How do AI companies make money? Most use a mix of four mechanisms: usage-metered APIs, recurring consumer or workplace subscriptions, enterprise contracts that combine seats with consumption, and cloud or strategic partnerships. Each sells a different form of value. APIs charge for what software actually uses; subscriptions charge for ongoing access; enterprise agreements package governance and support with negotiated billing; partnerships can combine investment, infrastructure spending, licensing and distribution.
These mechanisms explain how money can flow, not how profitable any particular company is. Public price sheets and partnership announcements do not reveal a company’s complete revenue mix, margins or cash costs.
The four main ways AI companies sell access
AI businesses usually monetize the model, the interface around it, or the infrastructure and distribution needed to deliver it. A single customer may pay through several mechanisms at once—for example, employee seats plus token consumption, with workloads routed through a cloud marketplace.

How AI companies make money from APIs
An API lets a developer send a request to a hosted model and receive a response inside its own software. The provider meters consumption rather than charging only for access. OpenAI’s official API pricing documentation lists rates by model and distinguishes input tokens, output tokens and, where offered, cached input. Some modalities and built-in tools have their own charges.

What is measured
- Input tokens: the prompt, system instructions, retrieved documents and other text sent to the model.
- Output tokens: the generated response or structured result.
- Cached input: repeated context that qualifies for a lower rate on models that support it.
- Modalities: audio, image or other non-text inputs and outputs, when the selected model prices them separately.
- Tools: built-in retrieval, browsing, code execution or other services that may add a charge beyond model tokens.
The same documentation says the Responses API, Chat Completions API, Realtime API, Batch API and Assistants API are not priced as separate access fees: the selected model’s token rates determine the model charge. A tool used through one of those interfaces can still carry its own listed fee.
Why API bills vary so widely
Two applications making the same number of requests can have very different bills. Long conversation history, large retrieved documents and verbose outputs increase token consumption. A short classification prompt may cost far less than an agent that repeatedly calls a model, executes tools and sends the resulting context back for another turn.
To estimate an API budget, measure a representative workload rather than multiplying requests by a headline rate:
- Record the number of requests over a realistic day or month.
- Measure average and worst-case input and output tokens separately.
- Identify requests that repeat large context and may qualify for cached-input pricing.
- List every tool, audio, image or other modality used in the workflow.
- Apply the current price for the exact model and region or service tier you intend to use.
- Add a contingency for retries, traffic spikes and longer-than-average responses.
API catalogs and rates change. Official pricing pages can include dated promotional prices or end dates, so any calculation should be labeled with the date it was made and checked again before launch. One model’s rate is not a stable industry average.

Do AI companies make money from subscriptions?
Yes. Consumer and workplace subscriptions charge a recurring fee for an account or seat, usually bundling a chat interface, higher limits, priority access, collaboration features or administrative controls. The subscription makes revenue more predictable than purely metered API traffic, while the provider manages the cost of serving a range of usage levels.
A subscription is not automatically unlimited
Plans can impose message caps, rate limits, model-specific access, fair-use rules or temporary restrictions during high demand. A paid seat therefore does not prove that every request is included at no extra cost. Buyers should read the plan’s usage language and identify what happens when a limit is reached.
Why subscriptions appeal to providers
- Recurring billing: monthly or annual renewals create a forecastable customer relationship.
- Bundling: features that would be difficult to meter individually can be sold in one plan.
- Price discrimination: light users and heavy users can select different tiers.
- Distribution: a polished application reaches users who would never integrate an API.
A subscription price alone does not reveal margin. Serving a heavy user can cost much more than serving a light user, and the provider also pays for research, staff, data, safety systems, support and infrastructure.
How enterprise AI contracts work
Enterprise purchasing extends beyond a public plan. A contract can combine seats, organization-wide controls, support, data-handling commitments, deployment requirements, spend limits and measured consumption. Procurement teams should compare the commercial structure—not just the advertised seat price.

Seat fees and token charges can be separate
Anthropic’s current Enterprise billing documentation provides a concrete example: the seat fee gives users access, but usage is billed separately at standard API token rates. In that arrangement, paying for a seat does not include unlimited model consumption.
Prepaid credits versus monthly invoicing
The same documentation describes two payment paths:
- Self-serve Enterprise: the organization prepays shared credits that users draw down collectively.
- Sales-assisted Enterprise: the provider bills actual consumption monthly in arrears.
Usage is aggregated across the organization rather than assigning each person an isolated token allowance. That matters when one department’s automation consumes far more than another department’s occasional chat use.
Questions to ask before signing
- What does the seat or platform fee include, and what is metered separately?
- Is consumption measured in input and output tokens, requests, compute time or another unit?
- Are credits shared across the organization, and do they expire?
- Is payment prepaid, invoiced after use, or split between a commitment and overage?
- Which models, tools and modalities are covered by the agreement?
- What controls exist for per-team budgets, rate limits and approval workflows?
- Where is data stored and processed, and which deployment options are available?
- What support response times, service levels, renewal terms and termination rights apply?
These questions expose the difference between a low-looking seat price and a contract whose total cost rises with usage or minimum commitments.

How cloud and strategic partnerships create revenue
Large AI partnerships can have several layers at once. A cloud provider may invest capital, commit to purchase computing capacity, host a model, distribute it through a marketplace, license intellectual property or exchange other services. The AI developer gains infrastructure and reach; the cloud provider can gain demand, differentiated products and a share of commercial activity.
A 2025 Federal Trade Commission report on cloud-service-provider and AI-developer partnerships records publicly reported historical investment figures of $13.75 billion for Microsoft–OpenAI, $8 billion for Amazon–Anthropic and $2.55 billion for Alphabet/Google–Anthropic. These are figures presented in the report’s reporting context, not measurements of current revenue, current valuation or current deal value.
The FTC also cautioned that public information and company marketing left gaps about the nature of the partnerships, including the market impact and more granular details of what each side exchanged. A reported investment should therefore not be treated as a customer payment or as proof of a company’s annual sales.

Microsoft’s April 27, 2026 announcement about an amended agreement with OpenAI illustrates how layered arrangements evolve. Microsoft said it remains OpenAI’s primary cloud partner; OpenAI products will ship first on Azure unless Microsoft cannot and chooses not to support the required capabilities. The announcement also said OpenAI can serve products across any cloud provider, Microsoft will continue to license OpenAI intellectual property through 2032 on a non-exclusive basis, and OpenAI revenue-share payments to Microsoft will continue through 2030 subject to a cap.

Those are statements in Microsoft’s announcement, not a complete public contract. They show why partnership economics should be described with the announcing party, date and exact scope attached.
Revenue is not the same as profit
API prices, subscription fees and partnership announcements show possible sources of revenue. They do not establish profitability. AI companies incur costs for model training, specialized chips, data-center capacity, networking, electricity, storage, employees, safety evaluations, customer support and sales. A rapidly growing usage line can coexist with high infrastructure spending.
Likewise, a cloud investment may be exchanged for future capacity, preferred distribution, licensing rights or other considerations rather than booked immediately as ordinary product revenue. Without audited financial statements that separate these items, outsiders cannot calculate a company’s revenue share by simply adding public list prices.

There is no universally best model. Variable workloads favor metering; stable teams may value a subscription; organizations needing controls often require a negotiated contract; and frontier model developers may use partnerships to secure capital and compute. The right choice depends on workload variability, governance, deployment, bargaining power and tolerance for vendor dependence.
Emerging ideas: revenue sharing as infrastructure
An arXiv preprint published March 20, 2026, titled “Revenue-Sharing as Infrastructure: A Distributed Business Model for Generative AI Platforms,” proposes a theoretical model in which platform participants share revenue as part of the infrastructure arrangement. It is a proposal, not evidence that the market has adopted a standard revenue-sharing system. Treat it as a way to think about incentives rather than as a documented revenue stream for a named company.
What the public record can—and cannot—tell you
- Provider documentation can show how a product bills a particular customer.
- Enterprise documentation can reveal whether seats include usage and whether credits are prepaid or invoiced after consumption.
- Regulatory reports can compile publicly reported investments and identify information gaps.
- Company announcements can describe selected partnership terms, but usually not every commercial clause.
- None of these sources alone gives a complete company-wide revenue mix or profitability calculation.
The most accurate answer to “How do AI companies make money?” is therefore a layered one: they sell measured model usage, recurring access, negotiated organizational capacity and, in some cases, infrastructure and distribution relationships. To understand a specific company, you must identify which layers it offers and then find financial disclosures that quantify them.
