AI is changing how engineering teams work, but faster individual coding does not automatically mean faster or more reliable software delivery. Evidence from DORA, Microsoft Research, and a 2026 study of engineering teams points to a consistent pattern: AI can help with routine work and developer experience, while the results depend on task fit, learning support, trust, and the systems teams use to review and ship code.
What AI is changing in day-to-day engineering work
AI coding tools can generate, explain, and modify code, helping developers move through some routine tasks more quickly. DORA’s 2025 study, based on nearly 5,000 technology professionals around the world and more than 100 hours of qualitative data, frames AI as an amplifier: it can extend an organization’s existing strengths, but it can also magnify weaknesses in its delivery systems. That is an organizational lens, not a prediction that every team will experience the same outcome. DORA’s 2025 State of AI-assisted Software Development Report
DORA reports that developers who use generative AI extensively also report more time in flow, greater job satisfaction, increased productivity, and less burnout. But its findings also describe a “vacuum hypothesis”: AI may speed up enjoyable, valuable tasks without reducing repetitive toil, bureaucracy, or meetings. Time freed in one part of the job does not necessarily become time available for deeper engineering work.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →That distinction matters because code generation is only one part of software development. Work still includes understanding requirements, integrating changes, reviewing code, testing, maintaining systems, and coordinating with colleagues. If AI increases the volume of proposed code without improving those surrounding activities, individual assistance may not translate into better delivery.

Why faster coding may not improve delivery
AI adoption and delivery outcomes do not move in lockstep in DORA’s analysis. DORA reports that a 25% increase in AI adoption is associated with a 1.5% decrease in delivery throughput and a 7.2% decrease in delivery stability. These are reported associations, not proof that AI caused either change. DORA suggests that larger code batches and added review friction may be part of the explanation. DORA’s AI research findings
A useful way to understand the gap is to separate individual output from the flow of changes through a team. More code drafted per developer can create more work for reviewers, testers, and maintainers. If changes arrive in larger batches, defects may be harder to isolate and feedback may arrive later. Delivery depends on the whole system, not just the speed of the person writing a change.
Trust is another constraint. DORA reports that 39% of developers trust AI outputs “a little” or “not at all.” Tool access alone does not establish confidence in generated code, nor does confidence guarantee correctness. Teams need review and testing practices that allow developers to use AI without treating its output as authoritative.

What the evidence says about collaboration and developer experience
Microsoft Research’s SPACE work evaluates developer experience across Satisfaction, Performance, Activity, Collaboration, and Efficiency. The August 2025 study draws on survey responses from more than 500 developers as well as interviews and observational studies. It finds that developers often perceive productivity gains on routine tasks, but the experience varies with task complexity, usage patterns, and team adoption. The researchers report less evidence of AI changing collaboration than of changes in reported efficiency and satisfaction, and emphasize organizational support and peer learning. Microsoft Research’s SPACE study
A 2026 ICSE study adds a qualitative view of how teams adopt AI. Paired interviews with 54 developers across 27 teams found that use patterns related to how developers perceived AI—as a collaborator or as a feature—whether they experimented or took a conservative approach, and whether they persisted adaptively when problems arose or quickly abandoned the tools. The findings suggest that adoption is partly a learning process, not simply a decision to enable software. ICSE 2026 research track
These studies use different methods and populations, so their findings should not be combined into one productivity score. Surveys capture reported experience, interviews reveal how people approach adoption, and neither alone establishes a universal effect on engineering performance.

Will AI replace software engineers?
The evidence summarized here does not establish a reliable net employment forecast or prove that AI will replace engineering teams. It examines developer experience, adoption, and delivery outcomes—not a controlled long-term measure of engineering jobs eliminated or created.

AI can assist with some coding tasks, but engineering work also requires decisions about system behavior, requirements, risk, testing, and maintenance. The available findings support treating AI as a capability that changes parts of the workflow, rather than assuming that tool adoption alone determines the future size or composition of engineering teams.

Set expectations and make room to learn
Explain what the organization expects teams to learn, how AI use relates to job security, and where experimentation is encouraged. DORA reports that dedicated work time for experimentation is associated with a 131% increase in team AI adoption; this is an association in its research, not a guaranteed result for every organization. Protected practice time and peer learning can help developers build judgment about when AI is useful and how to respond when it fails.

Define safe and acceptable use
Make rules explicit for sensitive data, security, and permitted use cases. Clear policies give developers a framework for using tools safely instead of leaving individuals to guess which contexts are acceptable. DORA links clear policies with increased adoption, but policy should clarify boundaries rather than substitute for engineering judgment.
Keep review, testing, and feedback loops strong
Generated code still needs the same scrutiny as other code. Maintain effective code review, automated tests, and continuous integration so defects are caught early and changes remain small enough to understand. DORA identifies fast, high-quality feedback loops as a safeguard against errors and instability.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMeasure outcomes at more than one level
Do not use individual coding speed as a stand-in for team performance. Track delivery outcomes and reliability alongside developer experience and collaboration. SPACE’s five dimensions make clear that productivity is multidimensional; DORA’s delivery associations illustrate why local efficiency alone is an incomplete measure.
How to evaluate an AI rollout
There is no single adoption pattern that fits every team, and the cited sources do not establish a controlled winner among current commercial tools. Evaluate a rollout against the work and constraints of the team:
- Task fit: Identify which work is routine and suitable for assistance, and where complexity or risk demands more human analysis.
- Learning support: Give developers time to experiment, share effective practices, and learn from failures rather than expecting immediate uniform use.
- Privacy and security: Confirm that proposed use complies with the organization’s data and security rules.
- Review capacity: Check whether reviewers, tests, and continuous integration can handle the changes the tools help produce.
- Team-level results: Compare individual experience with delivery throughput, stability, and collaboration instead of assuming one measure predicts the others.
GitHub’s May 2025 leadership resource, drawing on its 2024 Octoverse report, describes AI coding tools as central to software development and discusses agents that can plan, generate, and validate code. GitHub also promotes a 55% productivity figure. That is a vendor-authored claim, not independent proof of a general productivity gain. GitHub’s leadership resource on AI
