AI helps expose illegal wildlife trade online by scanning enormous volumes of posts, listings, messages and images for signals that human reviewers would struggle to find consistently. Language models can match known and newly discovered trade terms; image-recognition systems can identify species or wildlife products; and automated tools can prioritize suspicious content for trained staff, conservation experts, volunteers and law-enforcement investigators. These systems support policy enforcement and investigations, but a computer flag is not proof that a crime occurred, and published counts of blocked listings or screened images do not yet show how much trafficking has been prevented overall.
What AI actually does in online wildlife-trade enforcement
Online wildlife crime is not confined to a single marketplace. CITES describes internet-linked wildlife crime across online marketplaces, social networks, messaging services, peer-to-peer channels, email, and both public and dark-web environments. Sellers may advertise a live animal, a body part, a plant, or a finished product; move a conversation into private messages; and use several accounts or services to complete one transaction.
AI is useful because it can examine text and images at a scale that manual review cannot match. A platform can use software to search for prohibited species names, code words, misspellings, prices, locations and other clues. Image models can compare uploaded photographs with examples of target animals or products such as ivory, skins or other protected materials. The output is normally a flag, score or queue position for human action, not an automatic legal finding.

Detection is different from proving a crime
A suspicious post may involve a legal species, a permitted transaction, an antique covered by a jurisdictional exception, a misidentified object, or a joke. Legality can depend on the species, country, permits, chain of custody and context. For that reason, the Coalition to End Wildlife Trafficking Online describes automated filters as one part of a system that also includes standardized policies, trained staff and user reporting. Human reviewers and, when appropriate, authorities must assess the surrounding facts.

How is AI used to detect illegal wildlife trade online?
A practical detection program is a loop in which machines find patterns, people add context, and the resulting cases improve the next search. The stages below can operate on one platform or across several cooperating services.
1. Collect signals from every relevant channel
Teams first define which services and content types are in scope: public listings, captions, comments, profile names, hashtags, images, videos, direct messages where access is lawful, and links between accounts. CITES’s broad definition matters because a seller may recruit customers on a social network, negotiate in a messaging app and take payment through a separate service. Looking at only one site can miss the connection.
2. Search language, names and evasion terms
Language-based tools scan titles, descriptions, comments and other text for species names, product terms and phrases associated with prohibited trade. They can handle spelling variations, abbreviations and multiple languages when those capabilities have been developed and tested. Volunteers and specialists are important here: the Coalition reports that volunteers identify suspicious listings and emerging evasion terms, and those findings can be used to improve reporting rules and train AI systems.

A post may mention an animal for educational purposes, use a common name that refers to several species, or contain a code word with an innocent meaning in another community. Systems therefore combine language clues with account history, location, images and other signals before assigning priority.
3. Recognize species and wildlife products in images
Image-recognition models can compare photographs with labeled examples of animals, plants and manufactured products made from wildlife. This is particularly useful when a seller avoids explicit words or uses a photograph copied from another listing. Models may identify a visual category, highlight regions of an image that influenced the result, or rank the image for expert review.

Image AI has boundaries. A low-resolution photograph, unusual angle, damaged product, lighting change or deliberate alteration can reduce reliability. A model trained on one set of species, products or regions will not automatically work for another. The system described by WWF for Baidu and IFAW’s AI Guardian of Endangered Species 2.0 recognized 34 species and reported an average identification accuracy of 86 percent for that particular system. That figure should not be treated as a universal accuracy rate for wildlife-detection software.
4. Add reports and specialist knowledge
People supply information that automated systems cannot reliably infer. Conservation groups can explain how a species or product is traded, while trained platform employees can interpret local language and policy. Users and volunteers can report suspicious advertisements, notice new seller aliases and identify images that have been reused. The Coalition’s 2024 progress update reports more than 38,000 volunteer reports and more than 4,000 shared search terms. Those inputs help expand detection coverage and reveal how traffickers change their wording.

5. Prioritize content for trained review
Platforms can combine text scores, image scores, account relationships, user reports and other policy signals into a review queue. Reviewers then check the listing against the platform’s prohibited-wildlife rules and available evidence. Possible actions include requesting more information, removing a post, suspending an account, preserving records or referring a case to a conservation organization or law enforcement.
Automation should be calibrated for the cost of mistakes. Missing a high-risk listing can allow a sale to proceed, while wrongly removing lawful content can harm users and obscure genuine reports. Clear escalation rules, appeal paths and periodic audits help keep the process accountable.
6. Connect signals across services for investigations
Investigators often need to connect activity that appears unrelated on the surface. INTERPOL’s Operation Thunder 2024 showed suspects using multiple profiles and linked accounts across social platforms and marketplaces. Shared identifiers, reused photographs, contact details, shipping information or payment clues can help authorities connect those profiles, subject to applicable law and evidence-handling requirements.

INTERPOL also emphasizes information-sharing and coordinated operations. A platform flag becomes more useful when investigators can lawfully combine it with reports from other services, customs records, seizures and field intelligence. AI can help organize and prioritize those leads, but investigators still establish identity, jurisdiction and admissible evidence.
Can AI identify illegal wildlife listings from photos?
Yes, it can identify visual patterns associated with target species or products, even when the listing text is vague. In the example reported by WWF in 2025, AI Guardian of Endangered Species 2.0 screened 430,000 suspicious images, identified 40,000 images of target wildlife products and facilitated 15,000 illegal online postings for removal. The system covered 34 species and reported an average identification accuracy of 86 percent.
Those numbers describe one named system and its reported operating results. They do not establish that every image was illegal, that every illegal image was found, or that removals led to a lasting reduction in trafficking. A photo can be reused, staged, mislabeled or too ambiguous for a confident result. Human confirmation remains necessary before consequential action, especially where a false positive could affect a legitimate seller or an investigation.
How do platforms find wildlife sales hidden in social-media posts?
Hidden sales often leave indirect traces. A platform can search captions and comments for changing code words, then use image matching to find the same photograph under different accounts. Reports from volunteers may reveal a new euphemism or seller alias. Account-link analysis can connect profiles that share contact details, images or behavior. Reviewers then compare these signals with policy rules and, where appropriate, refer a coordinated case to authorities.
This is an adaptation problem rather than a one-time filter. CITES notes that techniques for evading law enforcement evolve, and INTERPOL has documented multiple profiles and linked accounts. Detection teams therefore need a process for adding new terms, retraining or retuning models, checking regional language coverage and monitoring whether sellers migrate to another channel after a removal.

What systems and workflows are publicly documented?
Public descriptions show complementary approaches rather than a controlled product comparison. The following table keeps the evidence separate so that a screening count is not mistaken for an accuracy test or an enforcement outcome.
| Approach | Main input | Human and policy role | Publicly reported evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coalition to End Wildlife Trafficking Online | Search terms, user and volunteer reports, platform content and automated filters | Standardized prohibited-wildlife policies, trained company staff, review and referrals | 24.1 million prohibited wildlife listings and suspected illicit sellers blocked from March 2018 through September 2024; more than 50 digital platforms across over 40 member companies; 38,000 volunteer reports; 3,050 staff trained; more than 4,000 shared search terms |
| eBay image-detection work described by WWF | Images of wildlife products | Model development paired with platform enforcement processes | WWF describes the development of image models; the cited material does not provide a comparable accuracy or trafficking-reduction estimate |
| Baidu and IFAW AI Guardian of Endangered Species 2.0 | Photographs and other suspicious images | Identification results support review and removal of postings | 34 species recognized, 430,000 suspicious images screened, 40,000 target-product images identified and 15,000 illegal online postings facilitated for removal; average identification accuracy reported as 86 percent for this system |
The figures are not interchangeable. A blocked-listing total measures an operational action, an image-screening total measures workload, an identification count measures model output, and an accuracy percentage depends on the test conditions and labels used. None alone measures the size of the underlying market.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What do the headline numbers tell us—and what do they not tell us?
The Coalition’s cumulative figure of 24.1 million blocked listings and suspected illicit sellers, reported for March 2018 to September 2024, shows the scale of platform action. It does not show how many listings were duplicates, how many would have been illegal under a particular jurisdiction, whether sellers moved elsewhere or how many attempted sales were prevented.
CITES summarized a six-week IFAW investigation in 2008 that tracked 7,122 online listings across eight countries. CITES explicitly cautioned that the project assessed the scope of online trade rather than counting every illegal item online at one moment. The example illustrates why a sample or a monitoring period cannot be read as a complete market census.

UNODC’s 2024 World Wildlife Crime Report documented illegal trade in 162 countries and territories from 2015 through 2021, affecting around 4,000 plant and animal species. The report relies on seizure records, which represent detected and recorded cases. UNODC warns that seizure trends can be influenced by enforcement effort, investigative priorities, reporting quality and other factors besides the underlying level of trade.

Taken together, these sources support a careful conclusion: AI and coordinated enforcement can increase the number and speed of suspicious items found and acted on, but the public evidence cited here does not provide a causal estimate of how much AI has reduced total wildlife trafficking.
Common failure modes and safeguards
False positives and ambiguous legality
A species name may be used in a news story, an educational post or a lawful sale with permits. Models should route uncertain cases to reviewers, preserve the context that triggered the flag and provide a way to challenge an incorrect removal. Review policies should distinguish a platform-rule violation from evidence of a criminal offense.
False negatives and changing language
Sellers can omit species names, use code words, crop images or move conversations into private channels. Maintaining a shared vocabulary, accepting volunteer reports and checking newly observed aliases reduce—but do not eliminate—blind spots. Coverage should be measured by language, species, product type and platform rather than assumed from a single overall score.

Accuracy varies with the species list, image quality, language, geography and training data. The 86 percent result reported for AI Guardian 2.0 belongs to that system and its evaluation context. Publishing one number without those qualifications can create false confidence and encourage inappropriate automation.
Fragmented evidence
One seller may use several accounts and services, while one image may appear in many listings. Investigators need lawful methods for preserving timestamps, URLs, account relationships and original files. Cross-platform cooperation and coordinated operations can turn separate alerts into an evidence trail.
Privacy, access and governance
Programs should limit collection to a defined purpose, control who can see personal data, document retention periods and follow the law governing private communications. CITES’s Illegal Trade Database is access-restricted to verified government and ICCWC representatives; it should not be described as an open public dataset. Governance also requires audit logs, reviewer training and a process for correcting model or policy errors.
What a responsible AI wildlife-trade program needs
- Clear policy definitions: specify prohibited species, products, jurisdictions and permit exceptions before building detection rules.
- Multiple signals: combine text, images, reports, account links and context instead of relying on one keyword or model score.
- Human review: use trained staff and conservation expertise for uncertain or high-impact decisions.
- Continuous updating: add new evasion terms, languages, species examples and image variations as tactics change.
- Evidence preservation: record the original content, time, account relationships and review decision for lawful investigation.
- Measured outcomes: report screenings, flags, removals, referrals and confirmed cases separately, with dates and scope.
- Impact caution: avoid claiming that a larger block count proves a reduction in trafficking unless a credible evaluation supports that conclusion.
The practical takeaway
AI gives conservationists, platforms and investigators a way to search text and images continuously, discover new trade language and connect activity spread across services. Its strongest role is triage and pattern discovery: finding material that trained people can verify and act on. Effective disruption still depends on platform rules, volunteers, specialists, coordinated information-sharing and law enforcement. Published operational totals show substantial activity, but they are not the same as proof that online wildlife trafficking has been reduced.
