatest exposure?

Risk is better understood through tasks than job titles. Exposure is higher where work consists of repeatable digital activities involving language, code, structured information or standardised analysis. It is lower where work depends heavily on physical presence, unpredictable environments, manual dexterity, face-to-face care or accountability that cannot be delegated to a model.

Exposure also varies inside an occupation. A junior analyst who prepares routine summaries may experience a different change from a senior analyst who sets research questions, checks evidence and advises a client. AI can remove part of the junior task bundle while increasing the value of judgement and relationship skills.

The most useful comparison uses four axes:

  1. Augmentation versus substitution: does AI assist a person’s work, or can the task be performed with fewer people?
  2. Occupation and skill level: which tasks are exposed, and how transferable are the worker’s skills?
  3. Firm size and management quality: can the employer integrate AI, train staff and redesign jobs responsibly?
  4. Short-run adjustment versus long-run productivity: what happens during implementation, and what happens after new products, processes and demand emerge?

What is happening to young workers?

UK digital-sector employment fell for the first time in a decade in 2024. Employment in computer programming among 16–24-year-olds fell by 44% in the same period. The UK Government explicitly says these changes cannot be directly attributed to AI.

Young workers may nevertheless face a distinctive transition problem: entry-level tasks are often the most structured and easiest to automate or assist. If those tasks disappear, employers may expect beginners to arrive with more experience, while fewer junior roles remain available for learning. Conversely, firms that use AI to expand output could create new opportunities for people who combine technical literacy with communication, security, data stewardship or sector knowledge.

The International Labour Organization’s 2026 review finds that productivity gains are real but uneven and often unverified. It reports limited large-scale displacement so far, while identifying inequality and reduced opportunities for younger workers as the main concerns.

How do UK workers perceive the change?

In 2025, the Office for National Statistics found that 28% of employed adults thought AI could make their job easier. Eleven per cent thought it could reduce their working hours without reducing pay, and 8% thought it could improve their job prospects.

These figures describe expectations rather than realised outcomes. They show that many workers see potential assistance, but fewer foresee a direct improvement in career prospects. Employers that communicate how AI will affect workload, training, evaluation and accountability can make those expectations more realistic.

What should workers do?

Build skills that travel with the technology

  • Learn how to use approved AI tools for drafting, analysis or coding, then verify outputs against authoritative information.
  • Develop domain knowledge, since subject expertise is needed to detect plausible but wrong answers.
  • Practise specifying tasks, constraints and quality criteria clearly; this improves results across changing tools.
  • Strengthen interpersonal, problem-solving and decision skills that are difficult to standardise.
  • Keep evidence of improved quality, turnaround time or customer outcomes rather than claiming a generic productivity gain.

Ask practical questions at work

  • Which tasks are being automated or assisted?
  • Who checks AI output and who is accountable for errors?
  • Will time saved reduce workload, increase output, or create capacity for training?
  • What data may be entered into the tool, and which information is prohibited?
  • How will performance and pay be assessed if AI changes the way work is produced?

What should employers measure?

Employers should separate tool performance from business performance. A useful pilot records baseline completion time, error rates, rework, customer outcomes, staff workload and security incidents. It then compares those measures after deployment, including the time spent checking or correcting outputs.

Managers should also examine distributional effects. If experienced staff become faster while junior staff lose opportunities to practise, the organisation may gain short-term output but weaken its future talent pipeline. Training, supervised use and redesigned progression paths can preserve learning while capturing efficiency.

What is established—and what remains uncertain?

Evidence now supports several careful conclusions: AI can speed up some UK tasks; specialised AI skills command wage premiums; adoption is higher among large firms; and hiring declines have been larger in some high-exposure occupations. Evidence does not yet establish a single national effect on employment, wages or productivity.

The main uncertainties concern scale, timing and distribution. It is not known how quickly smaller firms will adopt AI, how much checking will be required as systems change, whether productivity gains will be shared with workers, or whether new demand will offset reduced labour demand in particular occupations. The safest reading of current data is neither “AI changes nothing” nor “AI has already taken UK jobs.” It is a period of uneven task redesign in which outcomes depend heavily on skills, management and the choices organisations make.
