AI is making parts of familiar cyber attacks faster, more scalable, and easier to adapt—not making every intrusion autonomous. It can help attackers research targets, find vulnerabilities, tailor phishing, generate basic malware, and process stolen data. At the same time, AI models, connected applications, data, and software dependencies can become targets themselves. Organizations should prepare for more efficient attacks while continuing to prioritize fundamentals such as rapid patching, strong identity controls, monitoring, and incident readiness.

How AI is changing familiar cyber attacks

The main near-term change is an efficiency boost across steps attackers already use. The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) assesses that threat actors are using AI to improve reconnaissance, vulnerability research and exploit development, social engineering, basic malware generation, and analysis of exfiltrated data. Its forecast through 2027 is that AI will increase the frequency and impact of intrusions chiefly by improving existing tactics, not by creating an entirely new class of attack.

That can matter even when a tool handles only one part of an operation. Faster research can help an attacker identify exposed systems; language generation can help tailor deceptive messages; and automation can speed up repetitive work. A more efficient workflow may let an operator attempt more targets or adjust an approach more quickly. These are capabilities and threat assessments, not a measure of how often AI causes successful intrusions across all organizations.

Where AI can assist an intrusion

  • Reconnaissance: organizing public or collected information to identify people, systems, and likely points of entry.
  • Vulnerability work: helping search for weaknesses, develop exploits, or adapt known techniques. The NCSC warns that exploitation of known flaws may increase as these tasks become more efficient.
  • Social engineering: generating or customizing phishing and impersonation content. Microsoft’s 2025 Digital Defense Report describes AI-automated phishing and multi-stage attack chains, based on Microsoft’s own telemetry and response work.
  • Malware and stolen data: assisting with basic malware creation or helping sort and interpret data taken from a victim.

These capabilities do not make ordinary weaknesses obsolete. Microsoft’s 2025 report also describes attacks that exploit familiar gaps, including exposed web assets and remote services. A polished phishing message or faster exploit development still needs an opportunity—such as a vulnerable system, a compromised account, or an unsafe configuration.

Why AI systems add another attack surface

AI can be used to attack conventional enterprise systems, but an organization’s AI deployment can also be a target. The risk grows when a model can access company data, call applications, or influence operational processes. In that setting, attackers may target the model, the data it uses, the software around it, or the connections that let it act.

Attacks against connected AI systems

  • Prompt injection: malicious or untrusted instructions may cause a system to behave in unintended ways. The NCSC warns that this can lead to confidential information being disclosed or to unintended actions, particularly where systems accept unchecked input.
  • Software flaws and unsafe data handling: weaknesses in the AI application or its integration can expose information or provide a route into connected services.
  • Supply-chain compromise: models, data, libraries, and other dependencies may introduce risk if they are compromised or inadequately managed.
  • Data poisoning: manipulated data can undermine the behavior or reliability of an AI system.

These risks overlap with AI-assisted attacks but are not the same claim: using AI to attack a company’s systems is different from attacking the company’s AI system. The UK NCSC’s executive guidance and its secure AI development guidelines address these connected but distinct exposures.

Are AI-driven cyber attacks fully automated?

Not generally, based on the cited assessments. The UK NCSC says fully automated, end-to-end advanced cyber attacks are unlikely through 2027. It expects skilled actors to remain involved in advanced operations even as they automate individual tasks, including finding and exploiting vulnerabilities, changing malware, and adjusting infrastructure to evade detection.

Google Threat Intelligence Group (GTIG) reported on 11 May 2026 that it had identified a criminal actor using a zero-day exploit that GTIG believed had been developed with AI. GTIG also described AI-accelerated malware and infrastructure development, malware that can use a model to interpret system state and generate commands, and attacks against AI environments and software dependencies. The exploit’s AI authorship is GTIG’s belief, not conclusive proof that AI created it.

The practical distinction is between automating a stage and automating an operation. AI may help a person carry out a task or adjust a tool without independently planning and completing an advanced intrusion from start to finish. The NCSC warns that if defensive improvements lag, critical systems could be more vulnerable by 2027; that is a conditional forecast, not evidence that every organization is already facing autonomous attacks.

What the reported numbers do—and do not—show

Published figures describe different geographies, datasets, and categories. They should not be combined into a global estimate of AI-driven attack prevalence.

Figure What it measures What it does not establish
18% increase The New Zealand NCSC’s 2026 Cyber Threat Report says criminal or financially motivated incidents classified as potentially of national significance increased by 18% in New Zealand last year. This is not a global figure and is not an AI-attributed increase.
78% Microsoft’s 2026 Digital Defense Report says 78% of observed attack techniques against critical infrastructure used cloud identity abuse. This is Microsoft’s observation within a critical-infrastructure scope; it does not show that AI caused those techniques.

The NCSC forecast and GTIG’s reported example provide judgments and case observations rather than a comparable global count. The cited sources do not establish a harmonized worldwide estimate of how many attacks are AI-driven or a causal estimate of AI’s effect on successful intrusion rates.

Defenses to prioritize

AI changes the speed and shape of some threats, but the most useful response combines proven security controls with protections for AI systems across their lifecycle.

1. Reduce exposure and patch quickly

Maintain an accurate inventory of internet-facing assets and dependencies, prioritize known exploited vulnerabilities, and shorten the time between disclosure and remediation. The NCSC warns that AI could increase exploitation of known unpatched flaws and further reduce the time between disclosure and exploitation, which it says has already shrunk to days. A patching process should identify an affected asset, assign an owner, set remediation priority, and verify the fix rather than treating an update as complete when it is merely scheduled.

  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.

  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.

2. Protect identities and sensitive data

Use strong identity controls, restrict privileged access to what each role needs, and avoid credential reuse. Review what data AI applications can access and where that data goes, including any third-party service receiving it. The NCSC identifies weak identity management, weak encryption, and extensive data collection as risks when AI is integrated into organizations.

3. Secure AI throughout its lifecycle

Apply threat modeling and secure design before deployment, then manage data, model, and software dependencies as part of the supply chain. Protect the infrastructure and models used in production; maintain update management, logging, monitoring, information sharing, and incident processes after launch. Joint NCSC/CISA and international-agency guidelines organize secure AI practices across design, development, deployment, and operation, rather than treating security as a one-time pre-launch check.

4. Constrain what AI integrations can do

Assess whether untrusted input could cause a model or connected tool to disclose information or take an unintended action. Validate inputs and outputs, limit permissions and available actions, and avoid allowing unchecked model output to trigger consequential operations. Include prompt injection, data poisoning, software flaws, and compromised dependencies in threat models for systems that connect AI to internal data or applications.

5. Monitor across systems and prepare to respond

Assign leadership responsibility for AI and machine-learning security, understand critical assets and potential business impact, assess suppliers, and include AI-related scenarios in incident planning. Microsoft’s 2026 report argues that correlating telemetry across endpoint, identity, cloud, application, email, and network can reveal patterns missed by siloed analysis. This is Microsoft’s recommendation; the report does not make it a universal comparative result.

New Zealand NCSC Director-General’s message to leaders is: “My message to leaders is that cyber security needs your attention now more than ever”. For organizations adopting AI, that means making security ownership part of the project and operating workflow—not waiting until a tool is already connected to sensitive systems.
