AI can help people reverse-engineer games and build cheats or bot farms, but current evidence does not show that AI powers every cheat—or establish what share of cheating involves AI. Cheating ranges from automated aiming and wallhacks to code injection and manipulated match data. Publishers counter it with layers of server analysis, client protections, system-level checks and enforcement, each carrying trade-offs for privacy, stability, performance and trust.
What counts as cheating in an online game?
Cheating is not one technique. It includes tools that give players information or actions they should not have, automation that plays for them, and manipulation of game or match data. The methods vary by game and genre; an approach that makes sense in a shooter may not apply to a sports game. Electronic Arts’ technical explainer describes several common categories.
- Aimbots and triggerbots: automate aiming or firing when a target meets a condition.
- Wallhacks and ESP: expose information about opponents or objects that should be hidden, such as their position behind a wall.
- Pixel bots and automated input: read screen pixels and issue actions, operating outside the game process rather than changing its code.
- Code injection: place or run code inside a game’s process to alter behavior or access information.
- Match-data manipulation: falsify or interfere with information used by the game; EA cites fake match information in EA SPORTS FC as an example.
EA groups cheats broadly as internal, acting within the game process, or external, acting outside it. Those categories describe where a method operates, not whether it uses AI.

AI can lower the effort needed to understand software and help would-be attackers develop tools. Riot says advances in AI-assisted reverse engineering have expanded the ranks of would-be hackers, and that abuse of access to game memory is being used to create cheats and sophisticated bot farms. That is Riot’s threat assessment, not an independent measure of the effect across the industry. Riot’s notice on game-memory access does not establish that all cheats are AI-generated or quantify AI’s share of cheating.

Riot says that, starting October 6, 2026, it will block unknown third-party applications from accessing memory by default in League of Legends, Teamfight Tactics and VALORANT. Riot says currently known and approved tools have an extended grace period until April 2027 to move affected features to official APIs, request data support or retire unsupported functions. The policy blocks unauthorized tools from interacting with the client; Riot says it does not automatically ban their users. It may also affect legitimate overlays and trackers that rely on direct memory access.
How do anti-cheat systems detect and disrupt cheating?
There is no single detector that can see everything a cheat does. A 2025 systematic review groups anti-cheat approaches by where they observe activity and how they protect the game. The practical differences are summarized below; the review compares methods on effectiveness, overhead, privacy and scalability, while noting that public technical details are often limited. Alangari and Alharbi’s 2025 review provides the broader framework.

| Approach | What it can observe or protect | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Server-side analysis | Server logs, player inputs, replays and match behavior. | Can assess behavior without relying solely on a player’s machine, but the available evidence and detection speed depend on what the game records and analyzes. |
| Client-side anti-tamper | Game-process state and signs of tampering, often supported by obfuscation. | Provides a view of the client but runs on a device an attacker may try to alter. |
| Kernel-level drivers | Activity at a deeper operating-system level, potentially including external tools that operate beyond the game process. | Greater system visibility may aid detection, but elevated access raises privacy, stability and player-trust concerns. |
| Hardware-assisted trusted execution | Security state or attestation tied to supported hardware and platform features. | Can strengthen confidence in a system’s security configuration, but depends on compatible hardware and settings. |
These approaches can be layered rather than treated as mutually exclusive winners. A server can flag suspicious behavior, a client component can detect tampering, and a hardware check can attest to selected security settings. Each adds a different signal; none guarantees perfect detection.
How do publishers enforce rules—and what do their figures mean?
Electronic Arts: Javelin AntiCheat
EA says Javelin uses specific detections, telemetry and protections against cheats acting internally and externally. The company says kernel access can help because some external cheats operate outside the game process, including at kernel level. EA also says Javelin runs only while a protected EA game is running and automatically uninstalls if all protected EA games are removed. These are statements about EA’s system, not a description of every anti-cheat driver. EA’s technical explainer

In a September 10, 2026 update, EA reported Javelin coverage across 20 titles, 57.1 million players safeguarded and 26.7 million cheat attempts prevented. EA also reported a “99%+ accuracy rate in cheat detection” and a stability error rate below 1%. These are EA’s operational figures; the company does not present them as independent, cross-industry measurements, and its accuracy figure is not an independently validated universal rate. EA said more than 4.8 million players enabled Secure Boot after it introduced configurable requirements. The update also described anti-DMA defenses and protections against input manipulation, malicious devices, macros and synthetic input. EA’s 2026 update
Activision: RICOCHET Anti-Cheat
Activision describes a sequence in which in-game mitigations disrupt suspected cheaters and collect behavioral information, followed by permanent account bans when appropriate. Its September 2025 update said more than 55,000 accounts had received in-game mitigations since August; that is a mitigation count, not a count of confirmed bans. The same update reported that teamers in the Top 250 remained below 5% at any given time after weekly purges. That figure concerns teaming in that ranked environment, not cheating in all games. Activision also describes Remote Attestation tied to Windows security features including TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot. Limited Matchmaking is an alarm that calls for examination, not proof that an account is a confirmed cheater. A player may also enter the limited pool because another member of their party has been placed there.

Riot: account enforcement and memory access
Riot reported that more than 3.6 million accounts had been banned for cheating during Vanguard’s first four years, as of September 2024. Riot said that figure excluded additional action against botting, boosting and intentionally queueing with cheaters. It is a publisher-reported count for VALORANT, not an estimate of the proportion of matches affected across online games. Riot’s Vanguard update

Publisher counts describe operations within particular games, definitions and time periods. They should not be combined into a league table or treated as a shared measure of cheating prevalence. EA describes its Match Infection Rate as a retrospective measure of how often an ordinary player might encounter a cheater in EA games; it said a feature rollout in Battlefield 2042 roughly halved that game’s metric. That is an EA-specific measure, not a cross-publisher rate. No comparable independent estimate establishes the fraction of all online matches affected by cheating in 2026.

Anti-cheat is an adaptive contest: attackers change tools and behavior, while publishers revise detection and enforcement. A system with broader access may see activity that a server cannot, but it also asks players to accept more software access on their own machines. Server analysis may avoid some client-level access, yet depends on the signals available to the publisher. Hardware requirements can strengthen attestation but exclude or inconvenience players whose systems do not meet them. The 2025 review identifies effectiveness, overhead, privacy and scalability as core comparison dimensions; compatibility and trust also matter to whether players can use and accept a system.
- Privacy and access: Ask what the anti-cheat can inspect, when it runs and what happens after uninstalling a protected game. EA’s stated behavior for Javelin is specific to EA’s product.
- Stability and compatibility: Drivers, hardware requirements and anti-cheat updates can conflict with other software or devices. EA reported resolving launch issues for 45,000 players within 48 hours after an AMD Anti-Lag compatibility fix in October 2025; this illustrates compatibility work, not cheating prevalence.
- False suspicion and appeal: A mitigation, warning or limited matchmaking placement is not necessarily a final finding. Activision explicitly describes Limited Matchmaking as an alarm for review.
- Legitimate third-party tools: A policy that restricts memory access can affect overlays and trackers as well as malicious software. Riot’s notice points affected tools toward official APIs, data requests or feature retirement.
There is no one-time fix. Effective defenses depend on combining evidence and adjusting to new behavior, while publishers must balance detection with system impact and explain how suspicion becomes enforcement. Reported bans, mitigations and accuracy rates can describe a publisher’s own program, but they do not answer how widespread cheating is across every game—or how much of it is AI-driven.
