AI companies look for suspicious activity connected to their services, investigate it alongside platform reports and open-source evidence, then enforce their rules and share findings. The investigation usually concerns more than AI-generated text: it may examine the accounts, websites, identities, and coordination around it. A takedown shows that a company acted; it does not, by itself, prove that an operation changed public opinion.

How do companies spot AI-assisted disinformation campaigns?

Detection is an investigation, not simply a filter that identifies a misleading sentence. Companies can begin with activity visible on their own services, but public accounts describe a wider process that combines service evidence with information from researchers, other platforms, and relevant partners.

1. A signal prompts closer review

Suspicious activity associated with a company’s AI service may lead investigators to examine how the service was used, which accounts were involved, and whether the activity appears coordinated. OpenAI said in May 2024 that it had also used its own models to help detect and understand abuse. That disclosure does not establish that a model independently identifies covert operations or that the same detection system is used across providers.

2. Investigators combine evidence sources

OpenAI has said its investigations benefited from years of detailed reporting by distribution platforms and the open-source community, as well as its own work. It also said it shares detailed threat indicators with industry peers. This matters because evidence from one service may show only part of an operation; reports and observations from elsewhere can help investigators assess whether activity is connected.

Meta’s Threat Research Indicator Repository publishes indicators of compromise and behavioral signatures associated with its adversarial threat reports. Its Online Operations Kill Chain organizes tactics and indicators around how operators establish an online presence, disguise activity, engage audiences, and respond to takedowns. These public materials can help outside researchers look for related activity, but they are not a complete account of Meta’s internal detection methods.

3. The investigation looks beyond generated text

AI may help operators draft comments or articles, translate and edit material, create personas, or write internal reports. But the broader operation may also involve fake identities, social accounts, websites, human intermediaries, and efforts to place content on multiple platforms. Finding AI-assisted material is therefore not the same as establishing who organized it, how it was distributed, or whether separate accounts were coordinated.

What happens when an AI company finds a covert influence operation?

Companies can enforce their service rules, investigate associated activity, and share threat information. The scope of a public account depends on what the company says it found; public disclosures do not reveal every internal step or show that all providers coordinated their actions.

Enforcement and monitoring

In August 2024, OpenAI reported identifying a cluster of accounts associated with the Iranian Storm-2035 operation, banning those accounts, monitoring for further attempts, and sharing intelligence with government, campaign, and industry stakeholders. In its October 8, 2026 report, OpenAI described investigations of Russian-linked and Iranian operations that examined activity beyond AI-generated material, including account clusters, websites, purported organizations, personas, and content distributed across platforms. These are OpenAI’s descriptions and assessments of the cases.

Indicators and findings may be shared

OpenAI has described sharing threat intelligence with relevant stakeholders and industry peers. Meta’s repository gives outside researchers access to published indicators and behavioral signatures. Sharing can support detection beyond the company that first investigated an operation, though public reporting does not establish how much information each provider receives or exchanges in any particular case.

Attribution requires corroboration

Association with an operation should not be inferred from a single link or interaction. Meta cautions that an account sharing a link connected to an operation or engaging with its content is not enough, on its own, to attribute that account to the campaign. Investigators need corroborating evidence before drawing that conclusion.

How can readers tell whether an operation had real reach?

Detection, removal, and influence are different questions. An account ban confirms enforcement, not audience persuasion. To assess reach, look for evidence of where material spread, who amplified it, and whether it led to observable consequences—not just how much content was produced.

Use observable spread as a framework

Brookings’ 2020 Breakout Scale divides operations into six categories, progressing from activity limited to a platform or community toward cross-platform spread, amplification by traditional media or high-profile figures, and concrete action or calls for violence. Its stated purpose is to compare likely impact using evidence that is observable, replicable, and verifiable. It is a framework for examining evidence, not a universal proof that an operation did or did not influence people.

Separate company assessments from demonstrated effects

In its October 8, 2026 report, OpenAI rated the Russian Dark Clark operation Category 5 on the Breakout Scale. It rated the social-commenting component of the Iranian Bogus Bylines operation Category 2 and its article-placement component Category 4. These are OpenAI’s judgments using the framework, not independently verified measurements of audience effects. The different ratings also show why account counts, post volume, or views alone cannot stand in for demonstrated influence.

OpenAI reported that Bogus Bylines used seven purported journalist personas to pitch long-form articles, and that it identified almost 100 articles under the operation’s bylines across more than a dozen online publications. The company also said the operators’ internal impact metric counted views on original posts to which replies were attached, rather than views on the replies themselves—a choice that could exaggerate apparent reach. Treat operator-reported metrics, company observations, and independently corroborated evidence as distinct kinds of evidence.

What the public record can—and cannot—show

OpenAI said in its October 8, 2026 report that its matrix covered 30 covert influence operations exposed over the preceding two and a half years. That is OpenAI’s own reporting count, not a census of all operations. Its case reports can establish what the company says it detected and did; Meta’s repository shows indicators and cautions Meta has chosen to publish; Brookings supplies a separate way to assess observable spread.

Those public materials do not disclose every provider’s internal detection thresholds, false-positive rates, or the full extent of information sharing. They also cannot, without evidence of audience response or real-world consequences, establish that a disrupted operation changed public opinion. OpenAI’s May 2024 account captures why outside evidence matters: “Our investigations and disruptions were made possible in part because there’s been so much detailed threat reporting over the years by distribution platforms and the open-source community.”
