There is no public formula that turns a wafer into a universal AI-chip price. A finished accelerator can include leading-edge logic wafers, yield losses, high-bandwidth memory (HBM), advanced packaging, assembly and test, boards, system hardware, logistics, tariffs and shipping. The price a customer pays is then set commercially, based on product scope, performance, availability, support and bargaining power—not simply by adding a standard markup to manufacturing cost.
Public filings and industry models reveal the layers that influence price, but they do not disclose a universal bill of materials or markup for each accelerator. To interpret a quote correctly, first identify what is being sold—a die, module, board, server or rack—then separate wafer economics from memory, packaging, capacity and commercial terms.
The short answer: price is a stack, not a single component
An AI accelerator’s economics begin with silicon fabrication, but the logic wafer is only one input. The number of usable dies obtained from a wafer matters, as do HBM stacks, the package that connects memory and compute, assembly and testing, board-level components, system integration and delivery. NVIDIA lists wafer fabrication; assembly, testing and packaging; boards and devices; manufacturing support; memory and other components; final-test yield fallout; tariffs; and shipping among cost-of-revenue categories. That list describes cost categories, not a public price formula.
The commercial price can diverge substantially from cost. A supplier may price for performance, software and support, scarce capacity, contractual commitments, launch timing or a complete data-center system. Conversely, a customer with volume, a long-term agreement or delayed deployment may negotiate different terms. A supply shortage can improve a seller’s bargaining position, but shortage alone does not prove a particular retail-price increase.

What a customer is actually buying
“AI chip price” can refer to several different products. A bare die is not comparable with a packaged accelerator module, and neither is comparable with a board, server or rack containing networking, power delivery, cooling and storage. Before comparing numbers, normalize the scope.
| Product scope | What is included | Why comparisons can mislead |
|---|---|---|
| Die | Unpackaged logic silicon cut from a wafer | Excludes HBM, package, board, testing and system hardware |
| Module | Packaged compute die with attached memory and interconnects | May still exclude carrier board, power components and system integration |
| Board | One or more modules plus board-level power, memory and devices | Board design and component content vary by product |
| Server or rack | Accelerators combined with CPUs, networking, storage, power and cooling | A system quote cannot be treated as a per-chip manufacturing cost |
Geography and date matter as well. A quote may reflect a particular region, currency, export-control environment, delivery window or negotiated volume. A number without those qualifiers is not a reliable basis for comparing generations.
How wafer economics affect the cost of an AI accelerator
Process technology and wafer value
A foundry’s wafer price reflects the economics of its process platform. GlobalFoundries says wafer value is determined principally by the uniqueness and complexity of the technology, performance characteristics, cost structure, yield and defect density. This is a framework for understanding wafer economics, not a public price list for the most advanced AI processes.
More advanced nodes can provide greater transistor density or efficiency, but they also require expensive equipment, design rules and process steps. A large AI die consumes more wafer area than a small chip, so fewer candidate dies fit on each wafer. The wafer invoice itself is only the starting point for effective cost per sellable device.
Yield, defects and good dies
Manufacturing defects and electrical test failures mean that a wafer does not produce a fixed number of usable accelerators. If a design is large or a process is still maturing, a greater fraction of candidate dies may fail. The cost of the wafer is then spread across fewer good dies, increasing effective cost per device, all else equal.

GlobalFoundries identifies yield and defect density as factors in wafer value, while NVIDIA separately reports final-test yield fallout in cost of revenue. Neither source supplies a universal yield percentage for AI accelerators. Applying a generic yield penalty to a specific model would therefore be misleading; the penalty depends on the design, process, test limits and production period.
HBM is a separate, substantial input
Leading accelerators commonly pair compute silicon with HBM, which provides very high memory bandwidth close to the processor. HBM is supplied as a separate component stream, with its own fabrication, stacking, testing and allocation constraints. Its cost does not disappear into the logic-wafer price.
Epoch AI’s component-cost analysis models HBM separately from logic dies, advanced packaging and auxiliary components. The analysis includes uncertainty intervals because supplier prices and cost shares are not fully public. Its estimates can show how assumptions change a modeled cost structure, but they are not supplier invoices and should not be presented as an exact HBM percentage for every accelerator.
HBM generation, capacity per stack and the number of stacks attached to a package all influence the material content. A product with more memory may command a higher price because it delivers a different capability, even when its compute die is similar. Memory availability can also limit shipments independently of logic-wafer output.
Advanced packaging can become the bottleneck
Attaching multiple dies and HBM stacks requires advanced packaging processes and specialized capacity. Technologies such as CoWoS are tracked separately from logic wafers and HBM in Epoch AI’s supply estimates. Packaging capacity can therefore constrain completed accelerators even when enough compute wafers have been fabricated.

Packaging cost includes more than a substrate. It covers integration steps, materials, equipment time, inspection and test, plus the risk that a packaged assembly fails. Multi-die designs increase the number of interfaces and manufacturing operations. The result is a cost and capacity layer that cannot be inferred by looking only at wafer starts.
Epoch AI estimates consumption of advanced logic wafers, CoWoS packaging and HBM by quarter from the first quarter of 2024 through the fourth quarter of 2025. Its method adjusts for manufacturing lags, inventory and export-control write-downs, then applies bills of materials and yield assumptions. These are modeled supply estimates, not guaranteed lead times, contract prices or a universal packaging charge.
Assembly, testing, boards and logistics complete the physical cost stack
After wafer fabrication and package assembly, an accelerator still needs electrical and functional testing. Failed units at final test create additional fallout. A sellable product may then require a carrier board, voltage regulation, connectors, cooling hardware, firmware storage and other devices.
NVIDIA’s disclosed cost categories include assembly, testing and packaging, board and device costs, manufacturing support, memory and components, tariffs and shipping. This illustrates why a module, board and complete server have different cost structures. Freight, insurance, import duties and regional distribution can matter even when the underlying silicon is identical.
| Cost layer | What drives it | What public evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Logic wafer | Process complexity, performance, wafer area, cost structure, yield and defect density | GlobalFoundries identifies these as principal wafer-value factors |
| Good-die conversion | Defects, electrical screening and final-test fallout | GlobalFoundries discusses yield and defect density; NVIDIA reports final-test yield fallout |
| HBM | Memory generation, capacity, stack count and supplier availability | Epoch AI models HBM separately and assigns uncertainty to component prices |
| Advanced package | Multi-die integration, substrate, assembly steps and packaging capacity | Epoch AI tracks CoWoS separately from wafers and HBM |
| Board and system | Power delivery, devices, networking, cooling and integration | NVIDIA lists boards, devices, manufacturing support and related costs |
| Delivery | Testing, logistics, tariffs, shipping and regional terms | NVIDIA lists tariffs and shipping among cost-of-revenue categories |
How supply constraints affect availability and bargaining
A constrained input can reduce the number of completed products or raise the cost of securing capacity. The constraint may be at the foundry, HBM supplier, advanced-packaging facility, substrate maker, board assembler or logistics provider. Because the stages are interdependent, surplus wafers do not guarantee surplus finished accelerators.

NVIDIA reported $279 billion in supply and capacity commitments as of July 26, 2026. That is a dated company disclosure about commitments, not a per-chip price or a guarantee that every customer receives product on a particular date. The same filing describes customer-side limits, including data-center infrastructure availability, capital and deployment pace, which can delay purchases even when suppliers are willing to ship.
Supply commitments can change bargaining conditions. A supplier may prioritize customers with reservations or long-term agreements, while a smaller buyer may face longer waits or less favorable allocation. However, the existence of a constraint does not establish how much a specific customer’s price increased. Contract terms, product mix, timing and competitive alternatives still determine the transaction.

NVIDIA cost categories
NVIDIA’s filing is useful for identifying the breadth of cost of revenue: wafers, assembly, test, packaging, boards, devices, memory, manufacturing support, final-test fallout, tariffs and shipping. It does not disclose a universal markup or a model-by-model bill of materials. A reported aggregate cost category cannot be divided cleanly to derive the manufacturing cost of one accelerator without internal volume and allocation data.
AMD manufacturing and demand disclosures
AMD’s fiscal 2025 annual report says wafers are sorted by the foundry or sent to assembly, test, mark and packaging partners in Asia-Pacific. It also reports strong demand for MI350-series accelerators, 2025 revenue of $34.6 billion and data-center revenue of $16.6 billion. Those are company-wide revenue figures and demand disclosures, not prices or manufacturing costs for an individual chip.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

GlobalFoundries reported that wafer fabrication and finished-wafer sales represented approximately 89% of net revenue in 2025. That percentage describes GlobalFoundries’ revenue mix. It does not mean 89% of an AI accelerator’s cost comes from its wafer.

How modeled component estimates should be read
Industry datasets are valuable when direct supplier pricing is confidential, but the assumptions must travel with the number. Epoch AI’s estimates combine production calculations, manufacturing lags, inventory adjustments, export-control write-downs, bills of materials and yield assumptions. Its component-cost work models HBM, logic, CoWoS and auxiliary costs with uncertainty intervals.
- Use the estimates to compare scenarios or identify which inputs may dominate capacity.
- Label every figure as an estimate and name Epoch AI as the source.
- Keep the modeled period and assumptions attached to the number.
- Do not convert an estimated cost share into a supplier invoice or a universal percentage.
- Do not infer a guaranteed waiting time from estimated quarterly consumption.
A practical framework for comparing AI accelerator prices
When evaluating two quotes or generations, work through the same sequence for each product.
- Define the product boundary. Record whether the quote covers a die, module, board, server or rack, and list included memory, networking, cooling and support.
- Record the date and geography. Note currency, region, delivery window, export restrictions, taxes, tariffs and whether the price is recurring, one-time or promotional.
- Compare process economics. Identify the process node or platform, die size when disclosed, wafer economics and the maturity of production. Do not assign a yield percentage without model-specific evidence.
- Normalize HBM. Compare memory generation, capacity and stack count, not just the accelerator name.
- Check packaging. Identify the packaging approach and whether the quote includes advanced-package assembly, substrates and testing.
- Separate capacity from price. Ask whether allocation, reservation, volume commitment or lead time is part of the commercial term. A capacity commitment is not itself a price.
- Compare the delivered capability. Performance, software, support, power and system integration may explain a price difference that wafer cost alone cannot.
Common analytical mistakes
- Calling a system price a chip price: servers and racks include many non-accelerator components.
- Treating revenue as cost: AMD’s reported revenue and GlobalFoundries’ revenue mix do not reveal per-chip manufacturing expense.
- Assuming every shortage raises price by a fixed amount: allocation and contract terms mediate the effect.
- Using modeled shares as invoices: Epoch AI’s estimates depend on assumptions and uncertainty intervals.
- Ignoring yield: wafer area and nominal die count overstate output when defects and final-test fallout are present.
- Ignoring packaging: available logic wafers cannot become finished accelerators without package capacity and other components.
- Comparing different dates: HBM availability, packaging capacity, tariffs and exchange rates can change the economics between launches.
What buyers can ask suppliers
A procurement team cannot usually obtain a complete confidential bill of materials, but it can make the quote auditable by asking for scope and assumptions.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Is the price for a die, module, board, server or rack?
- Which HBM generation and capacity are included?
- Are advanced packaging, final test, board assembly, cooling and networking included?
- What delivery window, allocation commitment and volume assumption apply?
- Which tariffs, shipping terms, taxes and regional services are included?
- Is the quoted amount a one-time purchase price, a recurring service charge or a negotiated volume price?
These questions do not reveal a universal industry markup, but they prevent the most damaging scope errors and expose which portion of a quote is driven by hardware, capacity or commercial terms.
Bottom line
AI chip prices are set through a layered manufacturing and commercial process. Wafer technology, die yield, HBM, advanced packaging, testing, boards, systems and logistics all influence cost; supply commitments and customer deployment constraints influence availability and negotiating leverage. Public filings and modeled datasets can document those drivers, but they do not support a universal per-chip cost or markup. The only defensible comparison matches product scope, date, geography, memory, packaging, yield assumptions and delivery terms before drawing a price conclusion.
